India Thrash South Korea 8-2 for Biggest Win in Asian Games History at Asian Games 2026

India’s men’s hockey team produced another commanding performance at the Asian Games 2026, defeating South Korea 8-2 on Thursday to register its biggest victory over the Koreans in Asian Games history.

The defending champions maintained their perfect start in Pool A with a third consecutive win, strengthening their position in the race for a semifinal berth. India controlled large stretches of the contest at the Kakamigahara venue, building a four-goal advantage in the opening quarter before extending their lead throughout the match. Dilpreet Singh and Abhishek scored two goals each, while Harmanpreet Singh, Rajinder Singh, Sukhjeet Singh and Shilanand Lakra added one apiece.

Dilpreet's brace took his tournament tally to nine goals, making him the leading scorer in the men's competition at this stage.

India established control from the opening minutes, putting the South Korean defence under pressure with quick attacks and circle entries. The breakthrough came in the fourth minute.

An aerial ball into the Korean circle was expertly controlled and worked towards Shilanand Lakra, who finished the move to give India a 1-0 lead. South Korean goalkeeper Jaehan Kim was soon forced into action, making saves in the eighth and ninth minutes as India continued to create opportunities. The pressure eventually produced a second goal in the 10th minute.

Sukhjeet Singh finished sharply following another Indian circle entry to double the advantage. Just a minute later, captain Harmanpreet Singh made it 3-0, converting a penalty corner with a powerful flick that flew past the goalkeeper.

India were firmly in control. In the 15th minute, Manpreet's aerial found Lakra, who picked out Abhishek in front of goal. The forward completed the move with a firm slap-push, sending India into the first break with a 4-0 lead.

India continued to dictate the contest in the second quarter. South Korea attempted to interrupt India's attacking rhythm, but the defending champions continued to find openings.

The fifth goal arrived in the 26th minute. Abhishek fed Mandeep inside the circle, and his reverse push was met by Dilpreet Singh, who got the decisive touch to make it 5-0.

South Korea had struggled to generate sustained attacking momentum, while India's movement and passing continued to create problems. The teams entered half-time with India holding a commanding 5-0 advantage.

India Moves to 7-0

The third quarter began in the same fashion. India needed just two minutes to add another goal. In the 32nd minute, Hardik's pass found Dilpreet, who unleashed a reverse hit that crashed into the backboard. It was Dilpreet's second goal of the match and took his tournament tally to nine. India continued to threaten from penalty corners, while their defensive unit remained alert when South Korea finally earned their first penalty corner.

Amit Rohidas produced an important defensive intervention to prevent Korea from converting the opportunity. India then extended their lead to 7-0 in the 38th minute. Raj Kumar's effort struck the crossbar, but Abhishek was perfectly positioned to complete the move and score his second goal of the match.

South Korea finally found a breakthrough in the 42nd minute. JaeHo Kim pulled one goal back to make it 7-1, giving the Koreans some momentum heading into the final quarter.

The four-time Asian Games champions continued to look for opportunities after the restart, and India goalkeeper Mohith was called upon to make important interventions. Korea reduced the deficit further in the 52nd minute.

Yong Bok Kim capitalised on a loose defensive challenge from Jarmanpreet Singh to score a field goal and make it 7-2. India, however, remained on the front foot and continued searching for another goal.

India's persistence eventually paid off in the closing stages. After earning a series of penalty corners, the defending champions finally found their eighth goal with just 38 seconds remaining.

Rajinder Singh stepped up and unleashed a fierce flick that flew into the backboard. The goal completed an 8-2 victory and confirmed India's biggest Asian Games win over South Korea.

The result also maintained India's unbeaten start to the tournament.

The match was also a special occasion for Indian playmaker Vivek Sagar Prasad, who completed 200 senior international appearances for the country. He was felicitated ahead of the match in recognition of the milestone. The landmark appearance came on a memorable night for Indian hockey, with the team producing its most emphatic Asian Games victory over South Korea.

India's three wins in Pool A have put the defending champions in a strong position as they continue their title defence. The team will next face hosts Japan on September 26.

After victories over Indonesia, Sri Lanka and now South Korea, India will enter that contest with considerable momentum. For now, however, the headline belongs to an eight-goal performance that combined attacking efficiency, penalty-corner execution and defensive control.
