India U18 Ice Hockey Team Registers First Win at IIHF U18 Asia Cup With Dominant Display Against Macau

India’s U18 ice hockey team finally got its reward after two difficult opening matches at the IIHF U18 Asia Cup in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, producing a commanding 8-1 victory over Macau to register its first win of the tournament.
After suffering defeats against Indonesia and Uzbekistan earlier in the competition, the young Indian side responded in emphatic fashion, showcasing attacking flair, improved structure, and far greater composure on the rink. The standout performer was Gurtej Singh Bhatti, who scored four goals in a sensational display and further strengthened his position as one of the tournament’s leading scorers. India’s other goals came through Devansh, Ajay Dangi, Tashi, and Iftiqar Hussain, as the team delivered its most complete performance of the tournament so far.
The victory carried significant importance for the Indian side after a challenging beginning to the campaign. India had opened the tournament with a spirited but ultimately unsuccessful 6-9 defeat against Indonesia. Despite the loss, the performance had earned praise due to the attacking intent shown by the young Indian players. Devansh scored a hat-trick in that match, while Sanidhya added two goals and Tashi also found the net.
The result itself also reflected progress. At the 2024 edition, India had initially lost 2-14 to Indonesia before later being awarded the match due to Indonesia fielding ineligible players. This year’s much closer 6-9 contest demonstrated the improving competitiveness of the Indian program at the U18 level.
However, the second match against Uzbekistan proved far more difficult. Facing a physically dominant and technically superior Uzbek side, India suffered a heavy 1-15 defeat. Uzbekistan, competing in the tournament after replacing Iran, overwhelmed India with relentless pressure and pace, leaving the Indian team with a difficult challenge mentally heading into the Macau encounter.
Against Macau, though, India looked like a transformed side. From the opening minutes, the Indian players attacked with confidence and played with far greater discipline in both offensive and defensive transitions. The movement off the puck was sharper, the passing sequences cleaner, and the finishing significantly more clinical. Gurtej Singh Bhatti emerged as the central figure in the victory.
The Chandigarh youngster scored four goals in a superb all-round performance, repeatedly exploiting spaces in the Macau defence with intelligent positioning and quick finishing. His ability to find scoring areas and convert chances efficiently gave India complete control of the contest. The performance also continued Gurtej’s excellent form from recent months.
Widely regarded as one of India’s top emerging ice hockey prospects, Gurtej had already impressed earlier this year at the Khelo India Winter Games. His performances in Bishkek have now elevated him into the spotlight at the continental level as well. With six goals in the tournament so far, he currently stands among the leading scorers at the IIHF U18 Asia Cup.
While Gurtej dominated headlines, India’s victory was built on a strong collective effort. Devansh once again made his presence felt on the scoresheet after his impressive display against Indonesia, continuing his productive tournament in attack. Ajay Dangi, Tashi, and Iftiqar Hussain also contributed goals as India consistently stretched the Macau defence throughout the game. More importantly, India looked significantly more organised defensively compared to the previous matches.
The team managed transitions better, limited high-quality scoring chances, and maintained far greater structure in their defensive zone coverage. That improvement allowed India to dictate the rhythm of the game instead of constantly reacting under pressure. The 8-1 scoreline reflected the gap between the two sides on the day, but it also highlighted how quickly this young Indian squad has adapted during the tournament.
Positive signs for Indian ice hockey
Although India’s semifinal hopes remain slim after the heavy loss to Uzbekistan, the victory against Macau still represents a valuable step forward for Indian ice hockey development. Ice hockey remains a niche sport in India, largely concentrated in regions like Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, and parts of North India where winter conditions support the sport. Limited infrastructure, lack of regular competition, and restricted access to international-level facilities continue to challenge the growth of the game nationally.
Yet tournaments like the IIHF U18 Asia Cup provide crucial exposure for young Indian players. Competing regularly against international opposition allows players to improve tactically, physically, and mentally areas where experience often matters significantly in ice hockey. The performance against Macau demonstrated that India’s young players are capable of competing effectively when they execute their structure well and maintain composure.
One of the most encouraging aspects of India’s campaign has been the emergence of several promising young players. Gurtej Singh Bhatti’s scoring exploits, Devansh’s attacking consistency, and the overall resilience shown by the squad despite difficult setbacks indicate growing depth within the Indian junior system. Equally important has been the team’s response after adversity.
Following the emotionally draining defeat to Uzbekistan, the players could easily have struggled mentally. Instead, they delivered their strongest performance of the competition, reflecting maturity and character within the squad. As Indian ice hockey continues its gradual rise, performances like this provide encouragement for the future.
The road toward becoming a competitive Asian ice hockey nation remains long, but India’s young U18 squad has shown in Bishkek that the foundation is steadily improving and that the next generation is ready to compete with greater belief on the international stage.
