Indian Athletics Series: Young Indian Throwers Make Their Mark with World U20 Qualification Performances

The Indian Athletics Series–9 in Ludhiana turned into a showcase of the country’s rising talent as several junior athletes produced outstanding performances to meet the qualification standards for the World U20 Championships.
Among the biggest stars of the competition were Dharanidharan T, Ashish Yadav, Poonam, and Nischay, all of whom delivered performances that underline the bright future of Indian athletics. The quartet excelled in the throwing events, with two promising javelin throwers and a discus specialist achieving the required marks for the global junior competition. Their performances also highlighted the growing depth of India’s youth programme, particularly in field events.
Tamil Nadu’s Dharanidharan T emerged as one of the standout performers in the men’s U20 javelin throw by recording a massive personal best of 73.42 metres. The throw not only represented the finest performance of his young career but also took him beyond the qualification standard for the World U20 Championships. It was a breakthrough moment for the talented thrower, who has steadily progressed through the domestic ranks and now has an opportunity to compete against the world’s best junior athletes.
Crossing the qualification mark with a lifetime best also demonstrates his ability to perform under pressure on one of the biggest domestic stages.
Joining Dharanidharan among the World U20 qualifiers was Uttar Pradesh’s Ashish Yadav, who produced an impressive throw of 72.27 metres. Ashish comfortably surpassed the required qualification standard, ensuring that India now has multiple promising young javelin throwers capable of competing internationally.
The performance reflects the increasing strength of India’s junior javelin programme, which has grown significantly in recent years following the global success of Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra and the emergence of several talented domestic athletes.
Interestingly, the U20 men’s javelin competition itself was won by Haryana’s Aditya, who claimed the title with another strong display. However, despite topping the podium, Aditya will not be eligible for the World U20 Championships due to age regulations. Being born in 2006, he falls outside the eligibility criteria for the upcoming edition of the event.
As a result, the qualification achievements of Dharanidharan and Ashish take on even greater significance, as they remain eligible to represent India on the global stage.
The women’s U20 javelin competition also produced a standout performance as Poonam from Haryana delivered a lifetime best throw of 52.16 metres to secure first place. More importantly, the mark surpassed the qualification standard for the World U20 Championships, giving the young thrower a chance to compete at one of the biggest events in junior athletics.
Poonam trains under renowned coach Hanuman Singh at the Bangaon academy, a centre that has gained recognition for consistently producing talented young athletes across throwing disciplines.
Her victory continued the academy’s impressive record of developing future stars.
The Bangaon training centre enjoyed further success through Bhavya Pilania, who finished second in the women’s javelin event with a best throw of 45.49 metres. Although she did not achieve the World U20 qualification mark, her podium finish further highlighted the strength of the coaching programme and the pipeline of emerging talent being developed at the academy.
The simultaneous success of Poonam and Bhavya demonstrates the benefits of structured grassroots coaching and specialised training environments.
Another major highlight came in the men’s U20 discus throw, where Nischay comfortably surpassed the World U20 qualification standard with a best effort of 59.12 metres. The qualifying benchmark stood at 56.00 metres, meaning Nischay exceeded it by more than three metres while continuing what has already been an exceptional season.
His recent achievements include Silver medal at the Asian U20 Championships, Gold medal at the Junior Federation Cup, Victories in both discus throw and shot put at the Indian Open Throws competition & Breaking the Indian U20 national record in discus throw
The latest performance further establishes him as one of India’s brightest prospects in the throwing events.
The performances in Ludhiana underline the remarkable progress being made in India’s youth athletics system. With Dharanidharan, Ashish, Poonam and Nischay all meeting World U20 qualification standards, the country appears well placed to field a competitive contingent at the upcoming championships.
Their success also reflects the increasing emphasis on scientific coaching, structured talent identification and regular domestic competition, all of which are helping athletes achieve international benchmarks at younger ages.
The World U20 Championships have historically served as a launching pad for many future Olympic and World Championship medallists. For India’s latest crop of qualifiers, the opportunity to compete on the global stage will provide invaluable experience and exposure. Dharanidharan T and Ashish Yadav have showcased the country’s growing depth in javelin, while Poonam’s breakthrough in women’s javelin and Nischay’s continued dominance in discus add further optimism for the future.
As Indian athletics continues to produce talented youngsters across disciplines, performances like these suggest that the next generation is ready to carry the nation’s momentum forward on the international stage.
