Gulveer Singh created history by winning silver in the men's 10,000m at the Commonwealth Games 2026, India's first-ever medal in the event.

Indian distance runner Gulveer Singh etched his name into the history books with a sensational silver medal in the men's 10,000m at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow.

Battling relentless rain, a world-class field and the traditional dominance of East African athletes, Gulveer produced the race of his career to become the first Indian man ever to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the 10,000m.

The 26-year-old crossed the finish line in 27:49.78, just behind Australia's Ky Robinson, who claimed gold in 27:48.93. David Mullarkey of the Isle of Man secured bronze with 27:50.28, only half a second behind the Indian in a dramatic three-way finish.

The result also marked a significant shift in Commonwealth distance running history, as for the first time since 1986, neither Kenya nor Uganda featured on the men's 10,000m podium.

The race unfolded under extremely challenging conditions at Scotstoun Stadium, with heavy rain making the track slippery and demanding throughout the 25-lap contest. Despite the weather, Gulveer showed no hesitation in positioning himself among the leaders from the opening stages. After the first 1,000 metres, he settled into third place, signalling his intent to stay with the lead group rather than adopting a conservative strategy.

By the 2,000-metre mark, he continued to occupy the bronze-medal position, comfortably matching the pace set by the front-runners. It was a bold tactical decision, considering the strength of the field, but one that ultimately laid the foundation for a historic performance.

Distance races at major championships are often won through patience rather than outright speed, and Gulveer demonstrated remarkable composure during the middle stages. He remained among the leading athletes through 3,000 metres, crossing the mark in approximately 8:39, before continuing to shadow the front pack.

After 4,000 metres, the Indian was still firmly in medal contention, although the chasing group had begun to close the gap. As the pace increased, Gulveer briefly slipped to fifth place with around 4,000 metres remaining.

Rather than panicking, he maintained his rhythm and resisted the temptation to respond immediately to every surge from his rivals. His disciplined approach ensured he still had energy left for the decisive closing laps.

With approximately 2,000 metres to go, Gulveer found himself in sixth position, seemingly drifting away from the podium. However, appearances proved deceptive. As several competitors began to tire under the demanding conditions, the Indian gradually increased his pace. With just 1,000 metres remaining, Gulveer launched his decisive move, climbing from sixth to fourth while remaining within touching distance of the medal positions.

The acceleration transformed the complexion of the race. By the time the bell rang to signal the final lap, Gulveer had surged into third place, setting up an extraordinary finish.

The final 400 metres produced one of the finest moments in Indian athletics history. Staying composed despite the pressure from athletes behind him, Gulveer unleashed one final burst of speed as the leaders entered the home straight. His powerful finishing kick carried him past the bronze-medal position and into second place, where he held off a late challenge from David Mullarkey to secure silver by just 0.50 seconds.

Only Ky Robinson finished ahead of him, with the Australian crossing the line less than a second before the Indian. The narrow margins highlighted just how fiercely contested the race had been. For Gulveer, the silver medal represented the culmination of years of steady progress in Indian distance running.

The significance of Gulveer's achievement extends far beyond the medal itself. India had never previously produced a medal winner in the men's 10,000 metres at the Commonwealth Games.

For decades, the event has largely been dominated by athletes from Kenya and Uganda, nations with rich traditions in long-distance running. Gulveer not only broke India's medal drought but also helped reshape the event's history. The absence of both Kenya and Uganda from the podium made the result even more remarkable, with Australia, India and the Isle of Man claiming the medals instead.

It was a race that defied expectations in every sense.

Gulveer has steadily emerged as India's leading long-distance runner over recent seasons through a series of impressive performances on both the track and road. His ability to maintain a consistent pace while delivering a powerful finish has become one of his defining characteristics, and those qualities were on full display in Glasgow. Rather than allowing himself to be dropped when the pace intensified midway through the race, he trusted his preparation and executed his race plan with remarkable discipline.

That patience proved decisive when several rivals faded during the closing stages. His performance also showcased the growing standard of Indian endurance running, an area where the country has historically struggled to challenge the world's best.

Gulveer Singh's silver medal will undoubtedly rank among the most significant achievements in the history of Indian athletics. Success in the men's 10,000 metres has traditionally been considered one of the toughest challenges at international championships, given the dominance of specialist distance-running nations. By standing on the Commonwealth podium, Gulveer has demonstrated that Indian athletes can now compete with the very best over long distances.

His performance is likely to inspire an entire generation of young runners while providing further momentum to India's rapidly improving athletics programme.

As the celebrations continue in Glasgow, Gulveer Singh's name will forever be remembered as the man who broke new ground for Indian distance running. His courageous, tactically brilliant and determined performance not only earned a silver medal but also created a historic first that could redefine India's ambitions in endurance athletics for years to come.
