Ahmedabad Set to Host Historic Commonwealth Games 2030 as India Prepares for Centenary Edition

India is set to host the Commonwealth Games for the second time after Ahmedabad, Gujarat, was officially confirmed as the host city for the 2030 edition. 

Branded as Amdavad 2030, the Games will carry added historical significance as they mark 100 years since the inaugural Commonwealth Games were held in Hamilton, Canada, in 1930.

The announcement represents a landmark moment for Indian sport and reinforces the country's growing stature as a destination capable of hosting major international sporting events. After New Delhi successfully staged the Commonwealth Games in 2010, Ahmedabad will now have the opportunity to deliver the centenary edition of one of the world's premier multi-sport events.

Although the exact dates of the Games have yet to be announced, preparations are already underway to ensure India delivers what organisers hope will be a memorable and sustainable edition.

Ahmedabad's bid received unanimous backing from Commonwealth Sport members during the General Assembly held in Glasgow on November 26, 2025. Representatives from all 74 Commonwealth member nations and territories voted in favour of India's proposal, officially confirming Ahmedabad as the host city for the 2030 Games. India had earlier emerged as the preferred candidate ahead of Nigeria before receiving formal ratification.

The overwhelming support reflected confidence in India's organisational capabilities, infrastructure and long-term vision for hosting international sporting events.

The official transition of hosting responsibilities will take place during the closing ceremony of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games on August 2. During the ceremony, India will receive the Commonwealth Games Flag and the Host Baton, symbolising the formal handover from Glasgow to Ahmedabad.

The occasion will mark the beginning of the four-year countdown towards the centenary Games.

The 2030 edition holds unique significance within Commonwealth sporting history. Exactly one hundred years will have passed since the inaugural British Empire Games—later renamed the Commonwealth Games—were staged in Hamilton, Canada, in 1930.

Hosting this landmark edition places additional responsibility on Ahmedabad to celebrate the Games' rich history while presenting a modern vision for its future.

For India, the opportunity extends beyond organising a successful sporting event. It provides a platform to showcase the country's sporting infrastructure, organisational capabilities and cultural heritage to audiences across the Commonwealth.

Commonwealth Sport has confirmed that between 15 and 17 sports will feature at Amdavad 2030. Eight sports have already been included in the initial programme:

• Athletics

• Swimming

• Table Tennis

• Bowls

• Weightlifting

• Artistic Gymnastics

• Netball

• Boxing

Each of these disciplines will also include their respective para-sport events, reinforcing the Games' continued commitment to inclusivity and integrated competition.

Several additional sports remain under consideration for the remaining places in the programme. These include cricket, hockey, badminton, shooting, wrestling, squash and judo sports in which India has traditionally enjoyed considerable success at the Commonwealth Games.

The final programme is expected to be confirmed closer to the event after consultations between Commonwealth Sport and the host organisers.

Ahmedabad already possesses many of the facilities required to stage an event of this magnitude. Earlier this year, a Commonwealth Sport delegation conducted an inspection visit to the city, assessing key venues and infrastructure. Among the facilities visited were the Narendra Modi Stadium, the Mahatma Mandir Convention Centre, and the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex, all expected to play important roles during the Games.

The inspection formed part of the early planning process, allowing organisers to evaluate venue readiness and identify any upgrades required before 2030. Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has expressed confidence in Ahmedabad's ability to stage a successful Commonwealth Games. According to the Minister, the city is well positioned to deliver a Games that is not only memorable but also sustainable, reflecting modern standards of event management while leaving a lasting sporting legacy.

The focus on sustainability aligns with the broader direction adopted by major international sporting events, where organisers increasingly prioritise the use of existing infrastructure, environmental responsibility and long-term community benefits. For India, hosting the Games also provides an opportunity to strengthen grassroots participation, inspire young athletes and accelerate investment in sporting facilities across the country.

Usha, Abhinav Bindra, Saina Nehwal, and Mirabai Chanu to India's emergence as one of the leading nations in disciplines like wrestling, badminton, shooting, weightlifting and boxing, the Games have consistently provided memorable moments for Indian sport.
