The Kolkata Derby once again delivered drama, intensity and late twists as East Bengal FC and Mohun Bagan Super Giant played out a thrilling 1-1 draw in a crucial Indian Super League 2025-26 clash at the Salt Lake Stadium on Sunday.

With the ISL title race hanging delicately in the balance, both sides entered the contest knowing the importance of three points. In the end, the spoils were shared after a frantic finale saw substitute Edmund Lalrindika give East Bengal the lead in the 85th minute before Jason Cummings rescued a point for Mohun Bagan five minutes later. The draw keeps the title race alive heading into the final round of matches, though East Bengal remain in pole position due to their superior goal difference.

Both Kolkata giants now sit on 23 points from 12 matches, but East Bengal’s goal difference of +18 keeps them ahead of Mohun Bagan’s +13. Mumbai City FC and Punjab FC remain close behind on 22 points, adding further tension to what has become one of the tightest ISL title races in recent years. For East Bengal, the equation is now relatively straightforward. Victory against Inter Kashi in their final league game would almost certainly secure the championship unless Mohun Bagan overturn the significant goal difference gap.

Sunday’s derby, however, was about far more than mathematics.

The latest chapter of Indian football’s greatest rivalry carried enormous emotional and historical weight. This was the 349th meeting between the two clubs across competitions, with East Bengal continuing to hold the overall advantage in the historic head-to-head battle. As expected, the atmosphere inside Salt Lake Stadium was electric long before kickoff.

Both teams started aggressively, refusing to sit back despite the enormous pressure attached to the occasion. Mohun Bagan created the first major opportunity inside four minutes when Liston Colaco burst past defenders before finding Subhasish Bose on the overlap. Bose cut the ball back intelligently for Sahal Abdul Samad, but the midfielder’s heavy first touch allowed East Bengal to recover.

The response from East Bengal arrived almost immediately.

A long kick from goalkeeper Prabhsukhan Singh Gill released PV Vishnu through on goal after Mohun Bagan’s defensive line was caught out of position. With Vishal Kaith already beaten, Abhishek Tekcham produced a vital last-ditch challenge to prevent an early opener. The game quickly developed into a fast, end-to-end contest filled with transitions and attacking intent.

Mohun Bagan threatened through Manvir Singh after a defensive lapse from Anwar Ali, while East Bengal came agonisingly close in the 14th minute through Anton Sojberg. The Danish forward collected a loose ball outside the box, shifted past defenders and curled a beautiful effort towards the far corner, only for a slight deflection off Tom Aldred to send the ball crashing against the post.

That moment lifted East Bengal further. Jeakson Singh soon produced a brilliant through pass to release Bipin Singh inside the area, but the winger hesitated at the crucial moment and failed to capitalise on the opportunity.

At the other end, Mohun Bagan continued looking dangerous through midfield combinations involving Anirudh Thapa and Liston Colaco. Thapa nearly broke the deadlock with a powerful long-range effort that forced Gill into a sharp save. Despite the intensity and attacking quality on display, both sides entered halftime level at 0-0.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with neither team willing to compromise despite the risk attached to pushing forward. East Bengal perhaps looked slightly more threatening in open play. Bipin Singh wasted another good chance shortly after the restart following neat interplay with Sojberg, while Miguel Figueira increasingly began controlling attacking transitions through midfield.

As the match entered its final phase, the tension inside the stadium became almost unbearable. The breakthrough finally arrived in the 85th minute.

Miguel threaded a perfectly weighted through ball behind the Mohun Bagan defence, allowing substitute Edmund Lalrindika to break clear on goal. The forward kept his composure brilliantly before calmly slotting past Kaith to spark wild celebrations among the East Bengal supporters. For a brief moment, it looked as though East Bengal had secured a potentially title-defining derby victory.

But Mohun Bagan responded like champions.

Just five minutes later, Dimitrios Petratos delivered a dangerous corner towards the near post where substitute Jason Cummings reacted quickest. The Australian forward cleverly flicked the ball across goal and into the net, sending the Mohun Bagan fans into eruption. The final minutes descended into complete chaos.

Lalrindika, moments after becoming East Bengal’s hero, was sent off during stoppage time after receiving a second yellow card. Mohun Bagan then nearly stole victory deep into added time when Jamie Maclaren connected with a cross inside the box, only for Gill to produce another outstanding save. That intervention ultimately ensured East Bengal left the derby still occupying top spot in the standings.

While neither side managed to land a decisive blow in the title race, the match once again reminded Indian football fans why the Kolkata Derby remains unmatched in emotion, intensity and drama.

And with the championship still undecided, the tension surrounding this unforgettable ISL season continues to grow.
