Jaismine Lamboria, Arundhati Choudhary to Lead 14-Member Indian Boxing Squad at Tammer Tournament

Commonwealth Games gold medallists Jaismine Lamboria and Arundhati Choudhary will headline a 14-member Indian boxing contingent at the 46th International Tammer Tournament in Tampere, Finland.
The competition, scheduled from October 30 to November 1, will provide Indian boxers with an opportunity to test themselves against international opposition and gain valuable experience across Olympic weight categories.
Jaismine will compete in the women’s 57kg category, while Arundhati will represent India at 70kg. Both boxers bring established credentials to the squad, which comprises seven men and seven women.
The participation is part of an initiative to broaden India’s pool of internationally experienced boxers, with particular emphasis on Olympic weight categories. According to the Boxing Federation of India (BFI), the tournament will offer exposure to boxers ranked third in the country’s Olympic weight-category bench strength, alongside leading pugilists in categories that were not included in the Asian Games programme.
The competition represents another opportunity for India to strengthen its depth as the country continues to develop boxers capable of competing at the highest international level.
Ajay Singh, president of the Boxing Federation of India, underlined the importance of international exposure in preparing Indian boxers for future challenges.
“The Tammer Tournament provides our boxers with an important opportunity to gain international exposure and test themselves against quality opposition. Our focus is on building depth across Olympic weight categories and ensuring that more Indian boxers get the experience needed to compete at the highest level. Such tournaments are an important part of that process,” Singh said.
The approach highlights the federation’s intention to expand the number of Indian boxers with experience against overseas opponents rather than relying exclusively on a smaller group of established names.
The inclusion of athletes from different positions in the domestic Olympic weight-category rankings is central to that strategy. Such exposure can help boxers understand the demands of international competition and provide opportunities to assess their performances against a wider range of opponents.
The presence of Jaismine and Arundhati will add experience to the women’s contingent, while the remaining selections will have an opportunity to make their mark at an established international tournament.
Seven men selected for Finland assignment
India’s men’s team features seven boxers across weight categories ranging from 55kg to above 90kg. The squad comprises Pawan Bartwal in the 55kg category, Hussam Uddin Mohammed at 60kg and Vivek Meena at 65kg. Hitesh will compete at 70kg, while Akshay represents India in the 80kg division.
Bobin Chauhan has been selected for the 90kg category, with Chetan Choudhary competing in the 90+kg division.
The spread of selections across the weight categories gives the men’s contingent representation from the lighter divisions through to heavyweight competition. Each boxer will have the opportunity to measure his performance against international opposition under the tournament’s competition format.
For the selected athletes, the assignment in Finland will be an important test of their preparation and ability to adapt to different opponents. The tournament’s preliminary rounds will be followed by the semifinals and finals, creating a short but demanding competitive schedule.
The women’s team also comprises seven boxers, with Jaismine and Arundhati among the leading names. Tanu will compete in the 51kg category, while Aarti Dhariyal has been selected for 54kg. Jaismine will represent India at 57kg, followed by Disha Vijay Patil in the 60kg division and Ankushita Boro at 65kg.
Arundhati will compete at 70kg, while Imroz Khan completes the women’s contingent in the 75kg category. The squad covers seven weight divisions and combines the experience of the Commonwealth Games gold medallists with opportunities for other Indian boxers to compete internationally.
Jaismine’s participation at 57kg and Arundhati’s appearance at 70kg will be among the key storylines for India, but the tournament also provides a platform for the rest of the women’s team to gain experience and demonstrate their competitiveness.
Organised by the Tampere Boxing Association, the International Tammer Tournament has been held annually since 1977 and remains an established event on the international boxing calendar. The competition features 10 elite men’s weight categories and seven elite women’s categories, with bouts conducted under World Boxing competition rules.
The tournament schedule lists the opening day for preliminary rounds, followed by semifinals on October 31 and finals on November 1. This format gives participating boxers a short window in which to progress through the draw and compete for honours.
For India, the focus extends beyond the immediate results. The tournament is part of a broader effort to ensure that more boxers gain the international experience required to progress in Olympic weight categories.
With 14 athletes representing the country, the Indian contingent will look to make the most of the opportunity in Finland. Jaismine and Arundhati will lead the challenge, while the remaining boxers will aim to use the competition as a stepping stone in their international careers.
