Leh Gets All-Year-Round Indoor Shooting Range as NRAI Backs New Chapter for Ladakh

Shooting sport in Ladakh has received a significant boost with the inauguration of a new all-year-round indoor Air Rifle and Air Pistol shooting range in Leh, opening a new pathway for athletes from the Union Territory to take up the sport and pursue competitive opportunities.

The facility, established by the Ladakh Shooting Association (LSA) in collaboration with the Ladakh Police, is located at the newly built Sports Complex of the Ladakh Police in Leh. It was inaugurated in August by the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Shri V.K. Saxena.

The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) has welcomed the development as an important step towards taking shooting sport deeper into the grassroots in a region where geography and extreme weather can make sporting access particularly challenging.

The biggest significance of the new range lies in its ability to provide year-round access to shooting infrastructure. Ladakh's challenging climatic conditions can make outdoor sporting activity difficult for extended periods. An insulated indoor facility therefore provides athletes with a consistent environment in which they can train without having to depend on favourable weather.

The range will not be restricted exclusively to established athletes. According to the NRAI, the facility will be accessible to students, members of the general public and police personnel, creating a wider base of participants from which future talent can be identified.

For aspiring shooters in Leh, that could remove one of the biggest barriers to entering the sport: access.

Instead of having to travel outside the Union Territory simply to access basic shooting infrastructure, young athletes will now have an opportunity to begin their journey locally.

NRAI President Shri Kalikesh Singh Deo described the inauguration as an important milestone for shooting in Ladakh, highlighting the importance of making facilities and opportunities available to young talent across India.

Ladakh presents a particularly distinctive challenge because of its geographical location and climatic conditions. An all-year-round indoor range can therefore play a meaningful role in establishing a consistent training environment.

The NRAI has also expressed gratitude to the Lieutenant Governor, the Union Territory administration, Ladakh Police and Ladakh Shooting Association for their commitment to developing shooting in the region.

The broader ambition is to create a pathway through which young shooters from Ladakh can progress from introductory participation to competitive shooting. That pathway will require not only facilities but also regular coaching, competitions, athlete identification and continued institutional support.

The new Leh range provides an important starting point.

Government support could expand the network

The inauguration ceremony brought together senior officials and sporting administrators, including Chief Secretary of Ladakh Shri Ashish Kundra, DGP Ladakh Shri Anant Jain, NRAI Vice President Shri K. Sultan Singh and Ladakh Shooting Association President Shri Gawa Norboo.

The Lieutenant Governor also announced the UT Government's support for developing additional shooting ranges at other districts and locations across Ladakh.

That announcement could prove crucial. A single facility in Leh can create opportunities for athletes in the capital, but a wider network would make shooting accessible to a significantly larger population across the Union Territory.

If additional ranges are established, Ladakh could gradually develop a structured shooting ecosystem rather than relying on one central facility. The NRAI Secretary General, Shri Pawankumar Singh, underlined the importance of access in building any sporting ecosystem.

Opening the range to students, members of the public and police personnel could introduce a much larger group of people to shooting while simultaneously creating opportunities for talent identification.

The real test of the facility will come over the coming years. A shooting range by itself does not produce international athletes. It needs to be supported by qualified coaches, regular competitions, equipment, sports science and a clearly defined progression system.

The Leh facility nevertheless addresses an important first requirement: access. Young athletes who discover an aptitude for Air Rifle or Air Pistol shooting will now have the opportunity to train closer to home. Regular exposure can help coaches identify promising shooters at an earlier stage and potentially connect them with the wider national shooting pathway.

For a sport in which India has established itself as a major international force, expanding the talent pool geographically is an important long-term objective.

The development also has a broader social dimension. By making the facility available to students and the general public, the initiative can introduce shooting to people who may otherwise never have considered taking it up.

The Leh indoor range is therefore more than another sporting facility. It represents an attempt to establish the foundations of a sustainable shooting ecosystem in a region with unique geographical and climatic circumstances.

The partnership between the Ladakh Shooting Association and Ladakh Police, backed by the UT Government and welcomed by the NRAI, provides the institutional framework for that effort.

The immediate opportunity is to get more young people through the doors, provide them with structured training and identify those capable of progressing to higher levels. The longer-term vision could be considerably bigger. With the UT Government signalling its intention to support additional ranges across Ladakh, the Leh facility could become the first building block of a regional network that connects local shooters to the national competitive pathway.

For Ladakh's aspiring athletes, the message is equally significant: they no longer necessarily need to look beyond the Union Territory to begin their shooting journey.

The next generation of shooters from Ladakh can now start aiming for the national stage from home.
