Indian table tennis continued its impressive rise on the international circuit as Manav Thakkar and Manush Shah captured the men’s doubles title at WTT Contender Lagos 2026 in dominant fashion.

The Indian pair defeated Romania’s Iulian Chirita and Andrei Istrate 11-7, 12-10, 11-4 in the final to secure their maiden WTT Contender men’s doubles title together. The triumph also completed a memorable week for Manush Shah, who earlier won the mixed doubles crown alongside Diya Chitale, making it a sensational double-title finish for the Indian paddler in Nigeria.

For Manav and Manush, however, this title carried special significance. Both players have long been regarded among the most consistent doubles performers in Indian table tennis, but a WTT Contender title together had remained elusive despite several deep runs on the international circuit. In Lagos, they finally delivered the breakthrough performance many had expected from the Indian duo for quite some time.

What made the achievement even more impressive was the manner in which they dominated the tournament.

The Indian pair went through the entire competition without dropping a single game. Match after match, they controlled rallies with aggressive attacking play, sharp service variations, and exceptional chemistry around the table. Their semifinal victory against Nigerian home favourites Taiwo Mati and Matthew Kuti highlighted the level they had reached during the tournament. Playing against a highly energetic local pair backed by strong crowd support, Manav and Manush produced a clinical display to win 11-4, 11-6, 11-9.

That performance carried momentum into the final. Facing the Romanian wildcard combination of Chirita and Istrate, the Indians started aggressively from the opening points. Manush’s powerful forehand play and Manav’s quick counter-attacking game repeatedly forced the Romanians onto the defensive.

The first game saw the Indians dictate the pace completely as they raced to an 11-7 win. The second game proved more competitive, with the Romanian pair attempting to slow the rhythm and disrupt India’s attacking flow. However, Manav and Manush handled the pressure calmly, edging the crucial game 12-10.

Once they secured the second game, there was no way back for the opposition. The third game became a showcase of India’s dominance as the pair stormed to an emphatic 11-4 victory to seal the title in straight games.

Their success in Lagos once again underlined the growing strength of Indian doubles table tennis on the international stage. For years, Indian table tennis relied primarily on singles specialists to deliver international results. However, over the last few seasons, dedicated doubles combinations have started producing consistent performances at WTT events. The emergence of partnerships like Manush Shah–Diya Chitale in mixed doubles and now Manav Thakkar–Manush Shah in men’s doubles signals an important evolution in Indian table tennis.

The chemistry between Manav and Manush has been particularly evident throughout this season.

Both players possess complementary styles that work effectively in doubles competition. Manav’s speed around the table and ability to absorb pressure during quick exchanges perfectly balance Manush’s aggressive topspin-oriented attacking game. Their movement and coordination during transition phases looked especially sharp throughout the Lagos campaign. The title also reflects the increasing maturity of India’s current generation of table tennis players.

Manav Thakkar has long been considered one of India’s brightest talents, especially after his impressive performances at the junior level. Over recent years, he has gradually developed into a more complete senior player capable of competing consistently at international events. Manush Shah, meanwhile, continues to establish himself as one of the most versatile players in the Indian circuit. Winning both the mixed doubles and men’s doubles titles in Lagos demonstrated not only his technical quality but also his physical and mental endurance across formats.

The overall Indian campaign in Lagos was highly encouraging.

Apart from the men’s doubles triumph, Manush Shah and Diya Chitale won the mixed doubles title, while several Indian paddlers made deep runs in singles and doubles categories. India’s consistent presence in the latter stages of WTT events now reflects the country’s growing depth in table tennis.

Importantly, performances like these also strengthen India’s prospects heading into major multi-sport events such as the Asian Games 2026 and future Olympic qualification cycles.

Doubles events have increasingly become an area where India can realistically challenge stronger Asian and European nations. Partnerships with long-term stability and tactical understanding are now beginning to produce consistent international results.

The Lagos triumph may therefore prove to be more than just another tournament win.

For Manav Thakkar and Manush Shah, it could mark the beginning of a partnership capable of competing regularly at the highest levels of world table tennis.

Winning a WTT Contender title without dropping a single game is never easy, regardless of the draw or conditions. Doing it with such authority against experienced international opponents makes the achievement even more noteworthy.

For Indian table tennis fans, the message from Lagos is becoming increasingly clear — India’s doubles combinations are no longer just capable of challenging internationally.

They are beginning to win consistently.
