Manpreet Singh The New Benchmark

The record now belongs to Manpreet Singh, whose extraordinary career has taken him beyond the 400-cap milestone. The midfielder surpassed the long-standing mark set by Dilip Tirkey during India's FIH Pro League campaign in Europe and has continued to extend his record.

Since making his debut in 2011, Manpreet has been the heartbeat of the Indian midfield. His relentless work rate, ability to control tempo and leadership qualities helped guide India through one of its most successful periods in recent history.

Among his greatest achievements was captaining India to the historic bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics, ending a 41-year wait for an Olympic hockey medal. He also played a crucial role in India's bronze-medal finish at the Paris Olympics.

Before Manpreet, the benchmark belonged to Dilip Tirkey, who represented India 412 times between 1995 and 2009. Widely regarded as one of the finest defenders India has ever produced, Tirkey was known for his composure, positioning and fearless defending. A three-time Olympian and former captain, Tirkey became the first Indian player to cross the 400-cap mark. Today, he continues to contribute to the sport as the President of Hockey India, helping shape the future of Indian hockey.

Few players have captured the imagination of Indian sports fans like Dhanraj Pillay. The attacking wizard earned 339 caps and scored approximately 170 international goals during a career spanning 15 years. Known for his breathtaking dribbling skills and explosive pace, Pillay represented India at four Olympic Games, four World Cups and four Asian Games. He remains one of the most influential figures in Indian hockey history.

With 336 international appearances, PR Sreejesh stands as the most successful goalkeeper in Indian hockey history. The Kerala-born custodian became synonymous with India's revival on the global stage. His heroics in crucial matches, particularly during India's Olympic medal-winning campaigns, earned him legendary status. Sreejesh retired after the Paris Olympics, leaving behind a legacy that includes multiple international medals and some of the most memorable saves in Indian hockey history.

The Midfield Masters

The list also features two of India's greatest midfielders Sardar Singh and Baljit Singh Dhillon. Sardar Singh accumulated 314 caps and was widely regarded as one of the best midfielders in the world during his peak years. His leadership helped India secure gold at the 2014 Asian Games and return to the Olympics as continental champions.

Baljit Singh Dhillon, meanwhile, represented India 327 times and played a crucial role during the 1990s and early 2000s, contributing both as a playmaker and goal scorer.

The rankings also include iconic names such as Pargat Singh, Mukesh Kumar, Baljit Singh Saini, and Vasudevan Bhaskaran. Pargat Singh revolutionised Indian defending through his aggressive style and inspirational leadership, while Mukesh Kumar was among the country's most prolific forwards. Baljit Singh Saini brought consistency to the midfield, and Bhaskaran captained India to Olympic gold at the 1980 Moscow Games, one of the defining moments in Indian sporting history.

What makes these numbers even more remarkable is the changing nature of international hockey. Earlier generations played fewer matches due to a limited international calendar. Modern players, meanwhile, compete in an increasingly demanding schedule that includes the FIH Pro League, World Cups, Asian Games, Champions Trophy-era competitions and Olympic qualifiers. Despite the differences in eras, every player on this list shares one common trait an unwavering commitment to representing India.

While Manpreet currently sits at the top, several active stars are steadily climbing the rankings. Players such as Harmanpreet Singh, Mandeep Singh, and Amit Rohidas continue to add caps and could eventually challenge some of these historic milestones in the coming years. For now, however, the list stands as a tribute to the players who have shaped Indian hockey across generations. Their achievements represent not just longevity but also dedication, sacrifice and excellence at the highest level.

And at the summit of that remarkable list stands Manpreet Singh — the most-capped player in the history of Indian hockey.
