India’s track and field excellence was celebrated at the inaugural Indian Athletics Awards as Olympic javelin star Neeraj Chopra and distance-running sensation Parul Chaudhary were named the Best Male Athlete and Best Female Athlete of the Year 2025, respectively.

The honours recognise two athletes who have consistently carried Indian athletics to new heights through record-breaking performances and podium finishes on the international stage. While Neeraj continued to redefine the limits of Indian javelin by becoming the first athlete from the country to breach the 90-metre mark, Parul enjoyed another outstanding season that reinforced her status as India’s premier distance runner.

Their recognition reflects not only their achievements in 2025 but also their sustained contribution to the growth of Indian athletics over recent years.

For most athletes, a season featuring a national record and a historic achievement would be considered extraordinary. For Neeraj Chopra, however, it was simply another chapter in a remarkable career.

Although the two-time Olympic medallist and two-time World Championships medallist has set exceptionally high standards for himself, 2025 saw him achieve something no Indian had managed before crossing the coveted 90-metre barrier in the javelin throw.

Neeraj launched the spear to 90.23 metres, breaking his own national record and becoming the first Indian ever to record a 90m-plus throw. The performance further cemented his place as the greatest track and field athlete India has produced.

The achievement carried symbolic importance as well, with the 90-metre milestone long regarded as the benchmark separating elite global throwers from the rest of the field. By surpassing it, Neeraj reaffirmed his ability to compete consistently among the very best in the world. His 2026 campaign has also begun positively. Returning to international competition after a 272-day break, he opened his season with a best throw of 85.69 metres at the Doha Diamond League, finishing fourth and laying a strong foundation for the months ahead.

While Neeraj dominated the throwing events, Parul Chaudhary once again demonstrated why she is among Asia’s finest distance runners. The national record holder in both the 3000m steeplechase and 5000m, Parul enjoyed another memorable campaign in 2025 by winning silver medals in both events at the Asian Athletics Championships.

Her consistency across multiple championships has made her one of India’s most dependable performers in middle- and long-distance racing.

Adding to her impressive résumé, Parul recently lowered her own national record in the women’s 5000m, clocking a lifetime best of 15:04.26. The performance highlighted her continued improvement and her ability to compete at increasingly higher levels despite already being among the country’s most accomplished athletes.

Her achievements build on a remarkable run that includes gold in the 5000m and silver in the 3000m steeplechase at the 2023 Asian Games, establishing her as one of the leading figures in Indian athletics.

One of the defining qualities shared by both Neeraj and Parul is their remarkable consistency. For Neeraj, every major competition brings expectations of medals and record-breaking throws, and he has repeatedly delivered despite carrying the pressure of being India’s biggest athletics star.

Similarly, Parul has evolved into a dependable performer who continues to improve her personal bests while regularly reaching podiums at major continental championships.

Their ability to maintain elite standards over multiple seasons distinguishes them from many contemporaries and makes them worthy recipients of the AFI’s highest individual honours.

Beyond medals and records, both athletes have played a vital role in inspiring young Indians to pursue athletics. Neeraj’s Olympic success transformed public interest in javelin throw and track and field events, encouraging increased participation across the country. His historic 90.23m effort serves as further evidence that Indian athletes can compete with and surpass the world's best.

Parul’s journey has been equally inspiring, particularly for aspiring distance runners. Her steady rise through domestic and international competition demonstrates the rewards of perseverance, disciplined training and long-term development.

Together, they represent two different disciplines but a shared commitment to excellence.

The inaugural Indian Athletics Awards aim to honour athletes who have elevated the sport and contributed to its rapid growth in recent years. Recognising Neeraj Chopra and Parul Chaudhary as the Best Male and Female Athletes of 2025 acknowledges not only their performances during the season but also their broader impact on Indian athletics.

Their achievements have helped raise the profile of the sport nationally while proving that Indian competitors can consistently challenge for honours on the biggest stages.

As preparations intensify for future global competitions, both athletes remain central to India’s ambitions.

Neeraj Chopra will continue pursuing major titles while pushing the boundaries of Indian javelin throwing, and Parul Chaudhary will aim to build on her national records and continental success in distance events.

Their recognition at the inaugural Indian Athletics Awards is therefore more than a celebration of past accomplishments—it is a reflection of the standards they continue to set for Indian sport. With Neeraj redefining excellence in field events and Parul leading the nation’s distance-running revolution, Indian athletics enters the coming years with two exceptional ambassadors at its forefront.
