Indian athletics fans have received the news they were eagerly waiting for. Neeraj Chopra’s name has officially appeared on the entry list for the Doha Diamond League, confirming that the Olympic champion will begin his 2026 season at the prestigious meeting on June 19.

The announcement ends speculation surrounding Chopra’s opening competition of the year after earlier promotional material for the men’s javelin event did not include his name. With the official entry list now released, India’s biggest athletics star is set to return to a venue that has become one of the most memorable stops of his career.

For Chopra, Doha represents more than just another Diamond League event. It is the stadium where he finally achieved one of the most sought-after milestones in world javelin throwing.

The last time Chopra competed at the Doha Diamond League, he produced the throw that Indian athletics fans had waited years to witness. In 2025, the two-time Olympic medallist finally breached the coveted 90-metre barrier, launching the javelin beyond the mark for the first time in his career while simultaneously setting a new Indian national record.

For years, Chopra had consistently thrown in the high 80s while collecting Olympic, World Championship, Asian Games and Diamond League medals. Yet the 90m mark remained one of the few achievements missing from his extraordinary résumé.

That changed in Doha. The breakthrough not only silenced discussions about whether he could cross the barrier but also reinforced his standing among the greatest javelin throwers of his generation.

The Doha field once again promises elite competition. Among the athletes expected to challenge for victory is Germany’s Julian Weber, whose rivalry with Chopra has become one of the defining storylines in modern men’s javelin. The two athletes first competed against each other in 2016 and have shared the runway on numerous occasions over the past decade. Their rivalry reached another level in Doha last year when both athletes crossed the 90-metre mark for the first time in their careers during the same competition.

That moment represented a significant milestone not only for Chopra and Weber individually but also for the event itself, showcasing the remarkable standards currently being produced in men’s javelin.

With both throwers now established members of the exclusive 90m club, another fascinating battle could be in store when they meet again in Qatar.

The preliminary entry list suggests Chopra will face another quality field in Doha. Among the names listed are Czech Republic’s Jakub Vadlejch, former world champion Julius Yego of Kenya, Grenada’s Anderson Peters, Trinidad and Tobago’s Keshorn Walcott, Egypt’s Ahmed Sameh Mohamed Hussein, Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage, Ukraine’s Artur Felfner, and American thrower Curtis Thompson.

Several athletes in the field have already produced throws beyond 85 metres this season, while Pathirage enters with a season best of 92.62m, highlighting the level of competition Chopra can expect.

For fans, the event offers an early opportunity to assess where the Indian star stands against the world’s best as the season begins.

Originally scheduled for May 8, the Doha Diamond League was postponed and rescheduled for June 19, resulting in a slightly later start to Chopra’s campaign than initially anticipated. The additional preparation time may ultimately prove beneficial for the Indian thrower, who has often prioritised long-term fitness and peak performance over early-season competition.

Throughout his career, Chopra has demonstrated a patient approach to planning his schedule, focusing on major championships and maintaining consistency across the season. With the World Athletics Championships and other major international competitions looming later in the year, Doha provides an ideal platform to assess his form.

Every season involving Neeraj Chopra attracts immense attention, but 2026 carries particular significance. Having already achieved Olympic gold, World Championship gold, Diamond League success and the elusive 90-metre throw, Chopra continues to redefine expectations for Indian athletics.

His performances have transformed the profile of track and field in India and inspired a new generation of athletes across multiple disciplines. The Doha Diamond League will offer the first glimpse of his competitive level this year and could set the tone for the months ahead.

For Indian athletics supporters, June 19 has suddenly become one of the most anticipated dates of the season. The return of Neeraj Chopra to the venue where he broke the 90m barrier adds an extra layer of excitement to an already prestigious Diamond League meeting.

Whether he challenges another national record, renews his rivalry with Julian Weber or simply uses the competition to build rhythm for the season ahead, one thing is certain: when Neeraj Chopra steps onto the runway in Doha, the athletics world will be watching.

And given his history at the venue, few would bet against another memorable performance from India’s greatest-ever track and field athlete.
