NorthEast United vs Mohun Bagan: Defending Champions Chase Durand Cup Three-Peat in Blockbuster Semifinal

Defending champions NorthEast United face 17-time winners Mohun Bagan in the Durand Cup 2026 semifinal, with a place in the final at stake in Shillong.
Defending champions NorthEast United FC will face 17-time winners Mohun Bagan Super Giant in a high-stakes semifinal of the 135th IndianOil Durand Cup in Shillong on Thursday.
The clash at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, scheduled to kick off at 7 PM on August 20, will bring together two teams chasing very different pieces of history.
For NorthEast United, it is an opportunity to move one step closer to an unprecedented third consecutive Durand Cup title. For Mohun Bagan, the competition's most successful club, it is a chance to reach another final and potentially set up a blockbuster Kolkata derby against East Bengal.
The semifinal will also mark a major test for Mohun Bagan's newly appointed head coach Panagiotis Dilmperis, who will be looking to secure his first piece of silverware with the club ahead of the 2026-27 Indian Super League season.
With both teams arriving in Shillong with fully fit squads, the stage is set for one of the biggest matches of this year's tournament.
NorthEast United chasing history
NorthEast United have been relentless in their title defence. The Highlanders booked their place in the semifinals for a fourth consecutive season after producing one of the most dramatic comebacks of the tournament against Shillong Lajong FC.
Playing against the home favourites, NorthEast United trailed 2-1 at half-time. But the defending champions completely transformed the contest after the break, scoring four goals in a devastating second-half performance to secure a 5-2 victory.
Moroccan forward Alaaeddine Ajaraie was the standout performer, scoring a sensational hat-trick and once again underlining his importance to the Highlanders' attacking system. His form will be crucial against a Mohun Bagan defence that has been among the most disciplined sides in the competition.
NorthEast United head coach Juan Pedro Benali is fully aware of the magnitude of the challenge. “It’s the semi-final of the Durand Cup, a very important game for us, and also for Mohun Bagan,” Benali said.
“It will not be easy for either team. We’re talking about an opponent where nearly all their domestic players are national team regulars, combined with highly talented foreign players and a great coach.” The Highlanders are now attempting something extraordinary. A victory would put them into a third consecutive final and keep alive their dream of completing a historic Durand Cup three-peat.
Mohun Bagan's defensive strength meets NorthEast's attacking momentum
While NorthEast United have relied on attacking firepower, Mohun Bagan's campaign has been built on defensive structure and clinical execution. The Mariners came through the group stage without conceding a single goal, demonstrating the solidity that has become one of their biggest strengths under Dilmperis. Their quarterfinal against Jamshedpur FC, however, proved far more dramatic.
After a 1-1 draw in regulation time, Mohun Bagan survived a marathon sudden-death penalty shootout, eventually winning 9-8. Goalkeeper Vishal Kaith emerged as one of the heroes, delivering when the pressure was at its highest. The semifinal will therefore present an intriguing tactical contrast.
NorthEast United scored five goals in their quarterfinal, while Mohun Bagan have demonstrated the ability to shut down opposition attacks and grind out results in difficult situations. The battle between Ajaraie and Mohun Bagan's defensive unit, led by Subhasish Bose, could prove decisive.
Sahal Abdul Samad leads Mohun Bagan's attack
Mohun Bagan will also have major threats at the other end of the pitch. Sahal Abdul Samad has been in exceptional form under Dilmperis, scoring five goals to place himself firmly in the Golden Boot race. The attacking midfielder has combined goalscoring with his usual creative responsibilities, becoming one of the key figures in Mohun Bagan's campaign.
The Mariners also possess significant attacking depth through Jamie Maclaren, Dejan Drazic and Liston Colaco. Stopping that combination will be one of NorthEast United's biggest challenges. Spanish centre-back Eneko Satrustegui will be central to that effort. Still adapting to Indian football, the defender brings considerable experience from Spanish football, including matches against clubs such as Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.
His partnership with goalkeeper Gurmeet Singh will be crucial against a Mohun Bagan attack capable of punishing even the smallest defensive mistake. Gurmeet, the 2025 Golden Glove winner, stressed the importance of mentality heading into the semifinal. “My expectation is to start the game with the right mentality, stay focused from the first minute, and give everything for the team,” he said.
NorthEast United, according to the goalkeeper, will need to remain compact, win individual battles and take their opportunities when they arrive.
Despite NorthEast United's recent success in the Durand Cup, the overall head-to-head record heavily favours Mohun Bagan. The two sides have met 13 times previously, with Mohun Bagan winning 10 matches. NorthEast United have won twice, while one encounter ended in a draw. That record will give the Mariners confidence, but cup football often creates its own momentum.
NorthEast United enter the semifinal as defending champions and with the belief that comes from winning back-to-back titles. Mohun Bagan, meanwhile, carry the weight of history as the tournament's most successful club. Benali also acknowledged his personal relationship with opposite number Dilmperis but made it clear that friendship will have no relevance once the match begins.
“Panos is a friend, but inside the field, there are no friends,” Benali said.
The stakes could hardly be higher. A NorthEast United victory would take the Highlanders one step closer to a historic three-peat. A Mohun Bagan win could set up a dream Durand Cup final against East Bengal, creating one of Indian football's most anticipated derby occasions.
On Thursday night in Shillong, history, momentum and a place in the final will all be on the line.
