Nousheen Naz Stars as India Beat Malaysia in U18 Asia Cup Opener

India's U18 Women's Hockey Team made a winning start to its U18 Asia Cup 2026 campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Malaysia in their opening Pool A encounter in Kakamigahara, Japan, on Saturday.
The star of the match was 15-year-old forward Nousheen Naz, who scored both goals for India and earned the Player of the Match award. Her clinical finishing proved decisive as India secured three valuable points in a contest that tested both their attacking quality and defensive resilience.
The victory places India in a strong position early in the tournament, with the team currently second in Pool A behind Korea on goal difference. Both sides have three points ahead of their highly anticipated meeting in the next round.
India entered the tournament looking to make a positive statement and controlled large periods of possession in the opening stages. Despite creating several attacking opportunities, the Indian forwards found it difficult to break down a disciplined Malaysian defence during the first quarter. Malaysia remained compact at the back and successfully prevented India from finding clear shooting opportunities inside the circle.
The opening 15 minutes ended without a goal, but India looked the more threatening side and continued to apply pressure through sustained attacks and frequent entries into the attacking third.
Their persistence would soon be rewarded.
The breakthrough arrived in the 19th minute from a penalty corner. India had already begun to establish territorial dominance and were earning opportunities from set-piece situations. When another penalty corner came their way, Nousheen Naz reacted quickly to convert and finally break the deadlock. The goal was a deserved reward for India's positive start and gave the team a crucial 1-0 lead.
Scoring first also allowed India to play with greater confidence, increasing the tempo of their attacks while forcing Malaysia to commit more players forward in search of an equaliser.
For Nousheen, it was the perfect way to announce herself on the continental stage.
The Indian forward was not done yet. As the second quarter progressed, India continued to dominate possession and create chances. Their attacking pressure paid off once again in the 28th minute when Nousheen produced another decisive contribution. The 15-year-old found space inside the attacking area and fired a sharp shot past the Malaysian goalkeeper to double India's lead.
The goal highlighted her composure in front of goal and gave India a commanding 2-0 advantage just before the half-time hooter. At the break, India appeared firmly in control of proceedings. Their attack was functioning effectively, while the defence had limited Malaysia's opportunities throughout the opening two quarters.
The second half presented a different challenge. Trailing by two goals, Malaysia increased their intensity and began to apply greater pressure on the Indian defence. The contest became more physical and competitive as the Malaysian side searched for a route back into the game.
Their efforts were rewarded in the 41st minute when Nur Azli found the back of the net to reduce the deficit to 2-1. The goal shifted momentum and ensured the final quarter would be a tense affair for the Indian side.
With only one goal separating the teams, Malaysia sensed an opportunity to salvage at least a point from the match.
The final quarter tested India's defensive organisation and composure. Malaysia pushed forward in search of an equaliser, while India focused on protecting their narrow advantage. The Indian defenders responded well under pressure, limiting Malaysia's clear chances and maintaining their structure during crucial moments.
Despite the increased pressure, India refused to concede another goal. The defensive unit held firm throughout the closing stages, ensuring Nousheen's two first-half goals remained enough to secure victory. The ability to protect a one-goal lead under pressure will be particularly encouraging for the coaching staff as the tournament progresses.
Beyond the result, there were several encouraging aspects of India's performance. The team created numerous scoring opportunities and earned an impressive 16 penalty corners during the match, highlighting their attacking intent and ability to consistently pressure the Malaysian defence. While converting more of those chances remains an area for improvement, the volume of opportunities created demonstrates India's ability to generate attacking momentum.
Nousheen Naz's emergence was another major positive. At just 15 years of age, the forward showed composure beyond her years and delivered when her team needed her most.
The victory gives India an ideal start to their U18 Asia Cup campaign, but a much tougher challenge now awaits. India will face Korea in their next Pool A match on Sunday, May 31. With both teams opening their campaigns with victories, the contest could play a significant role in determining the group standings.
For now, however, India's young squad can celebrate a successful start. Led by a standout performance from Nousheen Naz and backed by a resilient defensive display, the team has taken the first important step in its quest for success at the U18 Asia Cup 2026.
