Pipers Bounce Back to Beat Alaskan Knights, Mumba Masters Keep Final Hopes Alive in GCL

Defending champions Alpine APL Pipers bounced back from a heavy defeat to Ganges Grandmasters to beat PBG Alaskan Knights 11-6 and move to the top of the Global Chess League standings in Bengaluru on Thursday.

The Pipers endured a difficult start to the day, going down 4-12 to the Grandmasters, but responded strongly in their second match. Their victory over the Alaskan Knights took them to the summit, although their position remained under threat as Ganges Grandmasters and FYERS American Gambits were set to meet in the final match of the day.

The Global Chess League, a joint initiative of Tech Mahindra and FIDE, has produced another tightly contested season, with several teams still in contention for the final.

The opening match of the day carried significant importance, with both Ganges Grandmasters and Alpine APL Pipers scheduled to play twice. Ganges made the perfect start to their day, producing a convincing 12-4 victory over the defending champions without dropping a game. The result underlined their credentials as one of the leading title contenders in Season 4.

Stavroula Tsolakidou set the tone by handing Koneru Humpy her second defeat of the tournament. The biggest moment came on the Superstar men's board, where two-time World Cup winner Levon Aronian defeated Anish Giri. Aronian turned the game in his favour by making the most of an additional knight in the endgame and eventually secured victory in 61 moves. The Armenian admitted afterwards that he had been fortunate to escape with the full points.

“I got lucky, very lucky,” Aronian said, while acknowledging that winning the game was a huge stroke of fortune despite his belief that he could still find the best moves.

His performance earned him the Player of the Match award and gave Ganges a commanding victory over the defending champions.

The Pipers' response came almost immediately. World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen produced a strong performance with the white pieces to defeat Viswanathan Anand, giving the defending champions an important boost against the PBG Alaskan Knights. Koneru Humpy also bounced back from her earlier loss to register her fourth victory of the tournament. She defeated Nino Batsiashvili, handing the latter her first defeat of Season 4.

Volodar Murzin then defeated prodigy Abhimanyu Mishra in a tense time scramble, putting the Pipers firmly in control of the match. The Alaskan Knights managed to claim four points through 15-year-old Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus, who secured a win with the black pieces after Vidit Gujrathi ran out of time on the Superstar men's board. The Pipers ultimately closed out an 11-6 victory, allowing the defending champions to recover from their earlier setback and return to the top of the table.

However, their position at the summit was not secure, with Ganges Grandmasters and FYERS American Gambits having the opportunity to move ahead depending on the result of their later encounter.

Mumba Masters Stay in the Race

CheQ Mumba Masters also kept their hopes of reaching the final alive with an emphatic 14-5 victory over Triveni Continental Kings. The Mumba Masters were particularly impressive with the black pieces, winning three of the six games. Alexandra Kosteniuk provided the only victory for the Continental Kings. Maxime Vachier-Lagrave produced one of the key performances for the Mumba Masters, defeating Alireza Firouzja on the icon board. On the Superstar men's board, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov defeated Aravindh Chithambaram.

Bardiya Daneshvar also contributed a victory on the prodigy board as Mumba Masters dominated the match. The 14-5 result took the Mumba Masters' game-points tally to 73 from eight matches, with four wins, keeping them firmly in contention for a place in the final.

With the league entering its decisive phase, every match is now carrying greater significance. The Pipers have demonstrated their ability to recover from a setback, Ganges have strengthened their title credentials with a statement victory, and Mumba Masters remain within striking distance. 

Friday's schedule will provide another major test, with three matches lined up. Triveni Continental Kings and PBG Alaskan Knights will meet first before the defending champions Alpine APL Pipers take on FYERS American Gambits. The day will conclude with a clash between Ganges Grandmasters and CheQ Mumba Masters.
