Indian high jumper Sarvesh Kushare continued his remarkable rise in international athletics by securing a podium finish on his Diamond League debut, finishing third in the men's high jump at the prestigious Monaco Diamond League on Friday.

Competing against some of the world's finest jumpers, the 31-year-old produced a flawless display up to 2.26 metres, eventually claiming third place behind Ukraine's Oleh Doroshchuk and Great Britain's Jack Kimani. Doroshchuk won the competition with a clearance of 2.32m, while Kimani finished second after clearing 2.30m. Kushare's best effort of 2.26m was enough to secure an impressive podium finish on one of athletics' biggest stages.

The result also made Kushare only the fourth Indian athlete to finish in the top three at a Diamond League meeting, joining an elite list that includes Neeraj Chopra, Vikas Gowda, and Murali Sreeshankar.

Kushare's performance in Monaco was built on consistency and composure. The Indian cleared 2.12m, 2.16m, 2.20m, 2.23m, and 2.26m, all on his first attempt, making him one of the standout performers of the evening. At one stage in the competition, only Kushare and eventual champion Doroshchuk had maintained a perfect record through 2.26m, highlighting the Indian's excellent rhythm throughout the event.

His sequence of clean jumps demonstrated both technical precision and mental strength against an elite international field. After successfully clearing 2.26m, Kushare attempted 2.28m but narrowly failed in all three attempts, ending his campaign with a highly creditable third-place finish.

The Monaco Diamond League regularly attracts the world's leading athletes, making Kushare's podium finish even more significant. Ukraine's Oleh Doroshchuk, one of the leading high jumpers on the international circuit, claimed victory with 2.32m, while Britain's Jack Kimani secured second after clearing 2.30m. Despite facing athletes with considerably more Diamond League experience, Kushare remained composed throughout the competition and matched them jump for jump until the final heights.

Finishing ahead of several established international competitors underlined the progress the Indian has made over the past year.

Kushare's latest achievement adds to what has been an extraordinary period in his career. Rather than slowing down after turning 30, the Maharashtra athlete has enjoyed the finest phase of his career.

Among his recent milestones are:

  • Setting a new Indian National Record of 2.31m.

  • Becoming the first Indian to clear the 2.30m barrier.

  • Reaching the World Athletics Championships final, another first for an Indian high jumper.

  • Finishing third on his Diamond League debut.

  • Becoming only the fourth Indian athlete to stand on a Diamond League podium.

The sequence of achievements highlights not only his technical development but also his ability to consistently perform against the world's best athletes.

For many years, the men's high jump remained one of India's least successful athletics disciplines on the global stage. That narrative has begun to change through Kushare's performances.

His national record of 2.31m established a new benchmark for Indian high jump, while his qualification for the World Championships final demonstrated that Indian athletes are capable of competing at the highest level in technical field events. The podium finish in Monaco further strengthens that belief. Success at a Diamond League meeting is widely regarded as one of the toughest achievements outside major global championships, given the consistently high quality of competition.

By finishing among the top three on debut, Kushare has shown that Indian high jump is capable of challenging the world's elite.

The timing of Kushare's performance could prove particularly significant. With major international competitions approaching later this season, including the World Athletics Championships, the Monaco result provides an important confidence boost. Clearing 2.26m comfortably against world-class opposition suggests he remains in excellent form and is capable of challenging for another deep run on the global stage.

Although he narrowly missed 2.28m, his flawless progression through the earlier heights indicates there is still room for further improvement as the season progresses. His consistency will be especially encouraging for the Indian athletics coaching staff, who have seen Kushare establish himself as one of the country's most reliable performers.

Indian athletics has enjoyed significant success in recent years through athletes such as Neeraj Chopra, Murali Sreeshankar, Avinash Sable, and Parul Chaudhary. Kushare's emergence adds another dimension to that progress. His Diamond League podium is another indication that Indian athletes are no longer competing merely for qualification or respectable finishes but are increasingly challenging for medals against the world's best.

The achievement also reflects the growing depth within Indian athletics, with success now coming across throws, jumps, middle-distance running, and endurance events.

Sarvesh Kushare's journey serves as a reminder that athletic careers do not always follow conventional timelines. Many athletes reach their peak in their mid-to-late twenties, but Kushare has elevated his performances after the age of 30, rewriting Indian high jump history in the process. His flawless jumping through 2.26m in Monaco, combined with his national record and World Championships final appearance, has established him as India's greatest men's high jumper to date.

More importantly, his performances are creating new benchmarks for the next generation of Indian athletes. With confidence growing and major championships still ahead this season, Kushare's impressive Diamond League debut could be another significant step in what has already become one of the most remarkable late-career breakthroughs in Indian athletics.
