Satwik-Chirag Reach China Masters Final for Third Time in Four Years

India’s top-ranked men’s doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty are through to the final of the China Masters after overcoming Malaysia’s Nur Mohd Azriyn and Tan Wee Kiong in a hard-fought three-game semifinal at the Shenzhen Arena on Saturday.

The Indian duo, popularly known as the ‘Smash Bros’, produced a composed performance under pressure to win 21-16, 18-21, 21-11 in one hour and six minutes. The victory also gave them another opportunity to fight for the China Masters title, with the pair reaching the tournament final for the third time in four years since 2023.

For Satwik and Chirag, the result represents another important step in their campaign and further underlines their consistency at one of the biggest events on the BWF calendar.

The semifinal did not begin according to plan for the Indian pair. Satwik and Chirag found themselves trailing 0-5 early in the opening game as the Malaysian combination made the more confident start. Rather than allowing the early deficit to dictate the game, however, the Indians quickly settled into their rhythm.

The turnaround was emphatic.

The Indian pair put together a run of seven consecutive points, moving from 0-5 down to 7-5 ahead. That sequence shifted the momentum of the contest and allowed Satwik and Chirag to take control of the opening game.

Once in front, the Indians maintained their advantage and managed the game effectively. They eventually closed out the first game 21-16, putting themselves one game away from another China Masters final.

The Malaysians, however, refused to surrender.

The second game became considerably more competitive as Nur Mohd Azriyn and Tan Wee Kiong found ways to challenge the Indian pair. With the momentum shifting back and forth, the Malaysians managed to stay close and eventually earned the opportunity to force a deciding game. Satwik and Chirag were unable to close out the contest in straight games, with the Malaysian pair taking the second game 21-18.

The semifinal was therefore reduced to a winner-takes-all third game. For the Indians, the decider presented another test of their ability to maintain composure after losing a game they would have hoped to finish.

‘Smash Bros’ dominate the decider

The third game, however, belonged firmly to Satwik and Chirag. The 2022 Asian Games champions immediately established control and left the Malaysian pair with little opportunity to build momentum. Their attacking game became increasingly effective, while their ability to maintain pressure prevented their opponents from finding a sustained response.

Satwik and Chirag continued to build their advantage as the game progressed. Even when the Malaysians managed to save two match points, the Indian pair remained composed. There was no dramatic late collapse as Satwik and Chirag completed the job, winning the deciding game 21-11.

After one hour and six minutes of action, the Indian duo had secured their place in yet another China Masters final.

The victory carries additional significance because of the pair's record at the event. Since 2023, Satwik and Chirag have now reached the China Masters final three times in four years. Their repeated presence in the latter stages demonstrates their ability to perform consistently at the tournament despite the strength of the men's doubles field.

The result also adds another chapter to the partnership's remarkable rise over the past several seasons.

Satwik's power from the rear court and Chirag's speed, net play and attacking instincts have made the Indian combination one of the most feared pairs on the international circuit. Their ability to recover from difficult situations, as demonstrated by their 0-5 start in the semifinal, remains one of their biggest strengths.

But the job is not finished yet.

Satwik and Chirag will now face China's He Ji Ting and Ren Xiang Yu.

For Satwik and Chirag, meanwhile, the objective is straightforward: convert another China Masters final appearance into a championship.

After battling back from 0-5 down in the opening game, surviving the Malaysians' fightback in the second and then dominating the decider, the Indian pair have once again demonstrated why they remain among the leading forces in world men's doubles badminton.

Now, one more victory stands between the ‘Smash Bros’ and another China Masters title.
