Indian athletics will once again place its faith in a promising new generation as the Athletics Federation of India announced a strong 48-member squad for the Asian U20 Athletics Championships 2026 scheduled to be held in Hong Kong from May 28 to May 31.

The Indian contingent, selected primarily on performances at the National Junior Federation Cup in Karnataka, features several athletes who have already produced national records, meet records and international-standard performances over the last few months. Leading the squad is long jumper Shahnavaz Khan, who enters the continental championships as one of India’s biggest medal hopes after producing a sensational national U20 record jump of 8.23m earlier this season.

Among all the names selected, Shahnavaz stands out as arguably the most exciting prospect. His massive 8.23m leap at the National Junior Federation Cup not only broke the Indian U20 national record but also immediately elevated him into elite Asian junior-level territory.

Crossing the 8m barrier at junior level is considered a major milestone globally because it places athletes close to senior international standards much earlier in their careers. The jump has already generated significant attention within Indian athletics circles because very few Indian long jumpers historically have achieved such distances at a young age.

With that performance, Shahnavaz now heads to Hong Kong carrying genuine expectations of a medal and potentially much more.

India’s sprint squad also looks significantly stronger than previous editions. Abhay Singh has emerged as one of the fastest-rising names after breaking the men’s U20 national record in the 200m with a timing of 20.82 seconds. The performance highlighted India’s growing depth in sprinting following the broader rise seen at senior level during the Federation Cup earlier this month.

In the women’s category, Aarti will be closely watched after clocking 24.46s to win silver in the women’s 200m during domestic competition.

Meanwhile, athletes like Mohammed Ashfaq and Piyush Raj strengthen India’s relay and quarter-mile depth significantly. Ashfaq, in particular, will compete in multiple events including the 400m, men’s relay and mixed relay.

One of India’s strongest medal contenders could emerge in the men’s 800m through Venkatram Reddy Mogali. The youngster impressed heavily during the Junior Federation Cup after clocking 1:49.02 and setting a meet record. That timing positions him competitively within the Asian U20 field and continues India’s improving middle-distance tradition at junior level.

In the high jump, Basant enters the championships after clearing an impressive 2.21m domestically. The mark reflects the broader rise currently happening in Indian high jump across both junior and senior categories. India’s women’s high jump hopes will rest on Pooja, another athlete who has consistently delivered strong domestic performances this season.

India’s throws program continues to generate exciting junior athletes as well. Rishabh Giri heads into the championships after throwing 72.96m in men’s javelin to secure bronze during domestic competition. Meanwhile, Poonam produced one of the standout performances in women’s throws after registering 51.64m in the javelin.

India’s throws squad also includes competitors in discus and hammer throw events, reflecting increasing event diversity at junior level.

India have traditionally performed strongly in relay events at Asian junior competitions, and the 2026 squad again appears built with relay depth in mind. The men’s and women’s 4x100m and 4x400m squads include several athletes doubling across individual and relay events, allowing India to maximise medal opportunities. Mixed relay events may also become important because India have steadily improved in relay coordination and squad depth across junior athletics.

India enter the championships with momentum after finishing third in the medal table during the previous edition held in Dubai.

At the 2024 Asian U20 Athletics Championships, India secured 7 gold medals, 11 silver medals & 11 bronze medals for a total of 29 medals Only China and Japan finished ahead of India in the final standings. That performance established India as one of Asia’s strongest junior athletics nations and significantly raised expectations for the Hong Kong edition.

The importance of the Asian U20 Championships extends beyond medals alone. Historically, the event has served as a launching platform for future senior stars across Asia. Many of India’s top current athletes first emerged internationally through junior continental championships before transitioning into senior elite competition.

For Indian athletics specifically, the growing strength at U20 level is particularly encouraging because it suggests a healthier long-term development structure than previous generations experienced. Ultimately, the Hong Kong championships will represent more than just another junior competition.

For athletes like Shahnavaz Khan, Abhay Singh, Venkatram Reddy and others, it is an opportunity to establish themselves among Asia’s best young talents and begin building international reputations.

And after several breakthrough performances domestically over the last year, India now heads into the championships with genuine belief that another strong medal haul is possible.
