Som Kumar Earns ND Slovan Contract Extension as Indian Goalkeeper Continues European Football Journey

Indian football's growing footprint in Europe has received another encouraging boost with Som Kumar earning a one-year contract extension at Slovenian second-division club ND Slovan. 

The 21-year-old goalkeeper, who holds an Indian passport and remains eligible to represent the Indian national team, has been rewarded after an impressive first full season in Slovenia, where he established himself as the club's first-choice goalkeeper.

With more young Indian players choosing to develop their careers abroad, Som's progress is another positive sign for Indian football. His journey reflects a growing trend among talented youngsters seeking competitive environments in Europe to sharpen their technical ability, tactical understanding and mental resilience before making an impact at the international level.

Som Kumar joined ND Slovan initially on a six-month loan in September 2025 after struggling for regular game time elsewhere. His performances quickly convinced the Slovenian club to make the move permanent in February 2026, demonstrating the faith the management had in the young goalkeeper. Although he began the campaign as the club's second-choice goalkeeper, Som's work ethic and consistent performances during training helped him earn the starting role.

By the end of the season, he had become the undisputed first-choice goalkeeper, starting 13 of the club's final 14 matches. His performances between the posts played an important role in helping ND Slovan secure valuable points and finish comfortably in the middle of the league table. Recognising both his potential and contribution, the Slovenian club has now rewarded him with a one-year contract extension, ensuring that his European development will continue through the 2026-27 season.

For any young goalkeeper, adapting to European football is rarely straightforward. The demands are significantly different from youth football, with greater physicality, faster decision-making and increased tactical discipline required every week. Som adjusted remarkably well. Across his 13 appearances, he conceded 25 goals—a statistic that reflects the overall strength of the team rather than individual shortcomings. More importantly, he produced several crucial saves in key moments that directly contributed to valuable victories during the campaign.

His growing confidence, command of the penalty area and shot-stopping ability became increasingly evident as the season progressed.

Born in Bengaluru, Som Kumar's football education has been unlike that of most Indian players. While he represented local teams, including Bengaluru FC's youth setup, Boca Juniors Under-13 and the BYFL Academy, much of his footballing development took place in Slovenia. At just 15 years of age, he moved to Europe to join NK Bravo, beginning a journey that exposed him to a highly competitive footballing environment during his formative years.

His willingness to leave home at such a young age demonstrated both ambition and a desire to test himself against stronger competition.

That decision has ultimately shaped his career.

Som's development continued through several Slovenian youth clubs. Loan spells with NK Krka's Under-17 and Under-19 teams provided valuable match experience before he joined Olimpija Ljubljana ahead of the 2023-24 season. There, he enjoyed one of the strongest campaigns of his young career. Recording six clean sheets while conceding just 13 goals, Som attracted attention for his consistency and maturity despite his age.

Those performances eventually opened the door for a move back to India.

Ahead of the 2024-25 Indian Super League season, Kerala Blasters FC secured Som's services as one of India's brightest young goalkeeping prospects. The move represented an opportunity to gain experience in Indian football while competing in one of Asia's fastest-growing leagues. Som featured across the Indian Super League and the Durand Cup, making eight appearances in total.

Although he showed glimpses of his potential, a few costly mistakes combined with strong competition from Sachin Suresh and Nora Fernandes limited his opportunities. Rather than remaining on the bench, Som made the difficult but important decision to return to Europe.

That choice has now proved highly beneficial for his long-term development.

After leaving Kerala Blasters, Som signed for NK Radomlje in February 2025. However, opportunities remained limited, prompting another move—this time to ND Slovan.

Initially viewed as a temporary solution, the transfer became the turning point in his career. Within months, he had established himself as one of the club's most trusted players. His consistent performances ultimately convinced the management to convert the loan into a permanent transfer before offering him an extended contract at the end of the season.

Som Kumar is part of a new generation of Indian footballers choosing overseas development pathways. Players like Yohaan Benjamin, who has represented NK Bravo, along with several members of India's Under-20 setup currently playing in European leagues, reflect a growing belief that exposure to competitive football abroad can accelerate player development. European lower divisions may not attract the attention of elite leagues, but they often provide young players with invaluable experience.

Regular matches against physically stronger opponents, exposure to different tactical systems and higher training standards can significantly improve technical ability and decision-making. For goalkeepers especially, consistent competitive football is essential.

Holding an Indian passport, the 21-year-old remains available for selection should he continue progressing in European football.
