Indian Football League: Sreenidi Deccan Defeat Diamond Harbour to Shake Up Title Race

Sreenidi Deccan FC produced a disciplined and resilient performance to defeat league leaders Diamond Harbour FC 2-1 in a high-intensity top-of-the-table clash in the Star Cement Indian Football League 2025-26 at the Kalyani Stadium on Sunday.
Goals from Brandon Vanlalremdika and David Castañeda late in the first half proved decisive for the Deccan Warriors, while Hugo Díaz pulled one back from the penalty spot after the break for Diamond Harbour. The result tightened the race at the top of the table, with Sreenidi moving to 21 points and climbing into third place, while Diamond Harbour remained leaders on 25 points despite the defeat.
The contest was dramatically altered within the opening minute. Diamond Harbour were reduced to ten men just 45 seconds into the match after Nigerian midfielder Sunday Afolabi was shown a straight red card for a dangerous challenge on Ajay Chhetri. Contesting a loose ball, Afolabi’s high challenge on the ankle left the referee with little hesitation in producing the red card.
Yet despite the numerical disadvantage, Diamond Harbour refused to retreat. In fact, the home side dominated large phases of the opening half and continued to look the more threatening team in attack. Their midfield retained control of possession, while their wide players repeatedly pushed Sreenidi deep inside their own half. Ramdinthara tested goalkeeper Kamaljit Singh with a fierce effort from distance, but the experienced shot-stopper was equal to the attempt. Moments later, a dangerous low cross from Mikel Kortazar nearly created another opening before Sreenidi managed to scramble clear.
The biggest chance of the opening period arrived midway through the half. Jobby Justin did brilliantly to create space inside the box and lay the ball into the path of Hugo Díaz, whose close-range effort seemed destined for the net. However, Kamaljit Singh produced an outstanding reflex save to tip the ball over the crossbar and preserve parity. For long periods, Sreenidi Deccan struggled to create meaningful attacking opportunities. But just before the break, they found inspiration through Brandon Vanlalremdika.
After being brought down outside the penalty area by Kortazar, Brandon stepped up to take the resulting free-kick and produced a moment of pure quality. His curling effort sailed over the wall and into the top-right corner beyond the full stretch of goalkeeper Dheeraj Singh. The goal completely changed the momentum of the game.
Suddenly, Diamond Harbour’s aggressive approach became more vulnerable, and Sreenidi capitalised again deep into first-half stoppage time. Colombian striker David Castañeda picked up possession just outside the box, drove forward confidently and unleashed a powerful strike that flew past Dheeraj Singh to double the visitors’ advantage. It was a ruthless finish to the half from the Deccan Warriors, who had spent much of the opening period absorbing pressure.
Diamond Harbour, however, came out strongly after the restart. Knowing they needed a quick response, the league leaders pushed numbers forward and were rewarded around the hour mark when they earned a penalty after Hadi Idrissou handled the ball inside the area.
Hugo Díaz made no mistake from the spot, smashing the penalty beyond Kamaljit Singh to reduce the deficit to 2-1 and reignite the contest.
The goal injected fresh energy into the home side, prompting head coach Kibu Vicuña to make an aggressive triple substitution. Bryce Miranda, Paul Ramfangzauva and Kevin Ademola were all introduced in an attempt to stretch Sreenidi’s tiring defence. The changes almost produced an immediate reward.
Bryce Miranda looked lively down the left flank and quickly began creating opportunities with his direct running and deliveries into the box. One such cross found Ademola in space, but the forward failed to keep his header down. As the game entered its final phase, Sreenidi Deccan increasingly dropped deeper and focused on protecting their lead. The visitors defended compactly and attempted to deny Diamond Harbour central spaces, forcing the hosts into wider areas.
Despite their relentless attacking pressure, the home side’s numerical disadvantage eventually became more apparent. With only ten men, Diamond Harbour often lacked an extra presence inside the penalty area during crucial moments.
Still, chances continued to arrive. Jobby Justin headed narrowly wide late in the game, while substitute Lalliansanga Renthlei saw a long-range effort drift just past the post. In the final minute of regulation time, Bryce Miranda produced another dangerous cross for Ademola, but Kamaljit Singh once again stepped up with a vital save. The goalkeeper’s performance proved central to Sreenidi’s victory.
Kamaljit not only denied Diamond Harbour during key moments in the first half but also remained composed under sustained late pressure as the visitors protected their advantage.
For Sreenidi Deccan, the win could prove hugely significant in the context of the title race. Defeating the league leaders away from home under pressure sends a strong statement about the team’s ambitions this season. The Deccan Warriors may not have dominated possession, but they showed clinical finishing, defensive discipline and the ability to capitalise on key moments. For Diamond Harbour, meanwhile, the defeat will feel frustrating given how well they competed despite playing nearly the entire match with ten men.
Yet even in defeat, their performance reinforced why they remain at the top of the table.
