Butterfly Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT) is set to usher in a new era of technology-driven officiating with the introduction of the AI-powered Table Tennis Review (TTR) system for Season 7.

The innovation comes as part of an expanded multi-year partnership between Stupa Sports and Ultimate Table Tennis, reinforcing the league's commitment to adopting cutting-edge technology to enhance the sport.

The seventh edition of UTT, scheduled to take place from July 9 to July 26 at the Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Indoor Stadium in Taleigao, Goa, will become the first edition of the league to feature evidence-backed officiating decisions delivered in under 20 seconds. The launch of the TTR system marks one of the most significant technological upgrades in the history of Indian table tennis and further strengthens UTT's reputation as one of the world's most innovative professional table tennis leagues.

Table tennis is among the fastest sports in the world, where points often unfold in a matter of seconds and even the smallest officiating errors can influence the outcome of a match. Recognising these challenges, Stupa Sports has developed the Table Tennis Review system specifically for elite-level competition.

The AI-powered review system is capable of assisting match officials in six critical officiating scenarios:

  • Serve Toss Height

  • Serve Toss Angle

  • Serve Toss Below Surface

  • Serve Toss Inside Surface

  • Serve Ball Hiding

  • Table Edge Calls

These situations are among the most difficult for umpires to judge consistently during high-speed matches.

Using artificial intelligence and computer vision, the system delivers accurate verdicts in less than 20 seconds without significantly interrupting the flow of play.

The technology behind the table tennis review system is built around an extensive camera network and advanced AI processing. Between 14 and 15 high-speed cameras are positioned around each court, capturing every serve, ball trajectory and table contact point from multiple angles simultaneously. When a review is initiated, Stupa Sports' proprietary AI engine reconstructs the disputed incident almost instantly.

The system generates a detailed visual representation of the event, allowing match officials to make evidence-based decisions with greater confidence and accuracy. Importantly, the review output is also integrated directly into the live television broadcast, enabling spectators inside the venue and viewers watching at home to understand how each decision has been reached.

The combination of speed, transparency and precision ensures that technology enhances the game without disrupting its natural rhythm.

Stupa Sports has been closely associated with Ultimate Table Tennis since becoming the league's Official Data and Technology Partner in Season 3 in 2019. Over the years, the partnership has expanded significantly, with the company playing an increasingly important role in modernising the league's technological infrastructure. During Season 4, Stupa introduced its AI-powered live statistics system, enabling real-time data collection and dynamic broadcast graphics.

Since then, the company has managed UTT's complete data ecosystem, including live scoring, player and team databases, standings, performance statistics and analytical reports.

Season 5 saw another innovation with the introduction of Shot Speed Analytics, providing broadcasters, commentators and fans with deeper insights into player performance.

The addition of the table tennis review system represents the next stage in this evolving partnership.

While the primary objective of TTR is to improve officiating accuracy, the technology is expected to significantly enhance the viewing experience as well. Modern sports audiences increasingly expect access to data, analytics and transparent decision-making.

By integrating review visuals directly into the live broadcast, fans gain a clearer understanding of umpiring decisions, similar to technologies already used in sports such as cricket, tennis and football. The system also provides commentators with richer storytelling opportunities while helping broadcasters explain complex officiating calls in real time.

This combination of technology and entertainment aligns with Ultimate Table Tennis' long-standing vision of creating a world-class spectator experience.

Stupa Sports founder and CEO Megha Gambhir believes the table tennis review system represents a major step forward not only for table tennis but also for sports technology globally.

"TTR represents our commitment to bringing speed, precision, and fairness together through technology. Table tennis is one of the fastest sports in the world, and officiating decisions must keep pace with it. With TTR, we are combining advanced computer vision and AI to deliver reliable verdicts in under 20 seconds, setting a new benchmark not just for table tennis, but for sports review systems globally."

Butterfly Ultimate Table Tennis CEO Ekansh Gupta also highlighted how technology has remained central to the league's growth.

"Innovation has always been at the heart of Butterfly Ultimate Table Tennis. Our partnership with Stupa Sports encapsulates that perfectly. The introduction of TTR in Season 7 is another significant step forward, reinforcing our commitment to fairness, transparency, and world-class production standards."

The expanded partnership also reflects Stupa Sports' growing influence within the international sports technology ecosystem. In recent years, the company has built an impressive portfolio across multiple sports. Its AI-powered Instant Review System has received certification from the Badminton World Federation (BWF) for use in sanctioned tournaments, while the company has also served as the data and technology partner for the Pickleball Champions League Asia Finals.

Its innovations have additionally been deployed at the Generali Hexagon Cup Padel tournament through Stupa Cast and in competitions such as Major League Table Tennis and the Prime Volleyball League. Internationally, Stupa Sports has continued expanding its footprint through partnerships with organisations, including Table Tennis Australia.

The introduction of the table tennis review system represents more than just another technological upgrade. It signals a broader transformation in how professional table tennis is officiated, analysed and broadcast. As AI and computer vision become increasingly integrated into elite sport, technologies like TTR are likely to become standard across major international competitions.

For Butterfly Ultimate Table Tennis, introducing the system in Season 7 reinforces its position as one of the most technologically progressive leagues in the sport.

For Stupa Sports, it further establishes the Indian company as a global leader in AI-powered sports technology, demonstrating that innovations developed in India are increasingly shaping the future of international sport.
