Tanu Sharma opened India’s medal account at the U20 World Wrestling Championships 2026 with a silver medal in the women’s 72kg category, but the Indian wrestler was left to reflect on a dramatic final in which she led 3-0 before Japan’s Chisato Yoshida produced a late turnaround to win 5-3.

It was India’s first medal at the ongoing U20 World Wrestling Championships and came after an impressive campaign from Tanu, who had dominated her semifinal to book a place in the gold medal bout.

However, the final against former U17 world champion Yoshida proved to be a contest decided by one decisive moment.

Tanu appeared to have the bout under control for a significant period. The Indian wrestler built a 3-0 lead and looked composed as she attempted to manage the contest against her Japanese opponent. With the clock moving towards the final stages, Tanu remained in a strong position to convert her advantage into a world title.

But Yoshida was not finished. The Japanese wrestler produced a crucial arm throw late in the contest, earning four points to dramatically swing the momentum of the final. The move gave Yoshida a 4-3 lead and transformed a bout that had appeared to be moving in Tanu’s favour.

Yoshida eventually closed out the contest with a 5-3 victory to claim the U20 world title in the women’s 72kg category.

For Tanu, the defeat will undoubtedly be difficult to process given how close she came to winning gold. She had led the final 3-0 and was just moments away from completing one of the biggest victories of her young career before the Japanese wrestler found a decisive scoring opportunity.

The controversy and debate surrounding the scoring of the four-point move may also remain a talking point, but the official result confirmed Yoshida as the U20 world champion and Tanu as the silver medallist. Despite the heartbreak of the final, Tanu’s campaign was one of the standout performances from the Indian contingent.

Her path to the title bout was marked by a dominant semifinal victory over Zahra Karimzada. Tanu overwhelmed her opponent with a relentless series of double-leg attacks, securing an 11-0 technical superiority win in the first period.

The victory was comprehensive and ensured that India would have its first confirmed medal at the U20 World Wrestling Championships.

Tanu’s attacking approach was particularly effective against Karimzada. Rather than allowing the contest to develop into a tactical battle, the Indian wrestler took control from the opening exchanges and repeatedly found success with her double-leg attacks.

The 11-0 result sent her directly into the gold medal match and raised hopes of an Indian world champion in the women’s 72kg category. Her final opponent, Yoshida, arrived with an impressive pedigree of her own. The Japanese wrestler is a former U17 world champion and has been one of the strongest competitors in the age-group wrestling circuit. That experience showed in the final when she remained patient despite falling behind 0-3.

Instead of allowing Tanu’s early advantage to dictate the remainder of the bout, Yoshida continued searching for an opening. When the opportunity arrived, she capitalised with the high-scoring move that changed the course of the contest.

For Tanu, however, the silver medal remains a significant achievement. Winning a medal at the U20 World Wrestling Championships places her among the leading young wrestlers in her weight category and provides another encouraging sign for Indian women’s wrestling. More importantly, her performance demonstrated that she has the ability to compete with elite international wrestlers and put herself in winning positions against established opponents.

The narrow nature of the defeat could also prove to be an important learning experience.

Tanu showed that she could dominate a semifinal and take control of a world-level final. The next stage of her development will be about managing those crucial moments when a lead needs to be protected against opponents capable of producing match-changing moves.

At the U20 level, margins can be extremely small, and the difference between gold and silver is often decided by one exchange.

That was exactly the case in the 72kg final. Tanu had built a 3-0 advantage and appeared to be on course for India’s first gold medal of the championships. Yoshida’s late four-point move changed everything.

Yet, the result should not overshadow the quality of Tanu’s overall campaign. She entered the final after an 11-0 demolition of Karimzada, confirming her medal with one of the most dominant performances of the tournament. She then pushed a former U17 world champion to the limit and came within touching distance of the U20 world title.

India may have missed out on gold in the 72kg category, but Tanu Sharma has delivered the country its first medal of the U20 World Wrestling Championships 2026.

The colour may be silver, but her performance has underlined a bigger message: Tanu Sharma belongs among the world’s leading young wrestlers, and her journey on the international stage is only beginning.
