UP Warriorz have appointed former India cricketer and ICC Hall of Famer Neetu David as their Chief Scout, strengthening the franchise’s focus on talent identification and the development of a sustainable pipeline of emerging women cricketers.

One of the most accomplished figures in Indian women’s cricket, David brings extensive experience from her playing career as well as her work in selection and talent identification. In her new role, she will lead the UP Warriorz scouting programme and work towards identifying promising players from domestic and grassroots cricket across the country.

The appointment is a significant move for the franchise as it looks to strengthen its long-term player identification structure and create a more organised pathway for emerging talent. For David, who was born in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, the role also brings her back to a cricketing ecosystem closely connected with her roots.

Neetu David remains one of the most celebrated names in the history of Indian women’s cricket. The former left-arm spinner claimed 141 wickets in One-Day Internationals for India and remains the holder of one of the most remarkable bowling records in women’s Test cricket.

Her figures of 8/53 in a women's test innings stand as the world record, highlighting the impact she had during her international career. David represented India during an era when women’s cricket did not have the extensive professional structures and opportunities that exist today. Her success was built through consistent performances at the highest level and established her as one of India’s finest spin bowlers.

Her contribution to the sport was formally recognised in 2024 when she was inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame. That honour placed David among the most influential figures in the global history of women’s cricket and acknowledged her achievements both as an individual performer and as a trailblazer for the generations that followed.

From Player to Talent Identifier

David’s contribution to Indian cricket continued after her playing career. She went on to serve as Chairperson of the BCCI’s All-India Women’s Selection Committee, a role that gave her extensive exposure to the domestic cricket ecosystem and the challenges involved in identifying players capable of succeeding at the international level.

That experience is expected to be particularly valuable in her new position with UP Warriorz. Scouting in modern franchise cricket is no longer only about identifying players who are currently producing strong performances. It increasingly involves understanding a player’s potential, temperament, technical development and ability to adapt to higher levels of competition.

David believes that recognising potential is a crucial part of the process. “I am delighted to join UP Warriorz as Chief Scout,” David said.

“Having spent so many years playing and working within Indian women’s cricket, I have seen the tremendous amount of talent that exists across the country.” “For me, scouting is not only about identifying performances, but also recognising potential and understanding what a player can become with the right opportunities and environment.”

Her experience across multiple areas of the game could therefore help the franchise build a wider and more detailed understanding of the available talent pool.

The appointment reinforces UP Warriorz’s intention to create a structured and sustainable scouting network. India’s women’s domestic cricket ecosystem has expanded significantly in recent years, with more players now getting opportunities to compete at age-group, state and senior levels.

The rise of franchise cricket has also created an additional platform for domestic players to showcase their ability. For franchises, identifying talent early can be crucial. Players who perform strongly at domestic and grassroots levels can develop into future franchise and international stars if they receive the right exposure and environment.

David will now work with UP Warriorz to identify such players and strengthen the franchise’s talent pipeline for future seasons. Her knowledge of domestic cricket is expected to be one of the key assets she brings to the role. Having worked as a selector, David understands not only how players perform but also what decision-makers look for when assessing potential at higher levels.

She will now look to apply that experience within a franchise environment.

David’s connection with Uttar Pradesh adds another dimension to the appointment. Born in Kanpur, she remains one of the most successful cricketers to emerge from the state and has played an important role in the growth of women’s cricket in the region. Kshemal Waingankar, COO and Director of Cricket at Capri Sports, said David’s roots in Uttar Pradesh made the association particularly special for the franchise.

“We are delighted to welcome Neetu David to UP Warriorz as our Head of Scouting,” Waingankar said.

“Neetu ji’s contribution to Indian women’s cricket has been exceptional. Her experience both as an international cricketer and as chairperson of the Indian Women’s Selection Committee gives her a unique perspective on identifying talent and understanding what it takes to succeed at the highest level.” He added that the franchise is committed to building a stronger and more sustainable scouting structure capable of identifying and nurturing talent from across India.

“Her roots in Uttar Pradesh make this association even more special for us,” Waingankar said. “As a franchise, we are committed to building a strong and sustainable scouting structure that enables us to identify and nurture the best talent from across the country.”

A Long-Term Investment for UP Warriorz

David’s appointment reflects a broader shift in franchise cricket, where recruitment is increasingly becoming a year-round process rather than one restricted to the period before an auction. A strong scouting network can help teams monitor players over longer periods, understand their development and identify talent before it reaches the wider spotlight.

For UP Warriorz, the addition of a former India great with experience as both a player and selector could prove valuable in building that structure. David now takes on the responsibility of identifying the next generation of women cricketers capable of making an impact at the highest level. Her own journey from Kanpur to international cricket and eventually the ICC Hall of Fame gives her a unique understanding of what emerging players require to progress.

For UP Warriorz, the focus is clear: build a deeper talent pipeline and create opportunities for the next generation.

With Neetu David now leading the scouting programme, the franchise has added one of Indian women’s cricket’s most experienced voices to that mission.
