India produced a commanding all-round performance to crush Sri Lanka by 124 runs in the men’s cricket semifinal at the Asian Games 2026 on Thursday, booking a place in the gold medal match.

After posting 169 for seven from 20 overs, India dismantled Sri Lanka for just 45, completing one of the most emphatic wins of the tournament. The result sends Shreyas Iyer’s side into the final, where India will face Pakistan for the gold medal at Korogi Athletic Park in Nisshin on October 3.

The victory was built around two contrasting phases of India’s performance. Ishan Kishan provided the stability and acceleration with an unbeaten 80 from 46 balls, while India’s bowlers exploited a turning surface ruthlessly to reduce Sri Lanka to 18 for five inside four overs.

India’s batting innings was far from straightforward. The pitch offered considerable assistance to spin, and Sri Lanka used that advantage intelligently. The visitors bowled 17 overs of spin during India’s innings, making stroke-making difficult and regularly breaking partnerships.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, however, provided India with the early momentum. The opener smashed 38 from only 21 balls, giving India the fast start required in a 20-over contest. Once wickets began to fall, the responsibility shifted to Kishan. The left-hander played the anchor role while also providing the late acceleration India needed. His unbeaten 80 came from just 46 deliveries and proved decisive in taking India to 169 for seven.

Kishan’s innings was particularly important because India had not enjoyed a straightforward batting surface. Rather than allowing the difficult conditions to dictate the scoring rate, he held his shape, absorbed the pressure and accelerated towards the end. India finished with 169, setting Sri Lanka a target of 170.

On a pitch where the ball was turning sharply, that already represented a significant challenge.

Bumrah blows away Sri Lanka's top order

Sri Lanka’s chase lasted barely an over before India seized complete control. Jasprit Bumrah struck twice in the opening over, leaving Sri Lanka at 1 for two. The early wickets meant the required run rate immediately became secondary to survival. India’s spinners then took over.

Axar Patel struck twice in his second over, adding to the damage caused by Bumrah. Ravi Bishnoi also contributed with a superb piece of fielding, producing a direct hit that resulted in another dismissal. After four overs, Sri Lanka were 18 for five. Sineth Jawyawardena, Lasith Croospulle, Sohan de Livera, captain Sahan Arachchige and Ashen Bandara had all returned to the pavilion.

The contest was effectively over, but India continued to apply pressure rather than allowing Sri Lanka a route back into the game.

Axar, Washington Sundar and Abhishek Sharma collectively strangled the Sri Lankan middle and lower order. The surface, which had already made batting difficult during India's innings, became increasingly unforgiving when Sri Lanka attempted to attack the spinners. The Indian bowlers were able to vary their pace and exploit the sharp turn, forcing the batters to manufacture shots rather than build conventional partnerships.

Washington Sundar picked up two important wickets as Sri Lanka slipped to 38 for seven after eight overs. There was also significant help from Sri Lanka themselves. Poor running between the wickets contributed to the collapse, with three Sri Lankan batters being run out. That combination India's disciplined bowling, a challenging surface and Sri Lanka's own errors ensured the chase never developed into a contest.

Abhishek Sharma then completed the job with back-to-back wickets, wrapping up the Sri Lankan innings at 45.

The 124-run victory sends India into the Asian Games gold medal match against Pakistan. The semifinal also demonstrated the depth of India's performance. Kishan's 80 not out provided the platform, Sooryavanshi's 38 supplied early momentum, and the bowling attack then transformed a competitive total into a one-sided contest.

India's ability to adapt to the pitch was perhaps the defining feature of the match. With the surface offering substantial turn, Sri Lanka's decision to rely heavily on spin during India's innings kept the scoring under control for periods. But Kishan's ability to remain unbeaten ensured India still reached 169. Once India began bowling, the same conditions became a weapon.

Bumrah's opening burst removed Sri Lanka's top-order resistance, while Axar, Washington and Abhishek ensured there was no recovery. Sri Lanka eventually folded for 45, giving India a 124-run victory and a place in the final. The stakes will now rise considerably. India and Pakistan will meet for the Asian Games gold medal, with India arriving after a semifinal in which both their batting and bowling units delivered at crucial moments.

After Kishan's unbeaten 80 set the foundation, India's bowlers needed only eight overs to reduce Sri Lanka to 38 for seven. The rest was a formality.

The gold medal will now be decided between two of the tournament's biggest rivals.
