UP Warriorz enter the WPL 2027 mini-auction with ₹3.75 crore and eight slots to fill. Explore their retained players, key targets and squad priorities.

The UP Warriorz enter the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2027 mini-auction with the biggest remaining purse of ₹3.75 crore and eight squad positions to fill.

After finishing at the bottom of the standings for the second consecutive season, the franchise has a significant opportunity to reshape its squad under head coach Abhishek Nayar and captain Meg Lanning. The Warriorz managed only two victories during the previous campaign, both against two-time champions Mumbai Indians. While those results demonstrated the team’s potential, inconsistency across the remaining fixtures prevented it from mounting a sustained challenge for a playoff position.

The management has responded with an extensive roster clear-out, retaining just 10 players and releasing nine others, while Tara Norris was traded to the Mumbai Indians. The challenge now is to use its financial advantage to address specific weaknesses rather than simply assemble another collection of high-profile names.

The franchise has retained a core featuring international experience and promising Indian talent.

Retained players: Meg Lanning (captain), Deepti Sharma, Sophie Ecclestone, Phoebe Litchfield, Harleen Deol, Kranti Gaud, Shikha Pandey, Shipra Giri, Simran Shaikh and Pratika Rawal.

Released players: Asha Sobhana, Deandra Dottin, Kiran Navgire, Shweta Sehrawat, Amy Jones, Chloe Tryon, Charli Knott, Gongadi Trisha and Suman Meena.

Tara Norris has been traded to the Mumbai Indians.

Remaining purse: ₹3.75 crore.

Available slots: Eight, including three overseas positions.

The retained group gives UP Warriorz a credible foundation. Lanning brings leadership and top-order experience, Deepti remains central to the batting and bowling plans, while Sophie Ecclestone provides a proven international spin option. Litchfield, meanwhile, emerged as one of the team’s most encouraging performers before injury interrupted her season. The Australian batter scored 243 runs in six innings at a strike rate above 150, demonstrating the attacking potential the franchise needs to preserve. Lanning also contributed 248 runs across eight innings, but individual performances could not compensate for the team’s broader inconsistency.

Wicketkeeping becomes a priority

One of the most immediate tasks for Nayar is to strengthen the wicketkeeping position following the releases of Amy Jones and Shweta Sehrawat. Shipra Giri remains in the squad, but adding another wicketkeeper would provide competition, insurance against injury and greater flexibility in selecting the playing XI. An Indian recruit would be particularly valuable because it would allow UP Warriorz to reserve their overseas positions for specialist match-winners.

Taniya Bhatia and Nuzhat Parween offer experienced alternatives, while Uma Chetry could be an attractive option if the franchise wants a wicketkeeper who can contribute with the bat. Bhavika Ahire represents a younger, developmental alternative. Her experience captaining India Under-19 in the home series against Sri Lanka adds to her appeal as a long-term investment.

The ideal acquisition would combine reliable glovework with the ability to accelerate in the lower middle order, an area where UP Warriorz need greater consistency.

The release of Deandra Dottin leaves another important gap. UP Warriorz need an overseas all-rounder capable of contributing with the bat in the closing overs while offering useful seam bowling. South Africa’s Annerie Dercksen is one possible target. Her combination of middle-order batting and medium-fast bowling could provide balance without requiring the franchise to recruit separate specialists for both roles.

Ireland’s Orla Prendergast is another option, offering batting flexibility and seam-bowling support. Either player could help strengthen the lower middle order and reduce the pressure on Deepti Sharma to contribute in multiple phases.

The decision will depend on availability, auction prices and the role Nayar wants the new recruit to perform. With three overseas slots available, the Warriorz have room to make a meaningful addition without compromising their domestic recruitment plans.

UP Warriorz also need to reconsider their spin-bowling structure after releasing Asha Sobhana and Chloe Tryon. Deepti and Ecclestone provide substantial experience, but a third specialist spinner would give Lanning more options during the middle overs. The choice could be between adding a domestic bowler, such as Parunika Sisodia, or attempting to bring Sobhana back at a price that fits the budget.

Overseas options such as Nonkululeko Mlaba and Jess Jonassen could also enter consideration, although recruiting another international spinner would need to be weighed against the requirement for a seam-bowling all-rounder. The priority should be variety. A complementary spinner who offers a different style or a clear wicket-taking threat would be more useful than simply adding another bowler with an overlapping skill set.

The ₹3.75 crore advantage

UP Warriorz have a significant financial advantage over their rivals. With ₹3.75 crore remaining, they have considerably more spending power than Gujarat Giants, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians. However, the franchise must fill eight positions, including three overseas slots. Concentrating too much money on one marquee player could leave insufficient funds for the remaining squad, making disciplined bidding essential.

A practical approach would be to prioritise an overseas pace-bowling all-rounder and an Indian wicketkeeper, then use the remaining purse to add spin depth, domestic batting options and developing players.

The Warriorz should also remain open to released players if the auction offers them at more favourable prices. Familiarity with the franchise’s setup can be useful, but any buyback must make sense on both performance and financial grounds.

The WPL 2027 mini-auction gives UP Warriorz an opportunity to correct the imbalance that has contributed to consecutive bottom-place finishes. Lanning and Litchfield provide a promising batting foundation, while Deepti and Ecclestone remain important pillars of the bowling attack.

The missing pieces are a dependable wicketkeeper-batter, a more effective seam-bowling all-rounder and sufficient spin depth to sustain pressure through the middle overs.

For Nayar, the task is to translate the franchise’s substantial purse into a coherent team rather than a list of expensive acquisitions. If UP Warriorz fill their vacancies with players whose roles complement the retained core, they can give themselves a stronger platform for the 2027 season.

After two disappointing campaigns, the objective is no longer simply to find occasional wins against the strongest teams. It is to build a balanced squad capable of competing consistently across the tournament.
