The Establishment and Official Launch in Lucknow

Indian professional athletics reached a notable structural milestone in 2026 with the establishment of the Women's Pro Volleyball League, the nation's first national franchise competition dedicated exclusively to women in the sport. Promoted and operated by Power Spike International Private Limited, a New Delhi-based sports management enterprise, the initiative addresses a structural void in domestic athletics. While volleyball maintains wide grassroots participation across India, female athletes historically lacked an enduring commercial platform beyond amateur state championships and public sector departmental employment. The league establishes a self-sustaining ecosystem featuring corporate ownership, television streaming, and direct player contracts.

The tournament officially launched on August 6, 2026, at The Centrum in Lucknow under the promotional banner Rising Queen of the Court. The ceremony drew senior state officials, including Uttar Pradesh Sports Minister Girish Chandra Yadav and State Commission for Women Chairperson Babita Singh Chauhan. Founder Bukhrat Ahmad noted that sporting talent requires structured commercial backing, steady remuneration, and media exposure to thrive. To expand mainstream visibility, the league appointed international wrestler Sangram Singh as its official brand ambassador.

Player Registrations and the Inaugural Auction

Preparations began with an open nationwide registration window concluding on September 15, 2026, which allowed collegiate players, national athletes, and state champions to enter the evaluation pool. This talent identification phase culminated in an auction conducted on October 22 and October 23, 2026.

The bidding produced five joint highest earners commanding the top bid of 2.5 lakh rupees each. Attacker Kavita joined Punjab Sherniz, while Mumbai Dolphins secured prominent hitter Prerona Pal. Bengaluru Thunders acquired national team regular Ezhil Mathi and signed versatile attacker Anna Mathew for the same sum. Rajasthan Queens, owned by entrepreneur Raju Jat under Shri Shyam Homes, secured Shilpa RS as their cornerstone signing. The wider player pool also featured experienced competitors such as Sonika Chaudhary, Rani Khatri, and Radhika Jhons.

Squad Structure, Foreign Quotas, and Player Eligibility

Six city-based franchises will contest the tournament, forming squads of 14 to 15 players each and creating professional roster spots for 84 to 90 athletes. In addition to Punjab, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Rajasthan, the remaining franchises expand the geographical reach into prominent urban sporting centres.

International participation is an essential element of the league framework. League guidelines permit each franchise to sign up to two foreign players on their active roster. This overseas presence is designed to elevate game speed, introduce diverse tactical setups, and offer Indian athletes valuable experience against international competition.

Strict eligibility criteria govern player entry. Athletes who missed the September 15 registration deadline or failed technical assessments cannot participate. Furthermore, players subject to active disciplinary suspensions, medical disqualifications, anti doping violations, or unresolved employer clearance restrictions are barred from competition.

Schedule, Venue, and Tournament Format

The inaugural eleven-day season will take place from November 1 to November 11, 2026, at the Ekana International Indoor Stadium in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. Public ticket pricing starts accessibly at 99 rupees to encourage broad community attendance.

The competition employs a single-table round robin format during the preliminary stage, where each franchise plays every rival once. The top four teams in the standings then advance to single elimination semifinals, with the surviving contenders meeting in the championship final on November 11 to determine the inaugural champion.

Context and Long-Term Significance

The Women's Pro Volleyball League marks a major structural leap for women in Indian Olympic sports. Female volleyball players previously operated without the high profile domestic visibility or financial compensation seen in franchise cricket or men's volleyball leagues. By pairing private capital, international talent, modern indoor facilities, and guaranteed remuneration, the league establishes an enduring development pathway to inspire young athletes and elevate Indian women's volleyball internationally.
