Yashas Palaksha Headlines Last Day of Sprinting and Middle-Distance Drama at Federation Cup 2026

Day 4 of the Federation Cup 2026 in Ranchi delivered one of the strongest evenings of hurdles competition in recent Indian athletics, highlighted by a brilliant men’s 400m hurdles final where three athletes breached the Commonwealth Games qualification mark.
The standout performance came from Yashas Palaksha, who stormed to gold in the men’s 400m hurdles with a personal best timing of 49.00 seconds. In a race packed with quality and depth, Yashas held off strong competition from Santhosh, who also produced a personal best of 49.06s to finish second.
Even more significantly, both athletes, along with MP Jabir, managed to breach the Commonwealth Games qualification standard of 50.27s. For Indian athletics, the race represented a major breakthrough in one of the country’s rapidly improving track events.
The most encouraging aspect of the race was not just the winning time but the collective quality of the field. For years, India struggled to develop consistent depth in the men’s 400m hurdles. Now, multiple athletes are operating below major international qualification standards within the same domestic race.
Yashas’ victory reflected both technical improvement and composure under pressure. His hurdle rhythm remained controlled throughout the race, allowing him to maintain speed over the final straight where many hurdlers traditionally lose momentum.
Santhosh was equally impressive. The silver medallist stayed in contention throughout and pushed Yashas deep into the closing metres while also registering the best performance of his career.
Meanwhile, Jabir’s qualification-standard run added another layer of optimism for India’s relay and hurdles ecosystem ahead of the Commonwealth Games cycle.
Animesh Kujur Wins Men’s 200m But Falls Short of Expectations
Earlier in the evening, Animesh Kujur claimed gold in the men’s 200m final with a season-best timing of 20.64 seconds. The national record holder once again demonstrated his domestic dominance, but the performance still felt slightly underwhelming relative to expectations surrounding him. Coming into the Federation Cup, there was anticipation that Animesh could potentially challenge the Commonwealth Games qualification mark of 20.61s. He narrowly missed that standard by just 0.03 seconds.
More importantly, comparisons with his own national record of 20.3 placed the performance into perspective.
While 20.64 remains one of the fastest times in the country this season, Animesh himself has already established much higher standards. That naturally changes expectations around every race he runs domestically.
Still, the victory reaffirmed his position as India’s leading men’s 200m sprinter.
The women’s 200m heats also produced an intriguing storyline through Kusum Thakur of Himachal Pradesh. Kusum clocked 23.94 seconds to finish ahead of a competitive field and establish herself as a genuine dark horse heading into the final. The heats themselves were extremely close.
Tamanna of Haryana and Fatema Begam of Tripura both finished in 24.06s, while Sudeshna Hanma followed closely with 24.07s. The narrow margins highlighted the growing competitiveness within Indian women’s sprinting. For Kusum, however, the timing was particularly significant because it placed her ahead of several more established names entering the competition.
Perhaps the most dramatic race of the evening came in the men’s 800m final. Krishan Kumar delivered a sensational finishing burst over the final stretch to surge from sixth position to first and claim gold in 1:47.68. The race appeared to be slipping away from him entering the final bend. But Krishan produced one of the strongest closing sprints seen at the championships, overtaking multiple athletes in the final metres.
The performance underlined both tactical patience and finishing strength qualities essential in championship 800m racing.
Unlike paced time trials, domestic championship finals often become tactical and position-oriented. Krishan handled those dynamics perfectly, conserving energy before unleashing his decisive final sprint.
In the women’s 800m final, Pooja secured victory with a timing of 2:02.42. Huirem Bhumeshwor and Thota Sankeertana completed the podium in 2:05.56 and 2:05.74 respectively. However, the Commonwealth Games qualification mark of 1:57.88 remained well out of reach, reflecting the gap Indian women’s middle-distance running still needs to close internationally.
Overall, Day 4 of the Federation Cup showcased both the progress and the remaining challenges within Indian athletics. The men’s 400m hurdles emerged as the biggest positive with three athletes breaching the CWG standard, while Animesh Kujur’s win reaffirmed his status despite narrowly missing qualification.
At the same time, performances from emerging names like Kusum Thakur and Krishan Kumar added fresh storylines to a championship increasingly defined by rising domestic depth across events.
