Abhinandh PB Extends Unbeaten Run as Dempo Goa Challengers Edge Kolkata in UTT Season 7 Thriller

While reigning MVP Bernadette Szocs produced the decisive finish to seal victory, it was another composed performance from young Indian paddler Abhinandh PB that once again underlined why he has emerged as one of the breakout stars of Butterfly Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT) Season 7.
The teenage sensation extended his unbeaten run in the league with another commanding display, helping Dempo Goa Challengers edge HVR Kolkata ThunderBlades 8-7 in a thrilling contest at the Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Indoor Stadium in Goa on Monday.
With the tie swinging repeatedly throughout the evening, Abhinandh's victory over fellow rising Indian star Ankur Bhattacharjee proved pivotal before Szocs held her nerve in a dramatic deciding match against Singapore's Zeng Jian to preserve Goa's perfect start to the season.
The defending champions have now won all three of their matches and continue to establish themselves as early favourites for the UTT Season 7 title.
Although international stars featured throughout the evening, the contest also highlighted the growing strength of Indian table tennis. One of the most anticipated matches of the tie saw two of India's brightest youngsters, Abhinandh PB and Ankur Bhattacharjee, face each other in a battle that could shape the outcome of the contest.
Both players have impressed during the opening week of the tournament, consistently delivering mature performances against experienced opposition. Once again, Abhinandh demonstrated why he has become one of Goa's most valuable players.
With the tie delicately poised, the youngster played fearless attacking table tennis, dictating rallies with confidence and forcing Ankur onto the defensive. He comfortably claimed the opening two games 11-8, 11-8, sealing the victory before Ankur managed to take the third game after the outcome had already been decided under UTT's scoring format.
The victory restored Goa's lead and shifted the momentum firmly back towards the defending champions. For his outstanding contribution, Abhinandh was deservedly named the ChatGPT Match IQ Player of the Tie.
Abhinandh's Confidence Continues to Grow
The latest victory adds another impressive chapter to what has been a remarkable debut season for the youngster. Earlier in the competition, Abhinandh had already announced himself with an important victory over Payas Jain during Goa's win against Ahmedabad APL Pipers. Against Kolkata, he produced another composed display under pressure.
Perhaps most impressive has been the maturity with which he has approached each match. Rather than being overwhelmed by the occasion or the calibre of his opponents, Abhinandh has consistently trusted his attacking instincts, showing excellent control during crucial points.
His ability to deliver when the tie is on the line has become one of Goa's biggest strengths.
At just the start of his UTT journey, Abhinandh is rapidly establishing himself as one of India's most exciting emerging paddlers.
The tie itself proved to be one of the closest contests of the season. Spain's Alvaro Robles handed Goa the early advantage after recovering from the disappointment of losing the second game to defeat Romania's Eduard Ionescu 2-1. Robles finished in spectacular fashion, winning the deciding game 11-0, one of the most dominant individual games seen this season.
Kolkata responded immediately through Ayhika Mukherjee, who halted the momentum generated by Goa's teenage sensation Syndrela Das. Fresh from her stunning victory over Manika Batra a day earlier, Syndrela found Ayhika in inspired form as the Kolkata paddler claimed a 2-1 victory.
Ayhika then combined with Ankur Bhattacharjee to win the mixed doubles against Robles and Syndrela, giving the ThunderBlades a narrow 5-4 advantage heading into the final two matches. With Goa trailing, the responsibility fell on Abhinandh.
The youngster responded magnificently. His victory over Ankur not only levelled the overall contest but also restored belief inside the Goa camp ahead of the decisive women's singles.
Throughout the match, Abhinandh displayed impressive tactical awareness, mixing aggressive forehand attacks with excellent placement to keep Ankur under constant pressure. His consistency across the opening two games ensured Goa entered the final match with momentum firmly on their side.
The evening concluded with a blockbuster clash between reigning UTT MVP Bernadette Szocs and Singapore's Zeng Jian. With the overall tie locked at 7-7, every point suddenly carried enormous significance. Zeng struck first by taking the opening game, placing Kolkata within touching distance of victory.
However, Szocs once again showcased the quality that has made her one of the league's biggest stars. The Romanian fought back to claim the second game before producing a composed display in the decider. Despite several missed opportunities, Szocs remained patient and finally converted her fourth match point, sealing the final game 11-9 with a blistering topspin winner that sparked celebrations among the Goa players.
Her victory completed an 8-7 triumph and maintained Dempo Goa Challengers' unbeaten record.
While Szocs and Robles continue to provide invaluable experience, one of the biggest positives for Goa has been the emergence of young Indian players. Syndrela Das has already grabbed headlines this season with her stunning victory over Manika Batra. Now, Abhinandh PB is matching that impact with a series of composed performances against some of India's finest young paddlers.
Together, the pair represent the future of Indian table tennis while already contributing significantly to one of the strongest teams in the competition.
The success of youngsters like Abhinandh and Syndrela also reflects Ultimate Table Tennis' broader objective of providing India's next generation with an opportunity to compete alongside and against world-class international players.
Three matches into the season, Dempo Goa Challengers remain unbeaten and continue to strengthen their credentials as genuine title contenders. Their latest victory once again highlighted the balance within the squad. Experienced internationals continue to deliver when required, but it is the fearless performances of youngsters like Abhinandh PB that have provided the team with an added dimension.
With confidence growing after another impressive display, Abhinandh now looks set to become one of the defining stories of Butterfly UTT Season 7.
Goa will hope their young Indian star can maintain his unbeaten run when the competition resumes, while Ahmedabad APL Pipers prepare to face UP Prometheans in Tuesday's next league fixture.
