Ahmedabad APL Pipers Go Top After Dominant 10-5 Victory Over PBG Pune Jaguars in UTT Season 7

Ahmedabad APL Pipers climbed to the top of the Butterfly Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT) Season 7 standings with an impressive 10-5 victory over PBG Pune Jaguars on Saturday, thanks to standout performances from Manika Batra and Sofia Polcanova.
The Pipers produced a clinical team display at the EKA Arena in Goa, winning four of the five ties to secure a crucial result in the race for the playoffs. While Sofia Polcanova laid the foundation with two vital victories, Manika Batra wrapped up the contest in emphatic fashion with a commanding straight-games win over French paddler Prithika Pavade.
The victory takes Ahmedabad to the summit of the league table at a crucial stage of the competition and further establishes them as one of the title favourites in Season 7.
Staged under the aegis of the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) and promoted by Niraj Bajaj and Vita Dani, Butterfly UTT Season 7 features 42 players, including 14 Olympians, making it one of the strongest editions of India's premier franchise table tennis league.
Ahmedabad got off to an ideal start through Belgian paddler Adrien Rassenfosse, who inflicted Snehit Suravajjula's first singles defeat of the season. Rassenfosse looked in complete control during the opening two games, using his aggressive forehand play and sharp returns to dominate proceedings. Although Snehit fought back by taking the third game, the Belgian had already done enough to hand Ahmedabad an early advantage with a 2-1 victory.
Breaking Snehit's unbeaten singles record gave Ahmedabad the momentum they needed against one of the league's strongest teams.
The second match of the tie produced one of the most entertaining contests of the evening as Sofia Polcanova faced India's rising star Diya Chitale for the first time. Diya made an excellent start, claiming the opening game and putting the Austrian under immediate pressure.
However, Polcanova's experience shone through in the decisive moments. She edged both the second and third games on Golden Point, displaying remarkable composure under pressure to complete a 2-1 comeback victory and double Ahmedabad's lead.
Her ability to win the crucial points proved decisive and highlighted why she remains one of the league's most dependable international stars.
Ahmedabad continued its dominance in the mixed doubles encounter. The pairing of Payas Jain and Sofia Polcanova recovered strongly after losing the opening game against Anirban Ghosh and Prithika Pavade. The Ahmedabad duo quickly found their rhythm, combining solid serves with effective placement to take the next two games comfortably and extend the overall lead.
For Polcanova, it was her second victory of the tie, underlining her immense contribution to Ahmedabad's success.
PBG Pune Jaguars finally responded through Egyptian star Omar Assar, who produced an entertaining performance against Payas Jain. After comfortably winning the opening game, Assar allowed Payas back into the contest as the young Indian levelled the match by taking the second game. The deciding game remained evenly poised until the closing stages before Assar held his nerve to secure a 2-1 victory, keeping Pune's hopes alive heading into the final singles contest.
Although the Jaguars reduced the deficit, they still required a flawless finish to stand any chance of staging a comeback.
Any hopes of a dramatic turnaround were quickly extinguished by Manika Batra. India's highest-ranked women's player produced one of her most composed performances of the season against Prithika Pavade, controlling the rallies from the outset. Manika's experience, variation and tactical awareness proved too much for the French international, as she won 11-8, 11-7, 11-8 to complete a commanding 3-0 victory.
The straight-games triumph sealed Ahmedabad's 10-5 win, ensuring there would be no late comeback from Pune. It was another timely reminder of Manika's ability to deliver under pressure and lead her team when it matters most.
Ahmedabad's standout performers were recognised during the post-match presentations. Sofia Polcanova was named both the ChatGPT Match IQ Player and the Foreign Player of the Tie after contributing two victories, including the crucial comeback against Diya Chitale. Manika Batra received the Indian Player of the Tie award following her match-winning performance, while Prithika Pavade claimed the Bisleri Shot of the Tie honour for one of the standout rallies of the contest.
Earlier in the day, the Dream UTT Juniors competition also reached an important milestone with the completion of the semi-finals. Dabang Delhi TTC defeated Dempo Goa Challengers 5-2, while U Mumba TT overcame UP Prometheans 5-1 to book their places in Sunday's final. The junior competition continues to serve as an important platform for nurturing India's next generation of table tennis talent alongside the professional league.
With this victory, Ahmedabad APL Pipers move to the top of the standings and strengthen their position in the race for the knockout stages.
The team's success was built on collective effort, with Adrien Rassenfosse, Sofia Polcanova, Payas Jain and Manika Batra all making valuable contributions across the five matches.
For PBG Pune Jaguars, the defeat represents a setback but also highlights the fine margins in a league where every game can influence the final standings.
The action continues later on Saturday with U Mumba TT taking on UP Prometheans, another fixture that could significantly shape the playoff picture as Butterfly UTT Season 7 enters its decisive phase.
