Dempo Goa Challengers Equal Biggest UTT Win as Ayhika Mukherjee Leads Kolkata to Crucial Victory

The race for the Butterfly Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT) Season 7 playoffs gathered further momentum on Friday as Dempo Goa Challengers delivered a statement performance to dismantle Dabang Delhi TTC 12-3, while HVR Kolkata ThunderBlades secured a vital 9-6 victory over Ahmedabad APL Pipers thanks to a standout display from Ayhika Mukherjee.
Goa's emphatic triumph equalled the largest margin of victory in the five-match format in UTT history and further strengthened their position at the top of the standings. Earlier in the day, Kolkata bounced back from an early deficit to register only their second win of the season, keeping their playoff aspirations alive. With the league entering its decisive phase, Friday's results highlighted both Goa's championship credentials and Kolkata's determination to remain in the hunt for the knockout stages.
The two-time champions were in complete control from the opening match against Dabang Delhi TTC. Spanish paddler Alvaro Robles set the tone with an impressive straight-games victory over India's Sathiyan Gnanasekaran, winning 11-6, 11-6, 11-9. Robles' aggressive play immediately handed Goa the initiative, and the momentum never shifted thereafter.
Teenager Syndrela Das followed with another important victory, edging fellow Indian youngster Divyanshi Bhowmick in an entertaining contest between two of the country's brightest emerging talents. After taking the opening game 11-9, Syndrela dropped the second on Golden Point before responding strongly to claim the decider 11-4.
The mixed doubles contest further demonstrated Goa's superiority.
Robles and Syndrela combined brilliantly to overpower Sathiyan and Maria Xiao, taking the first two games before Delhi managed to salvage the final game. The result also handed the Delhi pairing their second consecutive mixed doubles defeat.
Abhinandh Extends Unbeaten Run
One of the standout performers of the season, Abhinandh P.B., continued his remarkable unbeaten streak with another commanding performance. Facing Egypt's Youssef Abdelaziz, the young Indian controlled the contest from start to finish, winning 11-4, 11-10, 11-8. Abhinandh's consistency has become one of Goa's biggest strengths this season, with the youngster repeatedly delivering points in crucial ties.
He was rewarded for another outstanding display by being named the ChatGPT Match IQ Player of the Tie, Indian Player of the Tie, and also claimed the Bisleri Shot of the Tie award. Reigning UTT MVP Bernadette Szocs completed Goa's demolition by defeating Maria Xiao 2-1, ensuring the Challengers finished with a dominant 12-3 scoreline.
Robles, meanwhile, was recognised as the Foreign Player of the Tie. The victory not only reinforced Goa's status as title favourites but also underlined the depth available within their squad, with every player contributing to the comprehensive result.
Earlier in the day, HVR Kolkata ThunderBlades produced an impressive comeback to defeat Ahmedabad APL Pipers 9-6. Ahmedabad had made the stronger start.
Belgium's Adrien Rassenfosse edged Ankur Bhattacharjee in a dramatic three-game contest, winning both the second and third games on Golden Point. Indian star Manika Batra then extended Ahmedabad's advantage after overcoming Zeng Jian in another closely fought encounter. Trailing early, Kolkata responded in style.
The pairing of Ankur Bhattacharjee and Ayhika Mukherjee proved decisive in the mixed doubles, defeating Payas Jain and Sofia Polcanova to swing momentum back in Kolkata's favour. Romania's Eduard Ionescu then levelled the tie with an authoritative straight-games victory over Payas Jain, setting up the decisive women's singles encounter.
Ayhika Ends Polcanova's Unbeaten Run
The final match of the tie produced one of the biggest upsets of the season. Facing Sofia Polcanova, who had been unbeaten throughout the campaign, Ayhika lost the opening game before producing a remarkable comeback. The Indian adjusted her tactics brilliantly, becoming more aggressive in the rallies while reducing unforced errors.
She claimed the next two games, 11-8 and 11-3, handing Polcanova her first defeat of Butterfly UTT Season 7 and sealing Kolkata's crucial victory. The result could prove significant in the playoff race, with Kolkata now gaining valuable momentum heading into the final phase of the league. Ionescu was named both the ChatGPT Match IQ Player and Foreign Player of the Tie, while Ayhika received the Indian Player of the Tie award for her match-winning performance.
Manika Batra claimed the Bisleri Shot of the Tie.
The day also brought clarity in the Dream UTT Juniors competition. Dabang Delhi TTC defeated PBG Pune Jaguars 6-3, securing their place in the semifinals.
The victory confirmed the final four teams, with Dabang Delhi TTC, UP Prometheans, U Mumba TT, and Dempo Goa Challengers advancing to the knockout stage. The grassroots tournament continues to provide valuable exposure to India's next generation of table tennis talent alongside the main UTT competition.
As the league approaches its business end, every tie is becoming increasingly significant. Goa's emphatic victory further cements their position at the top of the standings and reinforces their credentials as one of the strongest contenders for the Season 7 title. For Kolkata, the victory over Ahmedabad keeps their playoff hopes alive while demonstrating their ability to recover under pressure.
Saturday's action promises another exciting double-header as Ahmedabad APL Pipers face PBG Pune Jaguars, while UP Prometheans take on U Mumba TT in two fixtures that could have a major impact on the playoff picture.
With several teams still battling for qualification and Goa continuing to set the pace at the top, Butterfly UTT Season 7 is building towards an exciting finish.
