Anirban Lahiri Delivers Strong Finish with T9 at LIV Golf South Africa

Anirban Lahiri Delivers Strong Finish with T9 at LIV Golf South Africa

Indian golf’s flagbearer Anirban Lahiri produced one of his most complete performances in recent times, finishing tied ninth at the LIV Golf South Africa event with an impressive 20-under-par total.

The standout feature of his campaign was a remarkable weekend surge, where he carded back-to-back rounds of 63 (-8), underlining both his consistency and ability to peak under pressure. At a tournament that featured some of the biggest names in world golf, Lahiri’s performance was not just about a top-10 finish it was a statement of resurgence.

A Weekend Surge That Defined the Tournament

Lahiri’s campaign at The Club at Steyn City in Johannesburg was built on steady foundations before exploding into life over the final two rounds. After opening with two rounds of 69, the Indian was placed well outside contention, trailing the leaders by a significant margin.

However, what followed was a clinical demonstration of elite-level golf. Across the third and fourth rounds, Lahiri was virtually flawless. His twin rounds of 63 were described as “spotless,” meaning he went bogey-free across both days—a rare feat in professional golf, especially in a field stacked with major champions and elite competitors.

This late surge saw him climb rapidly up the leaderboard, eventually securing a tied ninth finish at 20-under—one of the strongest finishes of his LIV Golf career.

The Johannesburg venue posed a unique challenge due to its high-altitude conditions. Situated over 1,500 metres above sea level, the thinner air allows the ball to travel significantly farther, demanding precise recalibration of distance control. For a player like Lahiri, whose game is built on precision rather than brute power, adapting to these conditions was crucial. He managed this exceptionally well, particularly over the weekend, where his approach play stood out.

His ability to control trajectory and land the ball softly on firm greens became a defining factor in his scoring. The high-altitude advantage also allowed him to attack par-5s more aggressively, turning potential birdie opportunities into routine scoring chances.

Short Game and Putting: The Difference Makers

While his ball-striking was sharp, it was Lahiri’s short game and putting that elevated his performance. Statistically, Lahiri has always been one of the stronger putters on tour, and that was evident in South Africa. Over the final two rounds, he converted multiple mid-to-long range birdie putts, maintaining momentum and keeping pressure on the leaders.

Equally important was his scrambling. The course’s Kikuyu grass known for its thick and unpredictable lies poses a challenge even for seasoned professionals. Lahiri’s ability to recover from difficult positions and save par ensured that his scorecard remained clean.

The combination of high greens-in-regulation percentage and efficient putting created the perfect scoring formula.

Coming into the South Africa event, Lahiri’s 2026 season had been inconsistent. While there were flashes of quality, he struggled to put together four strong rounds in a single tournament. This T9 finish changes that narrative.

More importantly, it comes at a critical time in the LIV Golf season. Lahiri narrowly missed out on the “Lock Zone” (top 24 in standings) last year, which guarantees automatic retention for the following season. Performances like this not only boost his ranking but also strengthen his case for long-term stability in the league.

The 20-under finish will provide valuable points and momentum heading into the next stretch of tournaments.Lahiri continues to play a key role for Crushers GC, captained by Bryson DeChambeau. Within the team setup, Lahiri is often seen as the “anchor” a player who provides consistency and stability rather than explosive scoring every round.

In South Africa, however, he combined both roles. His weekend performance complemented the aggressive style of players like DeChambeau, ensuring that the team remained competitive in the standings. The synergy within Crushers GC, built on continuity and trust, has been one of their biggest strengths and Lahiri’s performance was central to that dynamic.

Beyond the leaderboard, Lahiri’s performance carries significance for Indian golf as a whole.

As one of the few Indian players competing regularly at the highest level globally, Lahiri continues to set benchmarks. His ability to compete and thrive against world-class fields reinforces India’s growing presence in international golf. For younger Indian golfers, performances like these serve as both inspiration and proof of what is possible with the right mix of skill, discipline, and exposure.

The immediate challenge for Lahiri will be maintaining this level of consistency. His weekend form in South Africa demonstrated that he has the tools to compete with the very best.

The key now is translating that into sustained performances across tournaments. With upcoming events in different conditions, including high-altitude venues like Mexico City, Lahiri’s experience in South Africa could prove invaluable. His understanding of ball-flight adjustments and course management in such environments gives him a strategic edge.

Anirban Lahiri’s tied ninth finish at LIV Golf South Africa was more than just a solid result it was a performance built on precision, adaptability, and mental resilience. Two flawless rounds of 63, a 20-under total, and a strong climb up the leaderboard highlight a player rediscovering his rhythm at the highest level.

As the 2026 season progresses, this could well be the turning point that defines Lahiri’s campaign both in terms of results and his standing within global golf.
