Gurkirat Singh scored a 90th-minute equaliser as Punjab FC drew 1-1 with Mumbai City FC in ISL 2026-27. Leandro Otormin had opened the scoring from the penalty spot.

Punjab FC salvaged a point against Mumbai City FC with a dramatic 90th-minute equaliser from Gurkirat Singh in their 1-1 draw in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2026-27 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi on Monday, October 19.

Leandro Otormin had given Mumbai City the lead from the penalty spot in the 63rd minute, but Gurkirat, who previously represented the Islanders, struck late to deny the visitors all three points.

The result reflected a closely contested encounter in which both sides had opportunities to take control but struggled to convert their chances. Punjab’s aggressive pressing created problems for Mumbai City in the opening period, while the Islanders improved after the interval and appeared on course for victory before the hosts found their breakthrough.

Punjab FC began with high intensity, pressing Mumbai City and looking to capitalise on quick transitions. The hosts created the first opportunity in the fourth minute when Rishikanta Meitei unleashed a right-footed effort from distance. Mumbai City goalkeeper TP Rehenesh reacted well to push the shot away.

The Islanders attempted to counter Punjab’s pressure by spreading play towards the wings and exploiting opportunities on the break. However, the physical nature of the contest made it difficult for either side to establish sustained control.

Mumbai City were forced into an early substitution after Vikram Partap Singh sustained an injury following a tackle involving Rishikanta Meitei. Farukh Chaudhary came on in his place, forcing the visitors to adjust their attacking setup.

Brandon Fernandes came close to opening the scoring soon afterwards, but Punjab goalkeeper Arshdeep Singh intervened with an important save after rushing off his line.

Punjab also made an adjustment before the break, with Bishu Singh replacing Meitei in the 36th minute. The hosts continued to search for an opening and nearly found one in stoppage time. Khaiminthang Lhungdim struck a left-footed effort from distance, but the ball bounced off the angle of the woodwork.

The chance was Punjab’s closest attempt to break the deadlock in the first half. Both teams went into the interval level at 0-0, with neither able to make its opportunities count.

Otormin Gives Mumbai City the Lead

Mumbai City emerged with greater attacking intent after half-time. Valpuia delivered a cross that found Farukh Chaudhary, but the forward could not make the necessary connection with his header. Punjab introduced Gurkirat Singh for Vishal Yadav ten minutes into the second half, looking for a change in their attacking approach. However, it was Mumbai City who struck first.

The decisive moment arrived just past the hour mark when Bijoy Varghese stepped on PN Noufal’s ankle inside the penalty area. The referee awarded Mumbai City a penalty, handing the visitors an opportunity to take the lead.

Uruguayan striker Leandro Otormin stepped up and converted confidently from 12 yards. His powerful effort beat Arshdeep Singh, putting Mumbai City 1-0 ahead in the 63rd minute. With the Islanders in front, head coach Manolo Marquez made a double substitution four minutes later. Tluanga replaced Brandon Fernandes, while Wilmar Jordan came on for Otormin.

Punjab responded with changes of their own, introducing Sanathoi Meitei and Arshvir Singh for Muhammad Suhail and Diego Raposo. The substitutions were intended to give the hosts fresh impetus as they searched for an equaliser.

Punjab’s changes soon delivered the desired result. Sanathoi Meitei produced an accurate cross from the left, sending the ball into a dangerous area inside the penalty box. Gurkirat Singh found space in the box and rose above the defence to direct his header into the net in the 90th minute. The goal brought Punjab level at 1-1 and sparked relief for the home side, who had faced the prospect of a narrow defeat.

The equaliser was particularly significant for Gurkirat, who had previously played for Mumbai City FC. Having entered the match as a second-half substitute, he made an immediate impact at a crucial stage, scoring his first goal for Punjab FC.

His late intervention also ensured that the hosts were rewarded for continuing to push forward after falling behind. Mumbai City, meanwhile, were left frustrated after coming within minutes of securing the victory.

The 1-1 draw gave both sides a point from a match that featured strong goalkeeping, a penalty, a woodwork effort and a decisive late header. Mumbai City had taken the lead through Otormin’s second-half penalty, but Punjab’s persistence ultimately earned them a share of the points.

For Punjab, Gurkirat’s first goal for the club provided a timely boost and underlined the impact that substitutions can have late in a closely fought contest. For Mumbai City, the failure to protect their advantage until the final whistle will be a disappointment after Otormin’s successful penalty had put them in a favourable position.

The match in New Delhi ended with the teams unable to be separated, as Punjab FC and Mumbai City FC settled for a 1-1 draw in their ISL 2026-27 encounter.
