The Indian Women’s League (IWL) will kick off its 2026-27 season on November 13, with eight clubs set to compete for the country’s premier women’s club football title across Kolkata, Jamshedpur and Bengaluru.

The new campaign will feature defending champions East Bengal FC alongside established contenders and two promoted teams, as Indian women’s football prepares for another season of domestic competition.

The upcoming edition represents an important phase in the league’s development, with the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and Capri Sports working together following their landmark 15-year partnership for the commercial development and marketing rights of the IWL and IWL 2.

With a mix of experienced clubs, emerging teams and established individual performers, the 2026-27 season will offer players another opportunity to compete at the highest level of domestic women’s club football.

Six clubs from the previous season will return for the 2026-27 campaign: East Bengal FC, Sethu FC, Kickstart FC, Nita Football Academy, Gokulam Kerala FC and Garhwal United FC. They will be joined by HOPS FC and Juba Sangha FC, who secured promotion from IWL 2 after finishing first and second, respectively, in the 2025-26 season. Their arrival adds two new competitors to the top-tier lineup and reflects the role of the second division in providing a pathway for clubs to progress through the domestic structure.

The eight-team competition will be staged across Kolkata, Jamshedpur and Bengaluru. The announcement confirms the November 13 start date and the three host cities, although the complete fixture list and individual match schedules have not yet been detailed.

For the promoted clubs, the season will provide an opportunity to test themselves against established teams and demonstrate their ability to compete at the highest level of Indian women’s club football.

East Bengal FC will enter the new season as defending champions after an impressive 2025-26 campaign. The Kolkata-based club recorded 13 wins and just one defeat, establishing themselves as the team to beat heading into the new edition.

Their success was complemented by outstanding individual performances, led by Fazila Ikwaput. The East Bengal forward finished as the league’s leading scorer with 20 goals, making her one of the most influential attacking players of the previous season.

Nita Football Academy’s Pyari Xaxa and Sethu FC’s Lynda Kom were also among the notable attacking performers, underlining the depth of talent across the competition.

East Bengal will now look to carry that momentum into the 2026-27 season, but the challenge of defending their crown will involve navigating a fresh campaign against seven rivals. The returning clubs will be looking to close the gap, while the promoted sides will aim to make an immediate impression.

The presence of established names and newly promoted teams should provide a varied competitive landscape, although the final balance of the title race will become clearer once the fixtures begin.

Capri Sports Begins Its IWL Partnership

The new season will also mark Capri Sports’ entry into the league’s commercial development and marketing framework following its 15-year partnership with the AIFF covering both the IWL and IWL 2. Apurv Gupta, Head of Contact Sports at Capri Sports, described the 2026-27 campaign as an important milestone for the organisation. He said the company sees considerable potential in the league and the players competing across the country.

“Our focus will be on building a stronger platform for women footballers, enhancing the league’s visibility and creating an environment where clubs and players can thrive,” Gupta said.

He added that Capri Sports looked forward to contributing to the long-term growth of women’s club football in India. The partnership provides a long-term framework for commercial development and marketing. Its stated objectives include improving the league’s visibility and strengthening the platform available to clubs and players. How these ambitions translate into tangible changes for the competition will be an important aspect to follow over the coming seasons.

M. Satyanarayan, Deputy Secretary General of the AIFF, reiterated the league’s importance in developing women’s football in India. “The Indian Women’s League remains a cornerstone of the development of women’s football in India,” he said, adding that players would be looking to make their mark on the national stage during the upcoming campaign.

Satyanarayan also highlighted the role of IWL 2 in enabling clubs and players to progress through the domestic structure. The promotion of HOPS FC and Juba Sangha FC into the top division provides a direct example of that pathway in operation.

The relationship between the two competitions is significant because opportunities for clubs to move up the domestic pyramid can help broaden participation and create additional routes for emerging players.

With the season beginning on November 13, attention will turn to whether East Bengal can maintain their dominance, which returning clubs can challenge for the title and how the promoted teams adapt to the demands of the top division.

The involvement of Capri Sports also introduces a new chapter in the league’s commercial development, with a long-term partnership intended to strengthen visibility and support the competition’s growth.

For India’s women footballers, the 2026-27 IWL season will provide another platform to compete, develop and attract attention through domestic performances. With eight clubs scheduled to compete across Kolkata, Jamshedpur and Bengaluru, the campaign promises a fresh contest for the national title and another step in the continuing development of women’s club football in India.
