Sreenidi Deccan FC have named Spanish tactician Antonio Rueda as their new head coach ahead of the 2026-27 Indian Football League (IFL) season.

The 45-year-old replaces Carlos Vaz Pinto as the Hyderabad-based club looks to rebuild following a disappointing campaign and re-establish itself among the league's top contenders.

The appointment reflects Sreenidi Deccan's long-term vision of combining experienced leadership with a clear footballing philosophy. Rueda arrives with significant experience in Indian football, having previously managed Churchill Brothers and Gokulam Kerala FC, while also coaching several clubs across Spain and a stint in Andorra.

With the new IFL season scheduled to begin on October 16, Sreenidi Deccan will hope Rueda's familiarity with Indian football allows him to make an immediate impact.

Unlike many foreign coaches entering Indian football for the first time, Antonio Rueda already understands the unique challenges and opportunities the domestic game presents. His spells with Churchill Brothers and Gokulam Kerala FC gave him valuable exposure to Indian players, league structures and the competitive nature of club football in the country. Having worked closely with domestic talent, Rueda has developed an understanding of both grassroots development and senior-level football in India.

That experience could prove crucial as he begins work with a Sreenidi Deccan squad looking to return to the upper half of the league table.

Beyond India, Rueda has built an extensive coaching résumé across Europe. He guided AD Nervión to the Primera Andaluza title during the 2014-15 season and has also managed clubs including San Roque de Lepe, Mora CF, Olivenza FC and UD Fuente de Cantos in Spain.

During the 2023-24 season, he also took charge of Andorran side FC Ordino before returning to India to coach Gokulam Kerala FC in 2024.

Throughout his coaching career, Rueda has earned a reputation for implementing an attractive possession-based style of football. His preferred 4-4-2 formation focuses on building attacks patiently through central midfield while maintaining compact defensive organisation. Rather than relying on direct football, Rueda encourages short passing sequences designed to draw opponents out of position before exploiting spaces in advanced areas.

His teams typically look to dominate possession, control the tempo of matches and create numerical advantages through intelligent movement. Another defining feature of Rueda's coaching philosophy is his emphasis on winning the ball back quickly after losing possession. High pressing, coordinated defensive transitions and quick counter-attacks form key elements of his tactical setup.

He also values attacking width, encouraging full-backs and wide midfielders to combine effectively while creating opportunities through both open play and set-piece situations. This proactive approach earned praise during his tenure with Churchill Brothers and could provide Sreenidi Deccan with a more structured identity heading into the new campaign.

Founded in January 2015 in Visakhapatnam, Sreenidi Deccan FC initially focused on youth development through its Under-13, Under-15 and Under-18 programmes. The club's ambitions expanded significantly in 2020 when the All India Football Federation invited bids for new clubs to participate in the I-League. Sreenidi Deccan secured entry and made their debut during the 2021-22 season.

Since then, the club has steadily established itself as a competitive force in Indian football. In 2021, Sreenidi Deccan reached the final of the IFA Shield before finishing runners-up after losing to Real Kashmir FC. The following season proved even more encouraging as they finished second in the I-League standings, narrowly missing out on promotion.

The club also participated in the 2023 Indian Super Cup, where it delivered competitive performances despite failing to reach the knockout stages.

One of the club's most significant developments came in October 2023 when it announced a strategic partnership with Portuguese giants SL Benfica. The collaboration focuses on improving multiple aspects of football operations, including player nutrition, sports psychology, strength and conditioning, while also strengthening youth development pathways.

Sreenidi Deccan's modern training base, the Deccan Arena at the Sreenidi Football Villa in Aziznagar, Hyderabad, further reflects the club's commitment to creating a professional football environment.

Despite encouraging progress in previous years, the club endured a disappointing 2024-25 campaign, finishing ninth in the league with just 28 points. That performance highlighted the need for change, making the appointment of Antonio Rueda one of the club's most important decisions ahead of the new season. His immediate challenge will be to rebuild confidence within the squad, establish a consistent tactical identity and improve performances against the league's strongest teams.

Beyond short-term results, Rueda will also be expected to maximise the club's investment in youth development while integrating players capable of competing at the highest domestic level. For Sreenidi Deccan, success in the coming seasons carries additional significance. Hyderabad currently lacks representation in the Indian Super League, and the club harbours ambitions of eventually earning promotion to India's top division.

Achieving that objective will require consistency, tactical discipline and sustained improvement over the course of the season.

Antonio Rueda's previous experience in Indian football, combined with his possession-based coaching philosophy and proven ability to develop competitive teams, gives Sreenidi Deccan reason for optimism. While the task ahead is challenging, the Spaniard now has the opportunity to guide one of Indian football's ambitious clubs towards the next stage of its evolution.
