Asian Games 2026: India Begin Men’s Hockey Title Defence Against Indonesia, Eye Winning Start

The Indian men’s hockey team will begin its Asian Games 2026 campaign on Sunday, September 20, with a Pool A encounter against Indonesia at the Gifu Prefectural Green Stadium in Kakamigahara, Japan.

Led by captain Harmanpreet Singh, India enter the tournament as the defending Asian Games champions and will be aiming to make a strong start to their title defence. The match is scheduled for 11:30 AM IST. The opening fixture comes at an important moment for the Indian side. The team endured a disappointing campaign at the recent Men's Hockey World Cup, finishing eighth, and the Asian Games provide an opportunity to put that result behind them. 

India will also have a major prize at stake in Japan: the men's hockey gold medallist will secure direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. On paper, Indonesia represents a familiar opponent for India. The two teams have met only twice previously, with India winning both encounters emphatically. The aggregate score across those two matches stands at 33-0 in India's favour.

Their first meeting came at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, where India produced a commanding 17-0 victory. Six years later, the teams met again at the 2022 Asia Cup, with India recording an even more emphatic 16-0 win.

The head-to-head record therefore reads:

The previous encounters also featured several Indian players who made significant contributions to the scoreline. Dipsan Tirkey has scored five goals against Indonesia, while Mandeep Singh, Dilpreet Singh, SV Sunil and Simranjeet Singh have three each.

However, the Indian team will be conscious that the Asian Games represent a different challenge, with the pressure of defending the continental title and securing an Olympic qualification berth.

Harmanpreet Singh will once again captain the Indian side. The defender and drag-flick specialist will be central to India's defensive structure as well as its penalty-corner threat. The 20-member squad combines established international players with younger options. Experienced names such as Amit Rohidas and Manpreet Singh provide tournament experience, while Hardik Singh, Vivek Sagar Prasad and Raj Kumar Pal strengthen the midfield.

In attack, India have several options in Dilpreet Singh, Shilanand Lakra, Sukhjeet Singh, Mandeep Singh and Abhishek.

The goalkeeping duties will be shared by Mohith HS and Suraj Karkera. The defensive group also includes Jarmanpreet Singh, Jugraj Singh, Sanjay, Sumit and Yashdeep Siwach. 

While Indonesia are India's first opponents, the group stage will become progressively more demanding. India are placed in Pool A alongside Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Korea, Japan and Bangladesh. After Sunday's opener, they will face Sri Lanka on September 22, Korea on September 24, Japan on September 26 and Bangladesh on September 28. 

The match against Japan could be particularly significant, given that the hosts are also among the leading contenders in the group. Korea will provide another major test before the pool stage concludes.

The top teams will advance to the knockout phase, with the semifinals scheduled for October 1 and the bronze-medal and gold-medal matches on October 3.

Gold medal and Olympic qualification at stake

India's men's hockey team won the gold medal at the Hangzhou Asian Games in 2023, continuing its strong record at the continental event. This time, however, the tournament carries significance beyond the Asian Games medal table.

The men's hockey champions in Aichi-Nagoya will earn an automatic place at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. That makes every stage of India's campaign important, even if the opening match against Indonesia appears one-sided on paper. 

For Harmanpreet Singh and his teammates, the immediate objective will be straightforward: begin the campaign with three points, build momentum and establish the rhythm required for the tougher matches ahead.

With a 33-0 aggregate record against Indonesia, India have dominated this fixture historically. The challenge now is to translate that superiority into another controlled performance while keeping the larger objective firmly in sight — defending the Asian Games crown and securing India's place at LA 2028.
