The stage is set for another exciting edition of Ultimate Table Tennis as Butterfly UTT Season 7 gets underway on July 9 at the Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Indoor Stadium in Goa. The opening fixture promises fireworks, with hosts and two-time champions Dempo Goa Challengers taking on defending champions U Mumba TT in a blockbuster western derby.

Over the next 18 days, seven franchises will battle for the coveted title, with the grand finale scheduled for July 26. Featuring world-class international stars, India's leading paddlers, and several emerging youngsters, Season 7 is expected to further elevate the standard of professional table tennis in the country.

Beyond the race for the championship, this year's competition carries additional significance for Indian players as it serves as the final major domestic event before the national team departs for the Asian Games in Japan.

The timing of Butterfly UTT Season 7 makes it particularly valuable for India's top paddlers. With the league concluding just days before the Asian Games, players will have the opportunity to compete in high-pressure situations against elite international opponents, providing ideal preparation ahead of one of the biggest events on the calendar.

PBG Pune Jaguars' star Diya Chitale believes the league offers experiences that are difficult to replicate elsewhere.

"Every season, I learn something new. The league also brings a different kind of pressure. When it's 6-6, and you know those last four or five points can decide the outcome, it's a situation we don't often experience elsewhere. Playing in those moments has really helped me develop as a player, and I think it's excellent preparation ahead of the Asian Games."

Her remarks underline one of UTT's biggest strengths creating pressure-filled situations where India's young players compete alongside and against some of the world's best.

One of the biggest stories heading into the new season is the return of reigning league MVP Bernadette Szocs, who switches allegiance from defending champions U Mumba TT to Dempo Goa Challengers following this year's auction.

The Romanian star played a key role in guiding U Mumba to the title last season and now finds herself leading Goa's title challenge in front of the home crowd.

Speaking ahead of the tournament, Szocs expressed her excitement about returning to the league.

"I'm always very happy to come back to UTT every year. The league keeps growing with each season, and every year it becomes even better. Last season, winning the title was something truly amazing. I'm delighted to be back again and to be part of this league once more."

Her presence immediately strengthens Goa's title ambitions and adds extra intrigue to the tournament opener against her former team.

Defending champions U Mumba TT will begin their title defence with another major addition to their squad.

India's leading men's paddler Manush Shah, currently ranked World No. 3 in men's doubles, joins the Mumbai franchise after an outstanding international season.

Looking ahead to his first UTT campaign with U Mumba, Shah said he is excited about the challenge.

"It's a special moment for me to be part of such a wonderful franchise. The transition between playing alongside and against your regular partners can sometimes be tricky, but there's always plenty of friendly banter among teammates and fellow Indian players. I'm looking forward to a great season and hope U Mumba TT can successfully defend the title."

One of the league's most anticipated fixtures could see Shah face his regular doubles partner Manav Thakkar, who will represent UP Prometheans this season. The duo has enjoyed tremendous success together internationally, making any meeting between them one of the marquee contests of the tournament.

Reflecting on the possibility, Thakkar said:

"Manush and I have been doing really well in doubles, and we're currently ranked World No. 3, so facing him will definitely be tough. Hopefully, this week helps us build momentum, and we can go on to win a medal for the country."

Butterfly UTT has steadily evolved into more than just a professional league. It has become one of the country's most important platforms for nurturing young talent through initiatives such as Dream UTT Juniors, which will once again run alongside the main competition.

Among the brightest young names this season is Divyanshi Bhowmick, who became the youngest player in UTT history after being drafted by Dabang Delhi TTC.

The 15-year-old, who was the Girls MVP in last year's Dream UTT Juniors, described the opportunity as a valuable learning experience.

"I'm really happy to have been selected for UTT and to be part of such a great team alongside so many top senior players. I've been practising with them over the last two days, and it's been a wonderful learning experience."

For emerging Indian players, sharing dressing rooms with Olympians and international stars continues to be one of the league's greatest strengths. Season 7 will feature 42 players, including 14 Olympians, further reinforcing UTT's reputation as one of the strongest franchise table tennis leagues outside Europe and China. Among the notable international returns is Austrian Olympian Sofia Polcanova, who returns to the league after featuring in Season 2.

Representing Ahmedabad APL Pipers, Polcanova revealed she has closely followed UTT's growth over recent years.

"I followed the league on Instagram last season and saw how much it has grown. Bernadette and her team won the title, and it was great to watch. The league has attracted a lot more attention over the years and continues to grow. It's really nice to be back."

Her return further strengthens an already impressive international lineup.

Season 7 will also witness the introduction of the AI-powered Table Tennis Review (TTR) system, making Butterfly UTT one of the few table tennis leagues globally to adopt video review technology. Developed by Gurugram-based Stupa Sports, the system is capable of reviewing contested decisions in under 20 seconds, with each team receiving three review opportunities during a tie.

HVR Kolkata ThunderBlades player Jeet Chandra believes the innovation will add another layer of excitement for fans.

"This season we're introducing the TTR system, and I think it'll be exciting for the fans. Every team will have three TTR reviews during a tie, so it'll be something new for Indian audiences to experience."

Title Race Begins in Goa

The league stage will see all seven franchises play each other once in a single round-robin format, with the top four progressing to the semifinals. The opening clash between Dempo Goa Challengers and U Mumba TT immediately sets the tone for what promises to be an intensely competitive season.

With established international stars, India's best players, exciting young talent, cutting-edge technology, and the added motivation of preparing for the Asian Games, Butterfly UTT Season 7 promises to deliver another memorable chapter in Indian table tennis. As the action begins in Goa, fans can expect 18 days of world-class competition that continues to strengthen India's premier franchise table tennis league.
