Tanvi Patri, Shaina Manimuthu and four other Indian shuttlers reach the singles round of 16 at the BWF World Junior Championships 2026 as doubles results remain mixed.

India’s boys and girls deliver a promising day in singles, while doubles results remain mixed at the World Junior Championships.

India’s young badminton contingent enjoyed an encouraging day at the BWF World Junior Championships 2026, with six singles players advancing to the round of 16 across the boys’ and girls’ competitions. Tanvi Patri and Shaina Manimuthu led the women’s singles charge with convincing straight-game victories, while Nishchal Chand also progressed without dropping a game. In the boys’ events, Jagsher Singh Khangurra, Tanvi Reddy Andluri and Dev Ruparelia survived testing three-game encounters to keep India’s challenge alive.

The doubles competitions produced mixed results, with Indian pairs recording victories in both boys’ and girls’ doubles but also suffering narrow defeats. The day ended on a disappointing note in mixed doubles, where Divyansh Agrawal and Varna Prabu Anand exited in the round of 64.

Tanvi Patri delivered one of India’s most assured performances in the singles events, defeating South Korea’s Han Bi Kim 15-9, 15-9 to book her place in the round of 16.

Patri controlled the match across both games, maintaining a consistent level and preventing her opponent from forcing a decider. The straight-game victory underlined her ability to handle the pressure of the knockout stages and keep her campaign on track.

Shaina Manimuthu was equally convincing against Hong Kong’s Hong Xuan Jiao. Continuing the form she had shown in the previous round, Shaina secured a 15-7, 15-6 win. The comfortable margin in both games reflected a strong performance from the Indian, who will now look to carry that momentum into the next stage.

In the boys’ singles competition, Nishchal Chand also advanced with a straight-game victory. He defeated Malaysia’s Kong Wei Xiang 15-9, 15-11, completing a composed performance to join his Indian teammates in the last 16.

These three results provided India with a strong foundation on a day when several other singles players had to dig deep to progress.

The route to the round of 16 was considerably more demanding for Jagsher Singh Khangurra, Tanvi Reddy Andluri and Dev Ruparelia, all of whom needed three games to secure their victories.

Khangurra overcame Thailand’s Punnatat Prempunpong 15-11, 10-15, 17-15 in a closely fought contest. After taking the opening game, the Indian lost the second and was forced to settle the match in a tense decider. He held his nerve to win 17-15, completing a hard-earned victory.

Tanvi Reddy Andluri produced another resilient performance against China’s Liu Si Ya. After losing the opening game 15-17, she responded by winning the next two games 15-13, 15-13. The narrow margins throughout the contest made her comeback particularly valuable, as she found a way to close out both games when the match was on the line.

Dev Ruparelia also progressed after defeating Indonesia’s Yudha Rendra Wijaya 16-14, 9-15, 15-10. The Indian edged a tight opening game before losing the second, but recovered in the decider to secure his place in the round of 16.

Akhil Reddy Bobba was the only Indian singles player who failed to progress. He went down to Malaysia’s Boon Le Lim 13-15, 16-18 in a close encounter. Although Bobba was competitive in both games, he could not find the decisive points needed to extend his campaign.

Boys’ Doubles: Yogansh and Aathish Advance

India’s boys’ doubles campaign produced contrasting outcomes in the round of 32.

Yogansh Singh and Aathish Sreenivas PV secured a straight-game victory over Estonia’s Marti Joost and Rasmus Roogsoo, winning 16-14, 15-8. After edging a competitive opening game, the Indian pair gained greater control in the second to progress.

Pavan Suresh and Punith Suresh, however, were unable to overcome Hong Kong’s Njoto Michaelangelo and Yu Zhirui Jerry. The Indian duo took the opening game 17-15 but lost the next two 13-15, 10-15 to exit the competition.

The girls’ doubles competition followed a similar pattern, with one Indian pair advancing and another narrowly missing out.

Aanya Bisht and Angel Punera produced a convincing display against the Philippines’ Enya Freya Edyna Almazan and Rehina Zoey Denise, winning 15-7, 15-7. Their straight-game victory secured progress after a controlled performance.

Diya Bheemaiah and Baruni Parshwal, meanwhile, suffered a close defeat against Indonesia’s Atresia Naufa Candani and Adelia Nirul M. The Indian pair won the second game 15-12 after losing the opener 11-15, but the Indonesians claimed the decider 15-12 to advance.

India’s only mixed doubles match of the day ended in disappointment. Divyansh Agrawal and Varna Prabu Anand lost 11-15, 6-15 to Hong Kong’s Cheung Sai Shing and Wing Chi Chu in the round of 64.

The straight-game defeat brought their campaign to an end, leaving the Indian contingent to focus on the remaining singles and doubles matches.

India’s six singles victories provided the clearest positive from the day’s action at the World Junior Championships. Patri and Shaina impressed with comfortable wins, while Nishchal, Khangurra, Andluri and Ruparelia showed composure in different match situations to progress.

The doubles results were less consistent, although the victories for Yogansh-Aathish and Bisht-Punera ensured India retained representation in both categories.

With the tournament moving deeper into its knockout stages, the challenge will become more demanding. For India’s young shuttlers, the immediate priority is to build on these performances, maintain their composure in tight games and turn promising progress into a sustained challenge for honours.
