Ashmita Chaliha reaches the Denmark Open 2026 round of 16 after beating Kaloyana Nalabantova, while Satwik-Chirag and Ayush Shetty exit.

Ashmita rallies from significant deficits in both games to defeat Bulgaria’s Kaloyana Nalabantova, while Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty suffer a narrow three-game defeat against China’s He-Ren pair.

Ashmita Chaliha produced one of India’s standout performances at the Denmark Open 2026, overcoming higher-ranked Bulgaria’s Kaloyana Nalabantova in straight games to reach the women’s singles round of 16. However, it was a difficult day for several other Indian shuttlers, with the men’s doubles combination of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty suffering a heartbreaking three-game defeat, while Ayush Shetty once again came up short against Indonesia’s Alwi Farhan.

India also endured disappointing results in women’s doubles and women’s singles, as Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand Pullela, the Panda sisters, and Devika Sihag exited the Super 750 tournament.

Ashmita Chaliha demonstrated considerable resilience to defeat Nalabantova 21-18, 22-20 in their women’s singles round-of-32 encounter. The Indian had to recover from difficult positions in both games, making the victory particularly impressive. She trailed 14-17 in the opening game before finding a way back into the contest and closing it out 21-18.

The second game presented an even bigger challenge. Ashmita found herself six points behind at 13-19, with Nalabantova seemingly on course to force a decider. However, the Indian raised her level under pressure, recovered the deficit and won the game 22-20 to seal the match in straight games.

Her ability to remain composed while trailing in both games was the defining feature of the performance. Rather than allowing the Bulgarian to dictate the closing stages, Ashmita fought her way back and converted the opportunities that mattered. The win sends Ashmita into the round of 16 and provides a significant boost to India’s women’s singles campaign at the Denmark Open.

Satwik-Chirag Lose Nail-Biting Three-Game Battle

India’s leading men’s doubles pair, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, suffered a narrow opening-round defeat against China’s He Ren and Ren Xiangyu, losing 21-12, 15-21, 19-21 in a match lasting approximately an hour.

The Indians started strongly, taking the opening game 21-12 to establish early control. However, the Chinese pair responded in the second game, winning 21-15 to force a decider.

The final game proved to be a contest of fine margins, with neither pair able to establish a decisive advantage. Satwik and Chirag eventually went down 19-21, missing out on a place in the next round.

One of the key challenges for the Indian pair was finding effective attacking opportunities from their serve. They were frequently forced to rely on their return game, while Ren’s defensive work during the longer rallies made it difficult to finish points.

Despite the close scoreline, the Indians could not find the openings required to turn the deciding game in their favour. The defeat was also notable because it marked their first loss against the He-Ren combination.

For Satwik and Chirag, the result will be a frustrating exit after a competitive performance in which the final few points ultimately determined the outcome.

Ayush Shetty Falls to Alwi Farhan Again

Ayush Shetty also exited the tournament after losing to Indonesia’s Alwi Farhan in three games. The result continued a difficult run for the Indian against his Indonesian opponent. Ayush has now lost four of their five meetings this year, highlighting the challenge Farhan has posed for him.

Farhan’s ability to disrupt Ayush’s rhythm once again proved decisive, leaving the Indian unable to progress beyond the opening round. The defeat represents another missed opportunity for Ayush to make a deep run at a major tournament. With their head-to-head record increasingly favouring the Indonesian, finding a tactical solution against Farhan will be important for the Indian in future meetings.

India suffered further setbacks in the women’s doubles competition. Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand Pullela lost their round-of-32 encounter against China’s Yan Fei Chen and Hsieh Pei Shan. The Chinese pair won the opening game 22-20 before closing out the match 21-14.

Rutaparna Panda and Swetaparna Panda also exited after losing to China’s Bao Li Jing and Zi Han Cao. The Chinese combination secured a 21-14, 21-14 victory to progress to the next round. In women’s singles, Devika Sihag was eliminated by Thailand’s Pornpawee Chochuwong. The Thai shuttler won 21-13, 21-14 in a match lasting 41 minutes, bringing Devika’s campaign to an end.

The results left Ashmita as the standout Indian performer among the matches covered, with her comeback victory offering a positive note amid several opening-round exits.

The Denmark Open’s opening-round results delivered contrasting lessons for the Indian contingent. Ashmita showed how composure and determination can turn seemingly unfavourable positions into victories, while Satwik and Chirag were left to rue a narrow defeat in a match that could have gone either way. Ayush’s recurring struggles against Farhan and the exits in women’s doubles and singles further underlined the challenges facing India at the Super 750 event.

For Ashmita, however, the focus now shifts to the round of 16. Having recovered from deficits of 14-17 and 13-19 to defeat Nalabantova, she will enter her next match with confidence gained from a hard-fought victory.

Her performance has provided India with an important positive result at the Denmark Open 2026, even as several established names were unable to progress beyond the first round.
