Can India Still Qualify for the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 Semi-finals? Here’s What They Need

India’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals of the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 have taken a major hit after a 3-1 defeat to the Netherlands, but Harmanpreet Singh and Co. are not out of the tournament yet.
The Netherlands now has six points from two matches, while England has three. Argentina and India are both on zero points, although Argentina has played one match fewer. The top two teams from Pool E will qualify for the semi-finals.
So, what does India need to stay alive?
India must beat Argentina
The first requirement is straightforward: India has to beat Argentina on August 24. A draw or defeat would end India’s hopes of finishing in the top two. But even a win will not be enough on its own.
Argentina need to beat England
India now needs Argentina to defeat England in their Pool E meeting. If England wins or draws, they will stay ahead of India and Argentina on points, leaving India unable to finish in the top two.
If Argentina beats England, all three teams, England, Argentina, and India, could potentially finish on three points, with goal difference then becoming crucial.
The margin of victory matters
This is where it gets complicated. England currently has a +2 goal difference, while India is on -4. Argentina is on -2.
For example, if Argentina beat England 2-1, England would still have a +1 goal difference. Even if India then beat Argentina 2-0, India would remain behind England on goal difference.
India, therefore, needs a combination of
Argentina beating England
India beating Argentina
The two results producing a goal difference good enough for India to finish above England and Argentina
The bigger Argentina’s winning margin against England, the easier India’s equation becomes. Similarly, the bigger India’s win over Argentina, the better their chances of overtaking England on goal difference.
India’s route is extremely narrow
India have already lost 3-1 to the Netherlands, leaving them with a -4 goal difference after two matches. That means Harmanpreet Singh’s side cannot afford to simply scrape past Argentina. They need to win convincingly and hope Argentina does them a favor against England.
For example, if Argentina beat England 3-0, England’s goal difference would fall to -1. India would then need a strong win over Argentina to give themselves a realistic chance of finishing above England.
The exact qualification margin will therefore depend on the score of Argentina vs England.
India’s equation
In simple terms, India needs Argentina to beat England, India to beat Argentina + India to overturn the goal-difference deficit.
There is no room for another defeat, and India no longer controls their own destiny. The route to the semi-finals is extremely narrow. But it is still open. And in a World Cup, as India’s players and fans know all too well, you never say never.
