India’s hopes of making a deeper run at the FIH Hockey World Cup suffered a major setback as the Netherlands secured a 3-1 victory in a high-intensity Pool E clash.

India matched the reigning Olympic champions for long periods and even found a way back into the contest through Harmanpreet Singh in the final quarter, but two Dutch goals in quick succession proved decisive.

For much of the opening half, India showed the defensive organisation and counter-attacking intent that had made them competitive against the world’s leading teams. However, the Dutch capitalised on crucial moments in the second half, first breaking the deadlock through Telgenkamp before adding two more goals to seal the result.

The match began with India fielding Suraj Karkera in goal, with captain Harmanpreet Singh leading the side. The starting XI also included Jarmanpreet Singh, Sukjeet Singh, Sanjay, Hardik Singh, Manpreet Singh, Rajinder Singh, Sumit, Mandeep Singh and Abhishek.

India made an encouraging start and looked to attack down the flanks. An early circle entry created some pressure on the Dutch defence, while Manpreet Singh was also involved at both ends of the field. The experienced midfielder made an important recovery run to prevent an early Netherlands attack after India lost possession.

The Dutch had their first major opportunity through a penalty corner in the opening quarter after finding Sumit’s foot inside the circle. India, however, defended the situation well and ensured the scores remained level at the end of the first 15 minutes.

The second quarter saw the Netherlands increase the pressure. The hosts earned a penalty corner early in the period and were handed multiple retakes, but the Indian defence stood firm. India’s penalty-corner unit and defensive structure managed to keep the Dutch away from goal during a sustained spell of pressure.

India then came close to taking the lead themselves.

A brilliant pass from Manpreet from the right found Dilpreet inside the circle. The Indian forward attempted to beat Dutch goalkeeper Meijer, but the goalkeeper came out quickly to block the effort. Rajinder was alert to the rebound and had a close-range attempt, but the Dutch defence recovered in time to deny India what could have been a crucial opening goal.

The teams went into half-time locked at 0-0, with India having every reason to believe they could challenge the Olympic champions.

The message from the Indian camp was clear. The pressing had worked, opportunities had been created, but India needed to be more clinical in front of goal.

The third quarter remained fiercely contested before the Netherlands finally found the breakthrough.

Reyenga received the ball inside the Indian circle, where a deflection caused the ball to bounce up. He managed to get a shot away, and Telgenkamp was perfectly positioned to apply the final touch and beat the Indian goalkeeper.

The goal gave the Netherlands a 1-0 lead and shifted the momentum of the match. India continued to search for a response and won a penalty corner through a brilliant piece of play by Abhishek. Harmanpreet’s drag flick found the foot of the first rusher, leading India to take a successful referral. However, the retake did not result in a goal.

The pressure intensified when Shilanand Lakra was shown a card for dangerous play inside the circle, leaving India temporarily down to 10 players. Manpreet stepped in quickly as tensions rose between the players, helping calm the situation. Despite the setback, India entered the final quarter still just one goal behind and with the match very much alive.

India earned another penalty corner within the opening minutes of the fourth quarter. With Harmanpreet temporarily off the field, Amit Rohidas took the initial drag flick, which hit the foot of the first rusher. India successfully referred the decision, earning another opportunity.

Sanjay took the retake, producing a well-directed effort, but the Dutch defence came up with an important save.

The missed chances soon became costly.

The Netherlands produced one of the best passages of hockey in the match to double their lead. A quick steal triggered a rapid counter-attack, with three sharp passes moving the ball forward at speed. The Dutch entered the circle and finished clinically to make it 2-0.

India, however, refused to surrender.

Rajinder won another penalty corner, bringing Harmanpreet back into the action. This time, the Indian captain made no mistake. His powerful drag flick found the back of the net to reduce the deficit to 2-1.

With the goal, India was back in contention and had renewed hope of finding an equaliser. But just minutes later, another costly turnover ended those hopes.

Manpreet lost possession in midfield, allowing the Netherlands to break forward quickly. Thijs van Dam finished the move to restore the Dutch two-goal advantage and make it 3-1. The goal effectively settled the contest and highlighted the fine margins at the highest level of international hockey.

India had competed strongly for long periods and created enough opportunities to challenge the Netherlands. Their defensive discipline kept the Dutch scoreless for the entire first half, while the attack produced several promising moments. But against a team of the Netherlands’ quality, missed chances and turnovers were punished immediately.

Harmanpreet’s goal offered a glimpse of a possible comeback, but the Dutch responded with the clinical efficiency expected from a team capable of punishing even the smallest mistake.

For India, the defeat will be particularly frustrating because the performance contained several positives. However, at the World Cup level, converting opportunities and avoiding costly errors remain decisive factors—and the Netherlands made sure India paid for both.
