India Beat Pakistan 5-3 to Reach Round 2 of FIH Hockey World Cup 2026, Stay in Semi-Final Race

India booked their place in Round 2 of the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 after defeating Pakistan 5-3 in a high-scoring Pool D encounter in Amstelveen on Wednesday.
The victory took India to six points from three matches and confirmed their second-place finish in the group, keeping their hopes of reaching the semi-finals alive.
England topped Pool D with three consecutive victories, while India secured the other qualification spot for Round 2. Pakistan and Wales will now move into the classification phase.
For India, the result was about more than another victory over their traditional rivals. It ensured progression from a tightly contested pool and extended their campaign into the next phase of the World Cup, where the competition will become increasingly difficult.
Captain Harmanpreet Singh and Abhishek led India's attacking effort with two goals each, while Hardik Singh also scored from the penalty spot. Pakistan remained competitive throughout the contest, with Hannan Shahid scoring twice and Sufiyan Khan adding another, but India had enough attacking quality to secure the win.
India made an aggressive start and quickly established control. The opening goal arrived in the fifth minute after sustained pressure around the Pakistan circle. A ricochet from an Abhishek effort led to India's first penalty corner of the match.
Harmanpreet's initial drag-flick resulted in a retake after striking the rusher's foot. Given another opportunity, the Indian captain made no mistake. His powerful flick beat goalkeeper Ali Raza and gave India an early 1-0 lead.
The goal lifted India's intensity further. They continued to attack and created another penalty corner soon afterwards, although Ali Raza denied Harmanpreet's low attempt.
India doubled their advantage in the 11th minute through Abhishek. Harmanpreet's aerial delivery found the forward, who entered the circle and attempted a clever pass. The ball took a deflection off the Pakistan defence and wrong-footed the goalkeeper before crossing the line.
At 2-0, India appeared to be taking control of the contest, but the match soon developed into an end-to-end battle.
India extended their lead to 3-0 in the 21st minute. A penalty-corner variation initially failed to produce a goal, but Harmanpreet remained alert to the rebound. After creating space inside the circle, the captain fired home to score his second goal of the evening.
Pakistan, however, refused to allow India to pull away. Just a minute later, an Indian turnover in midfield allowed Pakistan to attack. The Indian goalkeeper made the initial save, but Hannan Shahid reacted quickly to score from the loose ball and reduce the deficit to 3-1.
India responded almost immediately and once again demonstrated their attacking sharpness. In the 24th minute, Abhishek produced an excellent finish after collecting Jugraj Singh's pass at the top of the circle. The forward continued his run and scored from a tight angle to restore India's three-goal advantage at 4-1.
Pakistan hit back again through Sufiyan Khan, who converted a penalty corner to make it 4-2. The four-goal second quarter underlined the intensity of the India-Pakistan contest, with both sides finding attacking success.
India entered the second half knowing that the result was critical for qualification to Round 2. They responded positively and scored their fifth goal in the 35th minute. Aditya was pushed inside the circle, leading to a penalty stroke for India. Hardik stepped up and calmly converted, putting India 5-2 ahead.
Pakistan continued to attack and found another goal in the 46th minute. Hannan Shahid capitalised on an Indian error in midfield and scored his second of the match to make it 5-3.
The final quarter brought further pressure from Pakistan, who pushed numbers forward in search of another comeback. A late penalty corner offered them an opportunity to close the gap, but the variation broke down, and India cleared the danger.
India managed the closing stages effectively and saw out the match to confirm their place in Round 2. The result is a significant step in India's World Cup campaign. By finishing second in Pool D behind England, India remains in the race for the semi-finals and will now face a tougher challenge in the next stage.
The 5-3 scoreline also reflected India's attacking strength. Harmanpreet's leadership, Abhishek's sharp finishing and Hardik's composure from the penalty spot gave India five goals when qualification was on the line.
Defensively, however, India will know that conceding three goals is an area that requires improvement as the tournament progresses. Against stronger opposition in Round 2, defensive discipline and control in midfield will become even more important.
For now, though, India can take confidence from a crucial victory. They defeated Pakistan, finished second in Pool D and, most importantly, reached Round 2 of the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026.
The road to the semi-finals remains open.
