The Indian Women’s Hockey Team will face England in a crucial final Pool D fixture at the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 in Amstelveen on Thursday, with the race for the top two places still wide open.

India currently sit at the top of Pool D with four points from two matches, level with China but ahead on goal difference. However, England remain firmly in contention, making the final round of pool matches decisive for all three teams. With only the top two teams from each of the four pools remaining in contention for the semifinals, there is little margin for error.

India’s campaign has already featured a hard-fought draw against China and an emphatic victory over South Africa. England, meanwhile, have shown both their quality and vulnerability, beating South Africa comfortably before suffering a defeat to China. The result in Amstelveen will therefore have a major impact on India’s World Cup journey.

The Salima Tete-led Indian side began its campaign with a 2-2 draw against China, the Paris Olympics silver medallists. India showed composure and resilience against one of the strongest teams in the group, earning a valuable point in a closely contested encounter. They then produced a far more dominant performance against South Africa.

India defeated South Africa 6-1, with six different players finding the net in an impressive display of attacking depth. The result pushed India to four points and gave them a goal difference of +5. China are also on four points but sit behind India with a goal difference of +2.

England are third with three points after their 4-0 victory over South Africa. Their 4-2 defeat to China, however, means they enter the final round needing another strong performance to secure a place in the top two. China face South Africa in the other final Pool D fixture.

That means the standings could change quickly. A victory over England would give India the strongest possible chance of finishing at the top of the pool, while also removing the need to depend on the result of the China-South Africa match.

India carrying confidence into England clash

India will enter the match with growing belief after their first two performances. The draw against China demonstrated that the team can remain composed against elite opposition, while the six-goal performance against South Africa highlighted their ability to take control of a match. Chief Coach Sjoerd Marijne believes the England fixture will provide an important opportunity to measure the team’s progress.

“It will be an exciting match,” Marijne said. “Last time we lost against them in the FIH World Cup qualifiers and it’s now to see the progress we have made and if we did come closer to them.” That previous result adds another layer to Thursday’s contest.

India have the opportunity not only to secure an important World Cup result but also to demonstrate how far the team has progressed since their last meeting with England. The current campaign has already provided encouraging signs. One of the biggest positives from the South Africa victory was the spread of goals across the squad. Six different Indian players scored, showing that the side is not dependent on one or two attacking players to produce results.

That variety could become particularly important against England, who are likely to offer a more organised and physically demanding challenge.

India’s younger generation has also made an encouraging start to the World Cup. Teenagers Sakshi Rana and Sunelita Toppo were among the scorers against South Africa, highlighting the confidence shown by the younger players on one of hockey’s biggest stages.

Their emergence is significant for a squad featuring 11 World Cup debutants. Major international tournaments can test inexperienced players, particularly when qualification scenarios add extra pressure. However, India’s early performances suggest that the younger members of the squad are beginning to adapt quickly.

Their development has been supported by the experience of established players such as Neha, Navneet Kaur, Lalremsiami and Sushila Chanu. The blend of youth and experience has given India a balanced look through the opening two matches. Captain Salima Tete has led a side that has shown resilience against China and attacking confidence against South Africa.

The challenge now is to reproduce those qualities against an England side fighting for its own World Cup future.

England know exactly what is at stake. Their opening 4-0 victory over South Africa demonstrated their ability to dominate opposition when they gain control of the match. The subsequent 2-4 defeat against China, however, means they cannot afford another setback. A win against India would guarantee that England remain firmly in the top-two race.

India can therefore expect an aggressive and high-intensity contest. The match will test the team's defensive discipline, especially against an opponent that will look to apply pressure from the opening stages. For India, maintaining compactness without losing their attacking intent will be crucial. Goal difference could also become a factor depending on the result between China and South Africa. That makes every goal and every defensive intervention potentially significant.

India will need to manage the match intelligently while remaining aware of the broader qualification picture.

A defining match in India’s World Cup campaign

India have made an encouraging start to the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026, collecting four points from their opening two matches and scoring eight goals. However, the most important test of the pool phase now awaits. A strong result against England could secure India’s progression, strengthen their chances of finishing first in Pool D and underline the progress made under Marijne.

It would also give confidence to a squad blending experienced internationals with a new generation of players making their World Cup debuts. For India, Thursday's match is about more than three points. It is a chance to prove that the performances against China and South Africa were not isolated results.

With a place in the top two and the race to the semifinals on the line, India will need to deliver once again in Amstelveen.
