CheQ Mumba Masters Launch New Era Ahead of Global Chess League Season 4

The CheQ Mumba Masters have officially begun a new chapter ahead of Season 4 of the Tech Mahindra Global Chess League, with the franchise and its new title partner CheQ coming together for an interactive welcome event at CheQ’s new headquarters in Bengaluru.
The ceremony brought together some of the biggest names associated with the franchise, including international grandmasters, team management and CheQ executives, as the two organisations formally marked a partnership built around shared values, ambition and a broader vision for the growth of chess.
The event was hosted by CheQ CEO and Founder Aditya Soni and went beyond a traditional sponsor introduction. The afternoon featured rapid-fire question-and-answer sessions, personal anecdotes from the players about competing in high-pressure situations and an informal chess showdown between Soni and the grandmasters.
The CheQ Mumba Masters squad was represented by star grandmasters Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, Harika Dronavalli and Bardiya Daneshvar, with Grandmaster and team captain Surya Sekhar Ganguly leading the group. U Mumba CEO Suhail Chandhok and ChessBase co-founder Sagar Shah also joined the players and Soni on stage for the official welcome.
A Partnership Built Around Chess
For CheQ, the association represents more than a conventional sports sponsorship. Soni spoke about the company's evolution from a simple credit-management concept into a major financial platform that now processes nearly $800 million in monthly payments for more than five million users.
He also explained why chess was a natural fit for the brand.
“We started with a simple belief that credit access in India was growing and users needed one place to manage it all,” Soni said. “As we scale and invest heavily into our brand, chess feels like the most natural alignment. Chess runs in our DNA, even our company name, 'CheQ', was directly inspired by our love for the game.”
That connection was also visible in the visual identity of the partnership. According to Chandhok, the colours and branding of CheQ’s new headquarters closely matched the CheQ Mumba Masters' team jersey, creating an immediate sense of alignment between the two organisations.
“When we looked at renders of CheQ's new office, we were amazed to see that their logo and office colours matched our team jersey perfectly,” Chandhok said.
However, he stressed that the partnership goes much deeper than aesthetics. With CheQ coming on board as title partner, the franchise is setting its sights on a first championship in the Tech Mahindra Global Chess League.
“We’ve had a strong few years, and with CheQ on board as our title partner, we are aiming to win our first championship,” Chandhok added.
Looking Beyond the Two-Week League
While success in Season 4 remains an immediate objective, both sides emphasised that their ambitions extend well beyond the league itself.
Soni told the players that CheQ's commitment to the franchise would remain strong regardless of the team's results on the chessboard. More importantly, he outlined a desire to use the partnership to create initiatives that contribute to the sport throughout the year.
“We are fully committed to this partnership and to the team, irrespective of the outcome on the board,” Soni said. “We really want to do more for chess outside of just these two weeks, and we look forward to doing some really cool stuff together throughout the year.”
Chandhok echoed that long-term approach, describing the partnership as an opportunity to collaborate beyond the Global Chess League season and contribute to the wider growth of chess.
“To have CheQ on board is fantastic, and we want to build a very strong partnership together,” he said. “It’s not just on the board for these two weeks, we're excited to collaborate with Aditya and the team across the entire year to grow the sport.”
Building the CheQ Mumba Masters Brand
The welcome event concluded with a networking lunch and a strategic briefing focused on the road ahead. Digital campaigns, fan-engagement initiatives and ground activations are among the plans being developed for the upcoming season.
For the CheQ Mumba Masters, the partnership therefore represents both a fresh identity and a broader commercial and sporting ambition. With a strong international lineup led by Surya Sekhar Ganguly, the franchise will enter Season 4 looking to translate its new momentum into success on the board.
But the bigger opportunity could lie beyond the tournament itself. By combining a high-profile franchise, an expanding financial technology brand and some of the world's leading chess talent, the CheQ Mumba Masters and CheQ are positioning their partnership as a year-round platform to bring more fans into the sport and strengthen chess's growing ecosystem in India.
With Season 4 approaching, the message from Bengaluru was clear: the CheQ Mumba Masters are not simply changing their name. They are looking to build a new era for the franchise—both on the chessboard and beyond it.
