Dabang Delhi TTC Fight Back to Defeat UP Prometheans in Butterfly UTT Season 7

Dabang Delhi TTC made a winning start to their Butterfly Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT) Season 7 campaign with a hard-fought 9-6 victory over UP Prometheans in the opening match of Friday's double-header at the Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Indoor Stadium in Goa.
Although the final scoreline suggested a comfortable win, the contest was far more competitive than the numbers indicated. UP Prometheans pushed Delhi throughout the tie, with several matches going the distance before Dabang Delhi's experienced players delivered in the decisive moments. The standout performer of the evening was Spanish international Maria Xiao, who won her singles match before combining with G Sathiyan to dominate the mixed doubles, helping Delhi recover from an early deficit and seize control of the tie.
The match also marked another milestone for Indian table tennis, as the newly introduced Table Tennis Review (TTR) system was used for the first time in Butterfly UTT history.
UP Prometheans began the evening on the front foot thanks to Indian star Manav Thakkar. Facing Egypt's Youssef Abdelaziz, Thakkar displayed excellent control and consistency to win the opening two games 11-8 and 11-5, placing Delhi under immediate pressure. Although Abdelaziz mounted a spirited comeback in the third game to win 11-10, the overall match went in Thakkar's favour by a 2-1 margin, giving UP an early advantage in the tie.
The victory once again highlighted Thakkar's growing importance to the Prometheans and reinforced his reputation as one of India's leading table tennis players.
The opening singles also witnessed a landmark moment for Indian table tennis. The newly introduced Table Tennis Review (TTR) system was used for the first time after Manav Thakkar challenged Abdelaziz's serve for alleged ball visibility violations. His first two reviews were successful, with the system confirming his appeals while allowing him to retain his allotted unsuccessful challenges.
Later in the match, however, a third review regarding ball visibility was rejected after video evidence confirmed that the serve complied with the regulations. The successful implementation of the review system demonstrated Butterfly UTT's continued commitment to adopting modern technology and enhancing fairness in officiating.
Maria Xiao Leads Delhi's Fightback
After falling behind early, Dabang Delhi responded immediately through Maria Xiao. The experienced Spaniard faced Australia's Yangzi Liu in one of the evening's most entertaining contests.
Maria controlled the opening two games with aggressive attacking play, winning 11-6 and 11-7 before Liu responded by taking the third game 11-4. Despite dropping the final game, Maria's 2-1 victory levelled the overall tie and shifted momentum firmly towards Delhi.
Her calm approach and ability to deliver under pressure proved instrumental in turning the contest around.
The decisive moment of the tie came in the mixed doubles. Maria Xiao partnered Indian veteran G Sathiyan against the UP pairing of Manav Thakkar and Yangzi Liu.
The Delhi duo produced a near-flawless performance. Their superior coordination and attacking intent allowed them to dominate throughout the contest, winning 11-9, 11-7, and 11-5 without allowing the Prometheans pair any opportunity to establish rhythm.
The emphatic 3-0 victory gave Dabang Delhi a significant advantage in the overall tie and shifted the pressure firmly onto their opponents.
Veteran Indian paddler G Sathiyan continued Delhi's momentum in the second men's singles against Germany's Ricardo Walther. Sathiyan claimed the opening two games through consistent attacking play, winning 11-8 and 11-6. Walther responded strongly by taking the third game 11-6, but Sathiyan's earlier success ensured he secured the match 2-1, extending Delhi's lead further.
The victory underlined Sathiyan's experience and ability to deliver in crucial moments for his franchise.
UP Prometheans refused to surrender despite trailing heading into the final contest. In the women's singles, Sayali Wani produced an impressive comeback against India's rising star Divyanshi Bhowmick. After losing the opening game 9-11, Sayali responded with greater aggression and consistency to win the next two games 11-5 and 11-10, earning a 2-1 victory.
Although the win reduced the overall deficit, it was not enough to prevent Delhi from securing the tie. The closely contested finish reflected how competitive the encounter had been despite the final 9-6 scoreline.
Maria Xiao's outstanding contribution earned her the ChatGPT Match IQ Player of the Tie award. Her victories in both singles and mixed doubles proved decisive in Delhi's comeback and established her as one of the early stars of Butterfly UTT Season 7. Meanwhile, Germany's Ricardo Walther received the Bisleri Shot of the Tie award for his impressive sequence of attacking winners during the third game of his match against Sathiyan.
Dream UTT Juniors Continue
Earlier in the day, action also continued in the Dream UTT Juniors competition, which runs alongside the senior league. U Mumba TT registered a narrow 5-4 victory over Dempo Goa Challengers, bouncing back after their defeat in the senior competition. Meanwhile, HVR Kolkata ThunderBlades maintained their excellent start to the tournament with another 5-4 victory, this time against Ahmedabad APL Pipers.
The junior league continues to provide an important platform for India's emerging table tennis talent to compete alongside the country's biggest franchise competition.
With the victory, Dabang Delhi TTC have made an encouraging start to their Season 7 campaign and will now look to carry that momentum into Saturday's clash against HVR Kolkata ThunderBlades. The combination of Maria Xiao's consistency, Sathiyan Gnanasekaran's experience, and the team's strong doubles performance gives Delhi a balanced lineup capable of challenging for the title.
For UP Prometheans, the defeat will be disappointing given how closely contested several matches were. However, the performances of Manav Thakkar and Sayali Wani provide positives as the team looks to bounce back in its next outing.
As Butterfly UTT Season 7 gathers pace in Goa, Friday's contest once again demonstrated why the league remains one of the most competitive franchise table tennis competitions in the world, with momentum capable of shifting through every game and every point.
