Two-time champions Dempo Goa Challengers made an emphatic start to their Butterfly Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT) Season 7 campaign, defeating defending champions U Mumba TT 10-5 in the opening tie at the Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Indoor Stadium in Goa on Thursday.

The hosts produced a commanding all-round performance, with reigning league MVP Bernadette Szocs and teenage sensation Abhinandh PB leading the charge. Both players won their respective singles matches in straight games before joining forces to clinch the mixed doubles, ensuring Goa sealed the tie with two matches still remaining.

The victory immediately established Dempo Goa Challengers as one of the early title favorites, while U Mumba TT began their title defense with a disappointing defeat.

The seventh edition of Ultimate Table Tennis officially got underway in the presence of several distinguished guests. Goa Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant declared the tournament open, joined by International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) President Petra Sörling, Butterfly UTT co-promoters Vita Dani and Niraj Bajaj, along with leading figures from Indian and international table tennis.

With Goa hosting the league for the first time, the opening evening witnessed an enthusiastic crowd as the home franchise delivered a performance worthy of the occasion.

The standout performer of the evening was undoubtedly Abhinandh PB, who continued his rapid rise with a stunning display against French paddler Lilian Bardet. The 18-year-old Indian dominated from the outset, using powerful forehand attacks and a highly effective serve to control every aspect of the contest. Abhinandh was particularly impressive on serve, winning 21 of his 33 service points, leaving Bardet with few opportunities to mount any challenge.

He raced through the contest with scores of 11-6, 11-2, 11-3, giving Goa the perfect start and underlining why he is regarded as one of India's brightest young table tennis prospects. The performance reflected remarkable maturity for a teenager competing against an experienced international opponent.

If Abhinandh provided the early momentum, Bernadette Szocs ensured Goa remained firmly in control. The Romanian star, who won the league's Most Valuable Player award last season, produced another composed display to defeat Nithyashree Mani in straight games. Szocs comfortably claimed the opening game 11-7 before facing stronger resistance in the second. Nithyashree challenged the Romanian throughout the game, but Szocs raised her level during the crucial points to edge it 11-9.

She completed the victory by taking the third game 11-7, extending Goa's overall advantage while once again demonstrating why she remains one of the world's most reliable performers in the UTT.

With momentum firmly behind them, Goa effectively wrapped up the contest in the mixed doubles. Abhinandh and Szocs combined brilliantly to overcome Manush Shah and UTT debutant Anna Hursey in three games. The Goa pair claimed the opening game 11-7 before U Mumba responded to level the contest by winning the second 11-7.

However, the hosts regained control in the decider.

Abhinandh's aggressive play complemented Szocs' consistency perfectly as the duo closed out the final game 11-6, securing the match and ensuring Goa had already won the overall tie with two matches still to be played.

The result highlighted the excellent chemistry between Goa's two standout performers.

Although the overall result had already been decided, U Mumba managed to reduce the margin during the final two matches. Captain Manush Shah delivered the defending champions' first victory of the evening in the second men's singles. Facing Spain's Alvaro Robles, Shah edged a closely fought contest 2-1, including winning the season's first Golden Point to claim the opening game before eventually sealing the match.

The final contest featured two highly promising youngsters making their Butterfly UTT debuts. Goa's Syndrela Das, currently the ITTF World No. 1 in the Under-19 girls' doubles rankings alongside Divyanshi Bhowmick, made an encouraging start by winning the opening game against Welsh international Anna Hursey.

Hursey, however, demonstrated her quality by fighting back to win the next two games and secure another point for U Mumba. Despite those late successes, the defending champions were unable to recover from Goa's dominant opening three matches.

Abhinandh's outstanding performances were recognized with a remarkable clean sweep of the individual honors. The youngster won the ChatGPT Match IQ Player of the Tie, Indian Player of the Tie, and Bisleri Shot of the Tie awards after starring in both singles and mixed doubles. Bernadette Szocs was named the Foreign Player of the Tie, capping another impressive evening for the Romanian star.

The awards reflected the pair's complete control of the opening tie and their importance to Goa's championship ambitions.

Dream UTT Juniors Continue Alongside Main League

Earlier in the day, action also continued in Dream UTT Juniors, the league's grassroots competition that runs alongside the senior tournament. HVR Kolkata ThunderBlades maintained their unbeaten start with a narrow 5-4 victory over Dabang Delhi TTC, while UP Prometheans defeated Ahmedabad APL Pipers 6-3 to continue their impressive campaign.

The junior competition remains an important pathway for identifying and developing India's next generation of table tennis talent.

Following the opening-night action, Butterfly UTT Season 7 continues on Friday with the tournament's first double-header. Dabang Delhi TTC will face UP Prometheans, before HVR Kolkata ThunderBlades take on PBG Pune Jaguars later in the evening.

For Dempo Goa Challengers, the comprehensive victory over the defending champions sends an early statement to the rest of the league. With Bernadette Szocs continuing her outstanding form and Abhinandh PB emerging as one of the stars of the tournament, Goa has made a perfect start to its quest for a third Ultimate Table Tennis title. Meanwhile, U Mumba TT will look to regroup quickly as they attempt to defend their crown in what promises to be another highly competitive UTT season.
