The wait is finally over as Butterfly Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT) Season 7 gets underway on Wednesday evening with a mouthwatering western derby between hosts Dempo Goa Challengers and defending champions U Mumba TT at the Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Indoor Stadium in Goa.

Scheduled to begin at 7:30 PM IST, the opening fixture brings together the two most successful teams of the last three seasons. While Dempo Goa Challengers remain the league's most decorated franchise with two UTT titles, U Mumba TT enter the new season as the reigning champions after lifting their maiden trophy in Season 6.

Adding further intrigue is the recent history between the two teams. Last season, U Mumba produced a dramatic comeback victory over Goa in the semifinals before going on to win the title. That result ended Goa's hopes of securing a third championship, making Wednesday's opener an opportunity for immediate revenge.

For the first time, Goa will host the entire Ultimate Table Tennis season, giving the Dempo Goa Challengers the advantage of playing in front of a passionate home crowd throughout the tournament. Owned by Shrinivas Dempo and Vivek Bhargava, the franchise has established itself as the benchmark in the competition, winning back-to-back titles in 2023 and 2024 before narrowly missing out on another final appearance last season.

This year, Goa has once again assembled one of the strongest squads in the league, blending world-class international experience with exciting young Indian talent.

Leading the lineup is Bernadette Szocs, arguably the biggest signing of the Season 7 auction. The Romanian star, who was the league's Most Valuable Player last season, arrives in Goa after helping U Mumba lift the title in 2025. Acquired for the highest bid of the auction, Szocs immediately becomes the centrepiece of Goa's championship ambitions. She is joined by Spanish Olympian Alvaro Robles, whose experience on the international circuit adds further quality to the squad.

The Indian contingent features promising youngsters Syndrela Das, Divyansh Srivastava, Ananya Chande, and Abhinandh PB, giving the Challengers an exciting blend of youth and experience.

Champions Return with a Fresh Look

Although U Mumba TT are defending champions, their squad have undergone significant changes ahead of Season 7. The biggest addition is Indian star Manush Shah, currently one of the country's leading paddlers and among the world's top doubles players. His arrival strengthens U Mumba's Indian core while providing the team with one of the most reliable performers in the league.

French international Lilian Bardet and Welsh youngster Anna Hursey form the overseas contingent, supported by Akash Pal, Nityashree Mani, and Anusha Kutumbale. Despite losing Bernadette Szocs to Goa, U Mumba have retained continuity on the coaching front, with Jay Modak and John Murphy returning after masterminding the franchise's first UTT title last season.

That stability could prove invaluable during the opening stages of the competition.

One of the evening's biggest attractions will be the showdown between two of Europe's finest players. Bernadette Szocs has consistently been among the league's most dominant performers and enters the tournament after another successful international season. Her aggressive attacking style, quick reflexes, and ability to handle pressure have made her one of UTT's most valuable players.

Across the table is Anna Hursey, one of Europe's brightest young prospects, who brings a fearless style of play and valuable international experience despite her young age. In the men's contests, Alvaro Robles and Lilian Bardet promise another fascinating matchup.

Both players possess contrasting styles, with Robles relying on his heavy topspin and tactical variation, while Bardet's speed and counter-attacking game have made him one of France's leading paddlers.

These individual contests could ultimately determine the outcome of the tie.

While international stars often grab the headlines, Ultimate Table Tennis has increasingly become a platform for India's next generation. Goa's Syndrela Das, one of the country's most promising young players, will be eager to make an immediate impact after an impressive rise through the junior ranks. The Challengers also boast Ananya Chande, an Asian Youth Championships gold medallist, and teenage prospect Abhinandh PB, who gained attention after delivering the decisive victory in last season's UTT final while representing U Mumba.

On the opposite side, all eyes will be on Manush Shah. The Indian star enters Season 7 in excellent form following consistent performances on the international circuit and will shoulder much of U Mumba's responsibility in both singles and doubles.

His leadership and ability to perform in pressure situations could once again prove decisive for the defending champions.

New Technology Debuts in Season 7

This season also marks an important technological milestone for the league. Butterfly UTT will introduce the AI-powered Table Tennis Review (TTR) system, developed by Stupa Sports, becoming one of the few table tennis competitions globally to implement video-review technology.

The system will allow teams to challenge key decisions, with reviews expected to be completed in under 20 seconds, adding another strategic element to the competition.

Although the season has only just begun, the opening match carries considerable significance. For Dempo Goa Challengers, victory would immediately establish momentum in front of their home supporters while avenging last season's heartbreaking semifinal defeat. For U Mumba TT, a successful start would reinforce their credentials as title favourites despite several squad changes. With seven teams competing in a single round-robin format, every game carries importance.

Under UTT's unique scoring system, individual games won can ultimately influence playoff qualification, making every point valuable throughout the league phase.

As Butterfly UTT Season 7 begins, few fixtures could better showcase the league's growth than a clash between its most successful franchise and its reigning champion. Featuring world-class international talent, India's leading paddlers, passionate home support, and a fierce rivalry renewed, the opening night in Goa promises to set the tone for another thrilling season of Ultimate Table Tennis.
