Day 3 at World Athletics U20 Championships: Mohammed Ashfaq Eyes History as India Targets Medal Success in Eugene

After a promising second day that featured a national record, a World Championship finalist and another top-six finish, India heads into Day 3 of the World Athletics U20 Championships 2026 with renewed hopes of challenging for medals at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
A total of six Indian athletes will compete across five events, including two medal finals, as India's campaign reaches one of its most crucial stages. The spotlight will firmly be on Mohammed Ashfaq, who has already rewritten the Indian U20 record books and now lines up in the men's 400m final against the world's fastest junior quarter-milers.
India will also have two athletes in the men's javelin throw final, offering another strong opportunity to fight for a podium finish after impressive qualification performances. Alongside the medal events, India's young athletes will also begin their campaigns in the women's javelin throw, women's high jump and men's long jump qualification rounds.
The biggest attraction for Indian athletics fans on Day 3 will undoubtedly be the men's 400m final. Mohammed Ashfaq has enjoyed a dream campaign in Eugene so far.
The 19-year-old shattered his own Indian U20 national record in the heats with a brilliant 45.81 seconds, before backing it up with another outstanding run of 46.00 seconds in the semifinals to qualify for the biggest race of his career. Remarkably, both performances have been faster than the personal best he brought into the championships.
Now, Ashfaq faces an elite field featuring American stars Jayden DeLeon and Quincy Wilson, South Africa's Leendert Koekemoer, Guyana's Malachi Austin, and several other world-class junior athletes. While the competition promises to be fierce, Ashfaq has already demonstrated that he belongs among the world's best.
The final is scheduled for 9:23 AM IST (August 8).
Double Indian Challenge in Men's Javelin Final
India's strongest medal hopes could come in the men's javelin throw final. Both Ashish Yadav and T. Dharanidharan successfully negotiated the qualification round on the opening day. Ashish produced an impressive throw of 69.87m, finishing second overall in qualification, while Dharanidharan advanced after recording 68.07m, placing 12th overall.
The duo now enters the final knowing that another improvement could bring India onto the podium. Indian javelin has enjoyed tremendous growth over recent years, and the country's junior athletes will now look to continue that momentum on the world stage. The final begins at 8:15 AM IST (August 8).
Day 3 will also see three Indian athletes begin their campaigns in qualification events. Poonam will compete in the women's javelin throw qualification (Group A), aiming to secure a place in the final. Meanwhile, Pooja takes part in Group B of the women's high jump qualification, looking to follow Basant's example after he qualified for the men's high jump final earlier in the championships.
India's representation in the field events continues with Shahnawaz Khan, who competes in Group A of the men's long jump qualification. An additional update to the schedule also sees Jithin Arjunan participating in Group B of the men's long jump qualification, giving India two athletes in the event. Both jumpers will be hoping to produce season-best performances to progress to the final.
India's second day at the championships offered encouraging performances despite mixed results. The highlight came from Mohammed Ashfaq, whose sensational national record in the heats was followed by another composed run in the semifinals that secured his place in the world final. Ashfaq's performances have established him among India's brightest sprinting prospects and one of the standout performers of the championships.
Another major positive came from Amanat Kamboj, who produced a personal best throw of 53.24m to finish sixth in the women's discus throw final. The result represented an improvement from her 10th-place finish at the previous edition of the championships and further strengthened India's growing reputation in the throwing events.
India also celebrated qualification for another global final as Basant cleared 2.14m to finish 11th overall in the men's high jump qualification. The reigning Asian U20 champion will now compete in the final on August 9.
Several Indian athletes narrowly missed advancing to later rounds on Day 2. Anshu finished 14th overall after placing ninth in her qualification group in the women's shot put. Tanu Chaudhary ended fifth in her heat of the women's 400m hurdles with 1:00.03, missing out on the semifinals. In the men's 400m hurdles, Amit Kumar clocked 54.01 seconds, finishing last in his heat.
High jumper K. Ambriesh cleared 2.05m but fell short of the qualification mark, while triple jumpers P. Royshan and Dhanush Raj finished 25th and 34th overall, respectively. Although those athletes could not progress, each gained valuable experience competing against the world's leading junior competitors.
