East Bengal Thrash South United 5-0 to Boost Durand Cup Quarter-final Hopes

East Bengal FC produced one of their most dominant performances of the 135th IndianOil Durand Cup, defeating South United FC 5-0 in their final Group A fixture at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata on Friday.

Goals from Dani Ramírez, Mohamad Rashid, Hardik Bhatt, Bipin Singh and David Lalhlansanga sealed a convincing victory for the Red and Gold Brigade, who finished their group campaign with six points and an impressive goal difference of +11. The result significantly improves East Bengal's chances of progressing to the quarter-finals as one of the tournament's best second-placed teams.

For South United FC, the defeat marked the end of their Durand Cup campaign. Despite the heavy scoreline, the Bengaluru-based side displayed resilience for long periods before East Bengal's superior quality eventually proved decisive.

Knowing only a convincing victory would strengthen their qualification hopes, East Bengal started aggressively. Jesin T.K. Thonikkara threatened early with a left-footed effort before South United captain Noel S made an important intervention to prevent another dangerous attack.

South United came even closer shortly after the hour mark. Mustafa Shaikh delivered an excellent cross that Daniyal met ahead of both Sandip Mandi and Anwar Ali. The forward cleverly lifted the ball over the goalkeeper but was unable to direct it towards goal before the chance disappeared.

Those moments briefly hinted at a possible comeback. East Bengal quickly ended those hopes.

The third goal finally arrived in the 73rd minute through an unlikely source. Defender Hardik Bhatt struck a powerful low drive from a distance that appeared comfortably covered by Sunil Singh. However, the ball swerved late, wrong-footing the goalkeeper before slipping into the bottom corner. The goal effectively ended the contest.

Eight minutes later, substitute Bipin Singh added a fourth. Christopher James delivered an inviting cross that was only partially cleared by South United's defence. Bipin timed his run perfectly before steering a close-range header inside the near post. Even at four goals down, South United continued battling until the final whistle. Captain Noel S continued making crucial defensive interventions, while East Bengal squandered further opportunities through Edmund Lalrindika and Jesin.

The final goal arrived deep into stoppage time. Substitute David Lalhlansanga collected possession inside the penalty area before smashing an emphatic left-footed finish into the roof of the net, completing a comprehensive 5-0 victory.

The emphatic win leaves East Bengal in a strong position as they await results from the remaining groups to determine whether their tally of six points and superior goal difference will be enough to secure one of the coveted quarter-final spots reserved for the best second-placed teams.
