FC Goa Fight Back to Hold Chennaiyin FC to 1-1 Draw in ISL 2026–27 Opener

FC Goa fought back to draw 1-1 with Chennaiyin FC in their ISL 2026–27 opener as Irfan Yadwad scored for the visitors before Chiki's 75th-minute header levelled the contest.
FC Goa began their 2026–27 MG Indian Super League campaign with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Chennaiyin FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Fatorda on Saturday.
After Irfan Yadwad put the visitors ahead in the 64th minute, Chiki responded with a headed equaliser 11 minutes later to ensure the Gaurs secured a point in their season opener. The second match of the new ISL campaign featured a closely contested first half before the game opened up after the break. Chennaiyin found the breakthrough through Yadwad, but FC Goa responded with greater attacking urgency and created several opportunities to turn the contest around.
Despite sustained pressure from both sides in the closing stages, neither could find a winner, leaving the teams to settle for a share of the points.
Both teams began the match looking to build their attacks from the back and progress into the final third through measured possession. However, the defensive organisation on either side made it difficult to create clear-cut scoring opportunities during the opening 45 minutes. FC Goa attempted to establish control at home, while Chennaiyin FC remained competitive and looked for openings to threaten the hosts. The contest remained balanced, with neither side managing to convert its attacking moves into a goal.
The teams consequently went into half-time at 0-0, leaving the second half to determine the outcome of an encounter in which the margins appeared narrow. For FC Goa, the challenge was to turn their possession and attacking intent into more decisive opportunities. Chennaiyin, meanwhile, needed to maintain their defensive discipline while looking for chances to exploit spaces in the home side's defence.
The match finally produced its opening goal in the 64th minute when Irfan Yadwad gave Chennaiyin FC the lead. The forward drove a right-footed effort into the far corner, finishing clinically to put the visitors 1-0 ahead. The goal gave Chennaiyin an important advantage and forced FC Goa to increase their attacking commitment in pursuit of an equaliser.
Having taken the lead, Chennaiyin continued to search for a second goal that could have strengthened their position. Ramon Taque came close to adding to the visitors' advantage with a powerful attempt from a tight angle on the right, directing his effort towards the bottom-left corner. The opportunity demonstrated that Chennaiyin remained dangerous on the counter and were not content simply to defend their lead. A second goal would have placed FC Goa under considerably greater pressure, but the hosts survived the threat and continued to push forward.
FC Goa Strike Back Through Chiki
FC Goa's response gathered momentum as the hosts began creating more dangerous opportunities around the Chennaiyin penalty area. In the 70th minute, Ramon produced a powerful curling effort from long range that beat the goalkeeper but struck the post. It was a significant moment for the Gaurs, who came close to restoring parity just six minutes after conceding.
Udanta Singh also threatened the Chennaiyin goal, with his attempt rattling the crossbar. The two efforts highlighted the growing pressure on the visitors' defence and suggested that the equaliser was becoming increasingly likely.
FC Goa eventually found their reward in the 75th minute. A foul on Udanta Singh in the attacking half gave the hosts a free-kick opportunity. The resulting delivery found Chiki, who directed a well-placed header into the bottom-right corner to make it 1-1. The equaliser rewarded FC Goa's persistence and shifted the momentum back towards the home side. After falling behind, the Gaurs had responded with a series of dangerous attempts before finally finding the breakthrough.
For Chennaiyin, the goal meant that the advantage gained through Yadwad's finish had lasted only 11 minutes, setting up a tense final quarter of the match.
With the scores level, FC Goa continued to press for all three points. Chiki attempted another effort from inside the penalty area in the 79th minute as the hosts sought to complete the turnaround. Chennaiyin also had opportunities to reclaim the lead. Ramon rose to meet a cross from the left but sent his header over the crossbar, missing a chance to punish FC Goa while the goalkeeper was off his line.
The closing stages remained competitive, with both sides attempting to find a decisive goal rather than settling immediately for a draw. However, neither could convert its opportunities, and the score remained 1-1 at the final whistle. FC Goa's four corners compared with Chennaiyin's one also reflected the hosts' attacking intent, particularly during the second half when they pushed hard for an equaliser and subsequently looked for a winner.
The result gives both FC Goa and Chennaiyin FC a point to begin their ISL 2026–27 campaigns. For Chennaiyin, Yadwad's clinical finish and the team's ability to create another opportunity through Ramon offered positives, although they will be disappointed not to have protected their lead. FC Goa can take encouragement from their response after going behind. The efforts from Ramon and Udanta Singh showed their ability to create danger, while Chiki's equaliser ensured that their attacking pressure translated into a result.
The draw also highlighted the importance of taking chances in closely contested league matches. Chennaiyin came close to securing an away victory, but FC Goa's persistence and improved attacking pressure after the break ensured that the points were shared in Fatorda.
Both teams will now look to build on their opening performance as the new ISL season progresses. For FC Goa, the next step will be converting promising attacking spells into more goals, while Chennaiyin will aim to combine their attacking threat with the defensive consistency required to hold on to leads.
