Indian athletics is witnessing one of its greatest sprinting moments, and all eyes will now turn towards the finals at the Federation Cup 2026 in Ranchi.

After a breathtaking semifinal session that saw the men’s 100m national record broken twice within minutes, the stage is now perfectly set for a historic showdown on Day 2 at the Birsa Munda Stadium.

The men’s 100m final, scheduled for 7:10 PM IST, has suddenly become one of the most anticipated sprint races in Indian athletics history. At the centre of the excitement stand Animesh Kujur and Gurindervir Singh. First, Gurindervir electrified the stadium by clocking 10.17s in the semifinals, breaking Animesh Kujur’s previous national record of 10.18s. The Punjab sprinter looked sensational throughout the race and even appeared to ease off slightly towards the finish line, suggesting there could still be more left in the tank. But the celebrations barely lasted a few minutes.

In the very next semifinal, Animesh Kujur responded like a champion, storming to a stunning 10.15s to reclaim the national record and also breach the Commonwealth Games qualification standard of 10.16s. The back-to-back record-breaking performances completely transformed the atmosphere around Indian sprinting.

Suddenly, the Federation Cup final is no longer just a domestic race. It has become a statement about how rapidly Indian sprinting is evolving.

Animesh’s 10.15s also lifted him among Asia’s leading sprinters this season, underlining the growing competitiveness of Indian athletes at the continental level. Even more remarkably, Kujur had openly spoken earlier this year about targeting “10-flat” in the future.

That ambition no longer sounds unrealistic. The final lineup itself promises fireworks. Animesh Kujur enters the race as the fastest qualifier with his national record run of 10.15s and will line up in lane three. Gurindervir Singh, now the former national record holder despite holding the record briefly, will run alongside him in lane four after his 10.17s effort.

The rivalry between the two has suddenly become one of the most exciting storylines in Indian athletics. But the field is far deeper than just two sprinters. Bihar’s Vibhaskar Kumar has emerged as one of the revelations of the competition after clocking a sensational personal best of 10.36s in the heats. That timing not only breached the qualification standard for the Asian U23 Athletics Championships but also made him the fastest athlete across the heats.

Vibhaskar’s rapid rise has been among the biggest talking points of the Federation Cup. Only weeks ago, his personal best stood at 10.57s. Now, he finds himself competing in a final featuring India’s fastest-ever men. Pranav Gurav, Lalu Prasad Bhoi, Manav R, Sam Vasanth and Nuzrat will also look to challenge in what could become one of the fastest finals ever run on Indian soil.

The excitement is not limited to the men’s race alone. The women’s 100m final, scheduled for 7:00 PM IST, also promises an intense battle among several of India’s leading sprinters.

Giridharani Ravikumar has emerged as the favourite after consistently dominating both the heats and semifinals. She clocked 11.45s in the heats before following it up with 11.52s in the semifinals, the fastest times across all rounds.

Her form heading into the final has been extremely impressive. Giridharani will line up in lane three alongside strong competitors including Sneha S.S, Sudeshna Hanmant, Tamanna, Srabani Nanda and experienced sprinter Daneshwari A T. Youngster Nithya Gandhe also remains one to watch after qualifying for the final with 11.71s.

The women’s race carries an additional layer of significance because the Commonwealth Games qualification standard stands at 11.17s exactly equal to India’s national record. While breaching that mark remains difficult, the improving standards in Indian women’s sprinting continue to offer encouragement. What makes this Federation Cup particularly special is the sense that Indian sprinting has entered a completely new era.

For years, the men’s 100m national record barely moved. Between 2005 and 2021, the record improved by only 0.04 seconds. But since 2022, Indian sprinting has undergone a dramatic transformation.

The record has now fallen from 10.26s to 10.15s in just a few seasons. That progress reflects better training systems, improved athletic depth and growing belief among Indian sprinters that international-level timings are achievable. Now, with Animesh Kujur and Gurindervir Singh pushing each other to unprecedented levels, the possibility of another historic performance feels very real.

And when the finalists step onto the track in Ranchi tonight, Indian athletics may once again witness history being rewritten.
